Neoliberalization elementary and high school education in Serbia from 2012 to 2022
The paper demonstrates and analyses the process of neoliberalising elementary and high school education in Serbia, focused on the period from 2012 and the beginning of Serbian Progressive Party government to today. Before the empirical analysis itself, a theoretical contribution to the debate surrounding the elusiveness of the concept of neoliberalism is given. The paper recommends that the different conceptualizations of this term should be described as aspects of a broader process of class rule through disempowerment. Following Harvey’s approach, this meta-process is defined as neoliberalization. Harvey’s elements of neoliberalization (privatization and commodification; financialization; the management and manipulation of crises; state redistribution) are thus expanded by three further elements: the neoliberal intellectual project, ideology and the cultural regime. In based on this theoretical framework neoliberal changes in education and relationships between them are analyzed. Ways in which these changes contribute towards the restoration of class power is shown
Ja sam onaj koji nisam: prilog aporiji individualizma "Brianova života"
U ovom članku se moderne dileme razumevanja pojedinca izlažu kroz jednu scenu filma "Brianov život" (Life of Brian, Terry Jones, 1979). Brianov govor okupljenim sledbenicima i reakcije na njega, na tipičan i duhovit način reprezentuju konceptualne nevolje kako prosvetiteljske "ideologije individualizma" koja pojedinca suprotstavlja i pretpostavlja kolektivu tako i njenog nejednoznačnag nastavka u romantičarskom favorizovanju "individualnosti". Posebna pažnja se pritom posvećuje dinamičnoj putanji kojom je istovremeno i forsirana i proširivana posebnost pojedinačne ličnosti, sve do njenog utapanja u nadlične entitete. U
Multilingualism in language mimicry: The Danube Swabian language communities in Vojvodina (Serbia)
Based on contemporary fieldwork in Vojvodina, the Autonomous Province in the north of Serbia, the article analyses the sociolinguistic situation of the Danube Swabians in the period immediately after World War II, which was characterized by the ban on German language, stigmatization and mimicry in public sphere. In the first part, we provide a historical overview of the Danube Swabian speech communities from the Habsburg Monarchy to the present-day Serbia. Then, by using the theoretical framework of cultural trauma, we contextualize the interlocutors’ discourse on language practices after World War II. In the analytical part, the interlocutors’ utterances are approached as oral accounts of historical events, on the basis of which we reconstruct the sociolinguistic situation of the Danube Swabians. The article shows, on the one hand, that the practices of language mimicry and language shift were widespread, and, on the other hand, it sheds light on the role that multilingualism played in the language mimicry of the Danube Swabian speech communities. It is argued that the Danube Swabian speech communities, when threatened, switched from Swabian or standard German to languages of their social environment without major communicative problems due to their developed multilingualism.Thematische Ausgabe "Mehrsprachigkeit in deutschsprachigen Kontexten
Redefining the Common Causes of Social Struggles: An Examination of the Antinomies of Value, Labor and Subsumption
In the global contemporary political context, diverse social struggles are being alienated from each other to the point that the illusion of capitalism as the only possible socio-economic system is blurring all horizons of social change. In this article, we will aim to redefine the common causes of social struggles, by demonstrating their intersectionality and interdependence. In order to do so, we will engage with a number of concepts from Marx’s philosophy. In the introduction, we will examine the notion of value, claiming that Marx’s value theory is not simply a labor theory of value, but that it rather reflects the parallax structure of production and circulation, crystallized in the ultimate value-form of money. Having obtained these preliminary insights, we will go back to the phenomenon of labor in capitalism, to reinterpret, in the first section of the article, the Marxian distinction between productive and unproductive labor. From this will follow the first concrete examples of the intersectionality of social struggles against the abstraction of capital: namely, showing that gender and racial struggles have certain common causes, rooted in the Gramscian hegemony. In the second section, we will examine the distinction that Marx establishes between the formal and the real subsumption. The latter, we will claim, is decisive for understanding how capital structures the quasi-totality of our social relations. Following an interpretation of Maren Ade’s film Toni Erdmann, we will propose some possible means of intersectional struggle against real subsumption, that will find their theoretical backing in the concept of subversive universals. The concluding remarks will address the nuclear logic of the distribution and accumulation of capital, a symptom that survives throughout history preserved and driven by the omnipresence of ideology, and stress again implicitly the importance of common struggle in the unfreezing of emergence of a new revolutionary subject
Microlearning: Transforming Education with Bite-Sized Learning on the Go—Insights and Applications
This research delves into microlearning, emphasizing its potential as a transformative tool in the digital age. It extends the theoretical foundations of microlearning, investigates evolving trends, provides practical examples, and discusses the implications associated with education. This is not only to contribute to the growing momentum of microlearning research but also to pave the way for future advancements. The study focuses on Scopus-indexed publications using a systematic review aligned with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and combined with bibliometric analysis. According to the analysis, there has been a noticeable increase in publications related to microlearning since 2015, highlighting a growing interest and contributions from scholars worldwide. The findings corroborate that microlearning is not just about providing learning material in small, easily digestible portions. Crucially, microlearning goes beyond the delivery of bite-sized content. Its flourishing research trajectory underscores its significance, especially for Generation Z and succeeding digitally native generations who are accustomed to smartphones, the Internet, and digital information. Hopefully, these findings offer valuable insights and serve as a reference for the education, government, business, and academic sectors to promote, design, and implement microlearning
European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages as an instrument of European language policy
In this paper, I analyse the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages as one of the most important European instruments of language policy and planning. In the first part, the
basic principles of European language policy and ideology are outlined. Then the programme, structure, and work procedures of the Charter are presented. Finally, the paper discusses how
the Charter intersects with the political field of European countries and what its role is in minority language revitalisation and emancipation
