Ways of intertwining city and literature: iconic urban symbols from the field of literature
The presentation analyzes the relationship between literature and city, focusing on the question of how elements of the literary field contribute to the city identity. Starting from the understanding of the literary field as a space that includes literary works, writers, literary events, and institutions, it is discussed how these different components of the field contribute to the sense of the cities’ specificity and uniqueness. The analysis is inspired by the work of Peter Nas and his associates (Nas, 1993, Nas, 1998, Nas, De Groot, Schut, 2011) and more particularly the concept of “urban symbolism”. The notion of “urban symbolism” helps us understand symbolic and ritual structures which reflect the history of the urban community and shape the identity of a city. Following the typology of “urban symbol bearers'' proposed by Peter Nas and his associates, we identified key identity markers of the city which are related to the literary sphere which are related to the literary sphere, such as monuments dedicated to writers and literary characters, literary
institutions (literary museums and libraries), depictions of cities in literary works, literary events, and other related phenomena. The importance of identification of such identity markers, “urban literary symbols”, lies in providing deeper understanding of interconnection between city identity and literary field, as well as, in considering the possibility of using them as a cultural resource for local development. Urban literary symbols connected with the globally most famous authors and books are promotional icons abundantly used in city branding strategies as a tool to raise tourist attractiveness of the city. However, urban literary symbols connected with authors and literary works that did not gain global recognition are unsustainable means to promote the culture of the city, and therefore have been largely overlooked in urban cultural policies
Neponovljivi SFRJudaizam
Evolution, Communion, and Vaccines: Science and Theology Debates in the Serbian Orthodox Church
During the twentieth century, the relationship between theology and science had been
debated in the Serbian public within three conceptual frameworks: (1) the founding of the
University of Belgrade, (2) Serbian post-Second World War theological apologetics, and (3)
Neo-patristic theology. The twenty-first century, especially in the last couple of years, saw
three different instances in which scientific issues were a matter of theological debates that
gained the attention of the wider public. These debates were on (1) the theory of evolution
and creationism, (2) the means of distributing Holy Communion in the time of the COVID-19
pandemic, and (3) vaccines against the Coronavirus. This paper presents an overview of
the three instances of theology and science debates in the Serbian Orthodox Church in the
twenty-first century, as well as some key factors whose interplay shaped these debates to a
great extent
SHAALA-22: Construction, psychometric characteristics and validation of questionnaire for academic self-handicapping
Academic self-handicaping (ASH) referes to usage of self-handicapping strategies in order to
preserve self-esteem by externalizing the causes that could lead to potential failure in
academic context. The aim of this study was to validate the SHAALA-22 which intends to
measure ASH. The items were generated to reflect the most frequently disscussed ASH
strategies found in the literature. Convergent validity was tested with instruments HEXACO60 (specifically, with Conscientiousness), Self-Liking and Self-Competence Scale (SLCS, 16
items) and Self-Handicap Assessment Questionnare (SH, 34 items) which assesses four types
of self-handicapping (External handicaps in interpersonal relationships (EIR), Internal
handicaps in interpersonal relationships (IIR), Internal handicaps in achievement situations
(IAS), External handicaps in achievement situations (EAS)). Divergent validity was tested by
correlation analysis with the traits of Honesty, Emotionality, Agreeableness, Extraversion,
and Openness. Regarding diagnostic validity, we expected no differences between males and
females, but expected that pupils would have higher scores than students on SHAALA-22.
Subjects were recruited using the snowball method. Total of 249 participants (69.9% female),
aged 15-51 years (M = 19.35, SD = 3.31), completed the questionnaires. The method
conducted for exploratory factor analysis was Principal components analysis by the means of
which we identified one component that accounts for 27.85% of total variance. Factor
analysis indicated that it's justified to use the total score on the instrument (α = .871, KMO =
.933, H2 = .626). The following significant correlations were obtained between the summary
score of SHAALA-22 and the subscales of the used instruments: with Conscientiousness (r =
-.532, p < .01), with Honesty (r = -.234, p < .01), with Extraversion (r = -.241, p < .01), with
Agreeableness (r = -.141, p < .05), with Self-Liking (r = -.342, p < .01), with SelfCompetence (r = -.432, p < .01), with EIR (r = .267, p < .01), with IIR (r = .273, p < .01),
with IAS (r = .64, p < .01), with EAS (r = .409, p < .01). No significant differences in ASH were observed between males and females, nor between students and pupils. The obtained
results indicate good psychometric characteristics of the test and confirm its convergent and
discriminant validity, opening new theoretical and practical questions related to this
construct
Izneverena očekivanja: mogu li deliberativne inovacije u hibridnim režimima imati demokratske efekte?
Participation in deliberation in stable democracies produces effects which are beneficial for democracy, while the results of deliberative innovations in non-democracies are more ambiguous. This article contributes to the debate about the effects of participatory democratic innovations on attitudes, related to democratic commitments, political capacities and political participation, in the increasingly ubiquitous hybrid regimes. We present the evidence collected from the participants before and after deliberative mini publics (DMPs), held in Serbia in 2020. Serbia is an exemplary case of a recent wave of autocratization, which had led to it becoming a hybrid regime, and it had no track record of deliberative innovations. When conducting the mini publics, we introduced an innovation in the standard design, by including active citizens – representatives of local initiatives or social movements particularly interested in the issue of DMPs. We could not find evidence that the democratic innovation affected attitudes of participants regarding democratic commitments, political capacities and political participation. However, we did find that participants of the DMPs became less satisfied with the functioning of the democracy on the local level. We argue that the anti-democratic wider context of hybrid regimes can produce adverse effects when introducing participatory democratic innovations, at least when it comes to this specific dimension of political participation. We conclude with the suggestions for further research, and a call for consideration of the wider political context when designing democratic interventions in hybrid regimes.U stabilnim demokratijama učešće u deliberaciji proizvodi efekte koji pogoduju demokratiji, dok su rezultati deliberativnih inovacija u nedemokratijama neodređeniji. U radu predstavljamo rezultate ispitivanja učesnika, pre i posle njihovog učešća u deliberativnim mini javnostima (DMJ), održanih u Srbiji 2020. godine. Srbija predstavlja uzorni slučaj poslednjeg talasa autokratizacije, putem kog je postala hibridni režim, i pored toga nema razvijenu praksu deliberativnih inovacija.
Između istorije i sistema: pojam kulture Hajnriha Rikerta
The paper reconstructs the concept of culture that emerges from Heinrich Rickert’s neo-Kantianism, uncovering its major historical-problematic, methodological, and philosophical implications. The central theme of the first section is the idea that modern culture is uniquely characterized by “fragmentation”. It also unpacks the programme of Rickert’s philosophy of culture, which pursues the task of reconstructing the lost unity of culture. The second section explains the methodological implications of the problematic relationship between value and reality established in cultural goods and evaluations. Finally, the third section reconstructs the Rickertian system of values, with its peculiar effort to reconcile historicity and value absoluteness. The last part develops a critical discussion of the Rickertian project
Kultura i sloboda u transcendentalnom i spekulativnom idealizmu
The founding fathers of modern philosophy of culture, the neo-Kantians, and especially the Southwest school, brought the concept of culture into play as a counter concept to that of nature. Taking Heinrich Rickert’s conception of culture as a starting point, the article shows how culture is conceived of as a self-formation of the (concrete) subject (agent). It leads to transcendental idealism of freedom, typical of a Kantian type of transcendental philosophy. However, in this self and world formation of the subject it is presupposed that nature is to any extent formable by values and thus by freedom. This presupposition cannot be accounted for properly within transcendental idealism. Hegel, by contrast, conceives of culture as a manifestation of the idea, leading to speculative idealism of freedom. The origin of culture, i.e., its original determinacy, should not be conceived of in terms of an opposition to nature, and consequently in the fashion of a subject (agent) of thought and action that forms itself by forming its world, culture. Rather, it should be conceived of in terms of a manifestation of the idea as the truly transcendental subject qua absolute ground of validity and thus the ground of being too. Nature and culture are both primarily determined by their ideal character and the relationships emerging therefrom.
Politika i teorija – „tri oblika politizacije metoda”, neoliberalizam i zaokret ka proučavanju subjektivnosti u radu Mišela Fukoa*
rada
Roman Stoics Seneca and Epictetus on Epicurean Hedonism and the Social Roles of Philosophers
Epicureans and Roman Stoics interpreted pleasure (ἡδονή) differently from each
other: for the Epicureans, pleasure was the ultimate good, while most Stoics perceived
pleasure as something indifferent. This difference in understanding of pleasure is the
crucial point of a disagreement between these two Hellenistic schools of philosophy,
in particular if we consider their ethics. This paper examines this difference and highli ghts the significant similarities between the Roman Stoic and the Epicurean positions.
Further, it briefly explores the Epicurean and the Roman Stoic understanding of social
relations and philosophers’ role in politics and society
