MetaGarden: Technology and Nature in the Works of Tanja Vujinović
In recent decades we have witnessed technological and scientific progress and breakthroughs at an unprecedented rate. We, as humankind, have become technologically advanced, globally connected, informed, all of which reflect traditional ideas of the steady progress of civilization. But at the same time, we face many challenges brought about by climate change, air pollution, water shortage, extinction of species, and other natural disasters. Through an overview of the concept of the Anthropocene from the perspective of philosophy and critical theory, I will discuss alternative approaches to addressing the ecological crisis. Although the key actors in these endeavors are usually scientists, governments, and multinational corporations, I will examine the ways arts and culture significantly contribute to the projects of crisis mitigation. Finally, I turn to MetaGarden, a series of works created by media artist Tanja Vujinović, which epitomize the visions of a more sustainable future(s)
How media directly impact society: a psychometric analysis of leading Twitter news profiles and their followers in Serbia
We conducted quantitative psychometric analysis on Twitter posts of 20 leading Serbian media in duration of three months. On the other side, we did the same kind of processing for their followers, including more than half million of tweets. The analysis has been done using Twitter API on posts data from 24 October until 30 January of 2019, Serbian LIWC psychometric dictionary and further statistical processing. We discovered that language used by media differs according to their nature and contents they produce. At the same time we found that categories and words related to family, feel, sex, spirituality, negative emotions and work, expressed in posts of media, are predictors for tweets of their followers. This actually means that if media reports consist of these elements, they will reflect in language of their followers. Thus, impact of media on their audiences is clearly registered in the language of Twitter users. Such findings confirm the power of media and indicate how important it is to carefully choose media contents that are consumed, having in mind of various potential hazards, including media addiction. Results align with emotional contagion theory. This research was the first one to indicate various psychometric categories could spread on social media, beyond solely emotions. This research is limited to assessment of media impact in one country. The study indicates it would be important to focus further research on negative news and how they affect multiple societies and groups of people and establish live Media Negativity Index on global level
Should Sex Education Be Taught in Schools?
Sex education addresses issues related to human sexuality, including reproduction,
reproductive health, reproductive rights, romantic relationships, anatomy of repro ductive organs, sexual activity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender roles, con traception, and sexual abstinence. Formal and informal sex education are both im portant and complement each other. However, although necessary, informal sex
education by itself is not enough. Sex education needs to become a formal part of the
school curriculum, as schools should play the key role in educating young people about
this topic.
To examine whether the initiative to include sex education in the school curricu lum is justified, we started from these three questions: What are the goals of educa tion and what is its purpose? Do we think that educational institutions should repro duce a preestablished set of values or should the curriculum enable students to evaluate
social values for themselves? Should primary and secondary education be designed
to allow individuals to choose courses according to their interests, preferences, and
abilities, or should the school curriculum be the same for all? In the context of sex ed ucation, we tried to answer questions about the goals of sex education and whether
or not they are in line with the aspirations of education in general, whether sex edu cation should reproduce generally accepted social values, and whether it should be
the same for all students.
Education should teach us to use our reason when forming beliefs and making de cisions. The main goals of sex education are to provide young people with knowledge
on these topics and help them make independent decisions using that knowledge.
These goals are in line with the general aspirations of education. The answer to the
question of whether sex education should reproduce dominant social values depends
on what we mean by sex education. If we accept the definition offered in this paper,
then the answer to the question is negative. Sex education understood in this broad
sense should strive to change the current value system. To achieve the main goals of
sex education, it needs to be the same and mandatory for all young people
Simulacrum And Critique: Deleuze’s Understanding of plato(nism)
Deleuze’s understanding of criticism, presented in his work „Nietzsche and Philoso phy“, is a systematic method that Deleuze will use many times later. Advocating this
thesis, the paper analyzes the problem of simulacrum, which Deleuze sees in Plato’s
philosophy, showing how Deleuze’s understanding of critique is present in his percep tion of Plato. Although the idea of Deleuze’s critique as a method is in this paper largely
observed and examined through his understanding of Plato and the simulacrum, the
paper also suggests the possibility of a broader understanding of the role of criticism
in Deleuze: can critique be understood as a constant methodological approach used
by Deleuze? Such a position opens a space within which Difference and Repetition can
be read as a great critical project, an Idea, which Deleuze himself partially refers to
Burdijeova teorizacija socijalnog kapitala u analizi jugoistočnoevropskih društava
This article discusses the significance of social capital in Bourdieu-inspired analyses of contemporary South-East European societies. We first recapitulate Bourdieu’s theorization of social capital, emphasizing that it allows different operationalizations expressly because of its rather abstract theoretical character. Following that, we explain what is meant by “South- East European societies” and that their inequality-generating mechanisms are largely based on social closure. In the central part of the article, we comment on some attempts at operationalization of social capital in the SEE region. While we also discuss two cases of eclectically mixing Lin’s operationalization with Bourdieusian concepts, at the center of our attention is the elaboration of Bourdieu’s theorization of social capital put forward by the Serbian sociologist Predrag Cvetičanin. The relevance of his concepts of “social capital of solidarity” and “social capital of informal connections” for the study of class relations in post-socialist societies in South-East Europe highlights the advantages of a consistent application of the Bourdieusian framework in a contemporary (post-Bourdieusian) context.U ovom se članku raspravlja o značaju socijalnog kapitala u burdijeovski inspirisanim anali zama savremenih jugoistočnoevropskih društava. Najpre rekapituliramo Burdijeovu teoriza ciju socijalnog kapitala, naglašavajući da ona dopušta različite operacionalizacije upravo zbog
svog razmerno apstraktnog teorijskog karaktera u njegovom radu.
Relevantnost njegovih koncepata „socijalni kapital solidarnosti“ i „socijalni kapital neformalnih
veza“ za proučavanje klasnih odnosa u postsocijalističkim društvima u jugoistočnoj Evropi
ističe prednosti konzistentne primene burdijeovskog okvira u savremenom (post-burdijeovskom) kontekstu
Diversity and age stereotypes in portrayals of older adults in popular American primetime television series
To examine the prevalence and diversity of older adults on primetime television, and age stereotyping in these portrayals, we analysed the contents of 112 episodes of popular American television series aired between 2004 and 2018. We identified 6.6 per cent of characters as aged 65 and older – a slight improvement to the values reported in previous studies. However, older adult characters are still grossly under-represented, considering the actual proportion of older adults in the general population of the United States of America. Further, the typical older character was young-old, male, Caucasian, middleclass, able-bodied and straight – if his sexuality was referenced. Older women still face double discrimination in media representations. In addition, older adult characters with ethnicities other than Caucasian and African American are virtually invisible in primetime fiction series. Similarly, old-old characters, sexual minorities and persons with disabilities are particularly rare among older adult characters in this type of programming. Finally, portrayals of 51.9 per cent of characters included at least some elements of age stereotypes, most of which were positive. The most commonly applied positive and negative stereotypes were found to be the golden ager and the shrew, respectively. The findings are discussed in the context of the dominant discourse of ageing and the potential implications of how various social groups perceive ageing and older adults

How digital data are used in the domain of health: A short review of current knowledge
In the era of digitalization, digital data is available about every aspect of our daily lives,
including our physical and mental health. Digital data has been applied in the domain of healthcare
for the detection of an outbreak of infectious diseases, clinical decision support, personalized care, and genomics. This paper will serve as a review of the rapidly evolving field of digital health. More specifically, we will discuss (1) big data and physical health, (2) big data and mental health, (3) digital contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally, (4) ethical issues with using digital data for health-related purposes. With this review, we aim to stimulate a public debate on the appropriate usage of digital data in the health sector
The epistemic value of politeness as a virtue
The chapter addresses politeness as a virtue and the underlying emotions which give rise to politeness on an intersubjective level. It explores the dynamic function of moral emotions which specifically contribute to politeness and delves into the issues of self-worth, self-love and a sense of power which all facilitate a stable emotional, dynamic structure behind politeness as a virtue. One of the key tenets of the chapter is that moral emotions play an important cognitive role in allowing us to recognise what is right and what is wrong, what is socially desirable and what is socially proscribed. A further step in the argument in the chapter is that the perception of norms and values is fundamentally aesthetic, and that politeness as an aesthetic value belongs to just such a realm of socialisation which, by using aesthetic discriminations, leads to the adoption of norms and practices which define decency, propriety, even solidarity and loyalty as moral values. Thus our perception of decency and its place as a value in the socialisation process can trace the more general and more comprehensive processes of value-laden cognitions that are recognised by society as formative of that society’s paradigms of good citizenship. The chapter specifically singles out the role of politeness as useful in the process of adopting aesthetic judgements on an emotional value: the process which moves from rationally choosing politeness as an argumentatively defensible strategy in social relationships to emotionally embracing politeness as a specific aesthetic sensibility. This is a process that embodies our socialization and points out the epistemic role of aesthetic sensibility in the formation of personality and solidification of value system
