Limitations of Redistribution Requirements That Come from Recognition Policie

    No full text

Razlikovanje nezavisnih kontrolnih i regulatornih tela

    No full text

“We strongly encourage qualified women and minorities to apply”: Ethnicity, language and gender as personal, political and epistemological positions

    No full text
Using auto-ethnography, the presentation/paper will explore the possibilities and challenges offered to a female researcher coming from a post-Yugoslav minority background -- myself. While personal, the account aims at bringing to light some of the wider structural dimensions of the seemingly individual/private decisions, opportunities and difficulties, reframing them as collective/public. My argument concerns the relevance of engaging with not only the researchers’ personal but also their institutional and cultural positionalities. I will construct it through a case study of the experience of conducting research about multilingualism and state-language learning by members of the Hungarian minorities in three fieldwork sites: Vojvodina, Transylvania and Prekmurje with the affiliation to the University of Oslo. My paper will relate to contemporary sociolinguistic literature that is starting to acknowledge that multilingualism is not only a resource but can be a barrier as well, in particular at the labor market – of which the academia is no exception. The other set of literature the paper will use is that on academic precarity with an additional focus of a gendered perspective. The presentation will start by a personal recollection of my interest in the topic as well as the institutional background of undertaking the research in the three locations. The narratives about the personal and the institutional setup will serve not merely as “context” or “background”, but I see them co-constitutive of my study. The meta-research will therefore attempt to show some of the (im)possible positions I have taken in my research. These are scattered around various axes, some of which are shared with interlocutors and others that distance the researcher. These include the presence or the lack of the following: knowledge of the state language, the shared historical legacy of Yugoslavia, the socialist heritage, a linguistic dialect spoken, gender, age, class, education, political ideology, etc. These positions however do not only have consequences for the interpretation of the “research material” and the “results” but are positions negotiated on another level: as a precarious female researcher from the former Yugoslavia in Western academia. The paper will therefore also touch upon dilemmas related to: What are the career strategies available to a post-Yugoslav female postdoc? Being Hungarian, is she (post-)Yugoslav at all? Where does gender play into her roles? What are the personal and academic qualities that are valorized and what are the traits that can hinder her career? What perspectives and what methodologies accessible to her and why she is discouraged from taking others? What issues is she supposed to discuss and what shall she better be silent about when presenting the research? Where is the demarcation line between East and West, knowledge production and reproduction, personal and political? Even though raising questions primarily about post-Yugoslav academic subjectivities, the issues the paper engages with are also related to ethno-national epistemologies and to (im)possibilities of a “safe distance” as a researcher from the former Yugoslavia precariously producing knowledge in a Western (Northern) academic institution.Konferenciju je organizovao Univerzitet u Sent-Galenu, Švajcarsk

    No full text

The Quality of Fitness in the Architecture of the 20th Century: An Oversighted Design Principle from the Beaux-Arts Tradition

    No full text
Architectural design method from the tradition of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris, considered one of the most prestigious educational institutions since its establishment in the 17 century, flourished until the Second World War across the countries aligned with the culture of the West. Though it marked the majority of buildings designed and constructed during the first four decades of the 20th century, pre-Second World War Beaux-Arts architecture remains under-researched within the international historiography. Exploring a lesser known design principle from the Beaux-Arts tradition – the quality of fitness in architecture – this paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the topic. By the 20th century, Beaux-Arts architects – though, indeed, ever aware of the aesthetic potentials of architecture – approached design pragmatically. Beaux-Arts tradition insisted on functional designs, sensitive towards the local context and the use of the cutting-edge building technologies. Exploring an example from New Zealand architectural history, this paper will show that Beaux-Arts methodology was more practical than what has been generally proposed by the historians of architecture

Ius sive Potentia: Pavle i Spinoza

    No full text
This article is a part of a research project entitled Law as Potency, that, broadly put, investigates the relation between law and ontology. I argue, starting from St. Paul, that an ontological perspective can be understood as the possibility of justice, in a sense of a liberation of the human being. Thus, this paper offers an analysis of the concepts of potency and universality. Even though the term ‘universalism’ is not explicitly mentioned, it is present in St. Paul’s thinking and brought onto its practical consequences. In addition, Spinoza’s reading of St. Paul opens up a possibility to challenge this concept to a concept of modern teleology. Therefore, I discuss the consequences of this confrontation in regard to law, politics and economics. This leads to an articulation of another modernity, where, perhaps, the universal appears as the affirmation of difference. Iako termin „univerzalizam“ nije izričito pomenut, on je prisutan u mišljenju Sv. Pavla i doveden do svojih praktičnih posledica. Stoga raspravljam o posledicama ovog sučeljavanja u pogledu zakona, politike i ekonomije. To dovodi do artikulacije druge modernosti, gde se, možda, univerzalno pojavljuje kao afirmacija razlike

    Pojam angažovanja

    No full text
In this paper, we illuminate the basic features of the concept of engagement, which has only become possible in the secular world, with the emergence of the modern individual deprived of any stable, eternal order or hierarchy of values. Still, engagement is not only individual but also collective, as the lack of certainty about the truth affects not only the community and society but also motivates them to follow the same paradigm as the individual – themselves at stake, without knowing where it could possibly lead, but with the intention to produce some tangible and stable socio-cosmic structures that could alleviate man’s uncertainty and thus insecurity. The necessity of engagement stems from the circumstance that man lives in a context saturated with meanings that call him out in advance and influence him. Therefore, engagement means actually acting back to the being-exposed to meanings and structures that have already affected man and his situation. One section of the text deals with an understanding of engagement in the contemporary, “postmodern” era.U ovom radu osvjetljavamo osnovne crte koncepta angažovanja, koji je postao moguć tek u sekularnom svijetu, s pojavom moderne indvidue lišene bilo kakvog stabilnog, vječnog poretka i hijerarhije vrijednosti.

    Udeo smrti: briga prelazi logor

    No full text
The essay thematises the question of care in conditions of total power – not merely extra muros, in the everyday life of the Third Reich, but in its most radical articulation, the concentration camp. Drawing inspiration from Todorov’s work, the essay engages with Levinas, Agamben, Derrida and Nancy, to investigate Heidegger’s determination of Da-sein’s horizon through a solitary confrontation with death. Drawing extensively on primary testimonies, the essay shows that when the enclosure of the camp became the Da of existence, care assumed a radical significance as the link between the death of another and the death of oneself. In the face of an apparatus of total power and its attempt to individuate and isolate death, the sharing of death in the figure of care remained one’s most inalienable act of resistance and the last means to hold on to death as something that could be truly one’s own.
