Recommender Algorithms as a Source of Power in Contemporary Society

    No full text
Both tech companies and AI algorithms exercise immense power in today’s globally interconnected world, which is based on big data and digital footprints of online users. This paper analyses the transfer of power from societies to tech companies and algorithms with the aim of examining whether recommender algorithms can be considered a public good. Deployed methods include content analysis and literature reviews. The study has found that control exercised over public opinion, decisions and moods of online users is unprecedented to such a high degree in human history. The above-mentioned control is based on the impact of both tech companies and algorithms. The limitation of this research is the lack of quantitative analysis. Future research should concentrate on defining recommender algorithms as a public good and analyzing how different media content, including virtual reality, affects citizens’ psychology

Istoriju pišu nepobeđeni, ili još jednom o partizanu

    No full text
The article is an elaboration of the positive epistemology of the victim of war in the works of Walter Benjamin and Carl Schmitt. The discussion involves the Serbian philosopher Petar Bojanić, who in his book “Violence and Messianism” (2018) offers an original version of the deconstruction of the figure of the victor and the vanquished by Benjamin. The article pro poses a consideration of the figure of the partisan as reconciling these incompatible positi ons, subjecting the well-known theory of the partisan by Carl Schmitt to fundamental phi losophical criticism. In the same context, the text offers a principled critique of ethical just war theory and left-liberal critique of unmanned military technology.

    No full text
The Anthropocene refers to the geological era in which man – anthropos – has become a geophysical force transforming the biosphere. This period is marked by a lack of compassion and understanding of our environments – a total detachment from our biospheric reality. If care is everything we do to repair and maintain this world, what does this process entail in the Anthropocene? This paper addresses the importance of taking care seriously. We look at care in the Anthropocene and its interconnections with the notions of vulnerability and compassion from both a philosophical and anthropological perspective.

    Opisi arhitektonskih objekata u antici

    No full text
Knjiga Arhitektonski opisi u antici razmatra kako su u antičkoj grčkoj i rimskoj književnosti i retorici posmatrane, zamišljane, opisivane i tumačene građevine.

Unpacking Public Animosity Toward Professional Journalism: A Qualitative Analysis of the Differences Between Media Distrust and Cynicism

    No full text
Amidst a widely discussed crisis in audience-media relations, this study argues for the importance of a more nuanced understanding of audience animosity toward professional journalism. Based on 20 in-depth interviews with diverse news audiences in Serbia, we explored how media distrust and cynicism can be empirically distinguished. While both perceptions entail negative expectations from journalism, our findings indicate that they diverge with respect to interviewees’ views on journalistic ideals and integrity, differentiation between media actors, and receptivity to journalistic performance. In the interviews, cynicism emerged as the deterministic and process-oriented perception that journalism serves no other purposes than financial profit and audience manipulation. In contrast, distrust was a more nuanced, probing, and outcome-oriented perception that may be open to correction in the presence of counter-evidence. These findings can help media researchers and educators to better diagnose and address negative media perceptions

Socially engaged philosophy is biased but not in a bad way: A reply to van der Vossen

    No full text
van der Vossen argues that political activism (i.e., “being a member of a political party, campaigning during elections” etc.) biases philosophers’ thinking, making them worse at seeking the truth. Consequently, he states that the ideal of a socially engaged philosopher introduced by Plato and Marx should be replaced by an ideal of a philosopher as a disinterested seeker of the truth. For this reason, he holds that universities should resemble ivory towers more than they do now. I understand van der Vossen’s argument as follows: if philosophy aims to produce knowledge that benefits society (as the proponents of the ideal of a socially engaged philosopher assume, and it is warranted to suppose that van der Vossen grants this assumption), philosophy should produce unbiased knowledge. Further, if philosophy aims to produce unbiased knowledge, philosophers should be disinterested in their exploration of the truth, and not politically active (for the reason mentioned); thus, hidden in their ivory towers. Against van der Vossen, I first argue that socially beneficial knowledge does not require disinterestedness and unbiasedness (these are, after all, not human traits) but the ability to distance oneself from one’s biases so one can revise them in face of criticism. Consequently, although I admit that political activism can strengthen one’s biases, I argue that it does not follow that politically active philosophers are more likely to produce biased philosophy than those who are not interested in politics. Finally, I claim that a socially engaged philosopher does not need to be a political activist at all. A socially engaged philosopher is one who produces answers to questions that matter to society. However, to get to know what these questions are, a socially engaged philosopher must climb down the ivory tower and engage with the social context of her research but without the need to engage in political activism
