    Tumor associated macrophages in the molecular pathogenesis of ovarian cancer

    The tumor microenvironment is a critical factor that enhances cancer progression, drug resistance, and failure of therapeutic approaches. Several cellular and non-cellular factors are involved in cancer promotion. Among the several cell populations in the tumor microenvironment, macrophages, as one of the most abundant innate immune cells within the tumor milieu, have attracted extensive attention among several researchers because of their critical role in innate pathophysiology of multiple disorders, as well as ovarian cancer. High plasticity and consequent high ability to adapt to environmental alternations by adjusting their cellular metabolism and immunological phenotype is the notable characteristic of macrophages. Therefore, the critical function of tumor-associated macrophages in ovarian cancer is highlighted in the growing body of recent studies. In this article, we will comprehensively focus on significant impacts of the macrophages on ovarian cancer progression, by discussing the role of macrophages as one of the fundamental immune cells present in tumor milieu, in metabolic reprogramming of transformed cells, and involvement of these cells in the ovarian cancer initiation, progression, invasion, and angiogenesis.     Antimicrobial peptides-loaded smart chitosan hydrogel: Release behavior and antibacterial potential against antibiotic resistant clinical isolates

    In this study, we synthesized thermo-responsive chitosan (TCTS) hydrogels, and loaded with different concentrations of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) (0, 4, 8 and 16 μg·ml−1) to fabricate an antibacterial wound dressing against resistant clinical isolates. Physico-chemical properties, release behavior, cytobiocompatibility and antibacterial activity of the AMP-TCTS hydrogels against standard strain and resistant Acinetobacter baumannii were fully determined in vitro. The TCTS-40% β-glycerolphosphate hydrogels showed a gelation time of 15 min at 37 °C. 80% weight loss at day 35 with no changes in pH value was observed. AMP-TCTS hydrogels showed a burst release of AMP (around 40%) at day 1, and a controlled release up to day 7. A dramatic water uptake was observed at first 4 h, and then continued for 10 h in a steady manner. All the AMP-TCTS hydrogels showed excellent cytobiocompatibility for human fibroblasts. The TCTS showed no antibacterial activity against both standard strain and clinical isolates. All the AMP-TCTS hydrogels had strong antibacterial activity against standard strains, but only 16 μg·ml−1 showed antibacterial behavior against resistant A. baumannii. Our results strongly suggest the 16 μg·ml−1 AMP-TCTS hydrogel as an excellent antibacterial wound dressing against resistant A. baumannii, and now promises to proceed with pre-clinical investigations

    The optimum selection of the appropriate radiolabelled probe for the right target and the right patient is the foundation of theranostics in personalised medicine. In nuclear medicine, this process is realised through the appropriate choice of radiopharmaceuticals based on molecular biomarkers regarding molecular imaging. Ther-anostics is developing a strategy that can be used to implement accepted tools for individual molecular targeting, including diagnostics, and advances in genomic molecular knowledge, which has led to identifying theranostics biomaterials that have the potency to diagnose and treat malignancies. Today, numerous studies have reported on the discovery and execution of these radiotracers in personalised medicine. In this review, we presented our point of view of the most important theranostics agents that can be used to treat several types of malignancies. Molecular targeted radionuclide treatment methods based on theranostics are excellent paradigms of the relationship between molecular imaging and therapy that has been used to provide individualised or personalised patient care.     Abundance, composition, and potential intake of microplastics in canned fish

    The existence of microplastics (MPs) in canned fish (tuna and mackerel) samples was investigated and their composition, possible sources and potential intake were assessed. Light and fluorescence microscopy were used for the quantification of potential MPs. Furthermore, micro-Raman microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray were used to identify the polymer types and composition of MPs. The results showed that 80% of samples had at least one plastic particle and fibers were the most abundant shapes of MPs. Moreover, polyethylene terephthalate (32.8%) was the most common polymer type in canned fish samples. The fish, food additives, and contact materials during the cleaning and canning process are possible sources of MPs. Human intake estimation of MPs showed the possibility of plastics absorption by humans who consume canned fish several times/week.     Investigating the effect of the aroma inhalation of orange and lavender essential oils in comparison with placebo on the level of anxiety in clients in a dental clinic in Shiraz: A double-blind controlled randomized clinical trial

    Background: Attending a dentist and placing on the unit can cause anxiety. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of the aroma inhalation of orange and lavender essential oils in comparison with placebo on the level of anxiety in clients in a dental clinic in Shiraz. Methods: This randomized double-blind clinical trial was performed on 120 patients referred to a Dental Clinic. The patients were divided into three groups of anxiety treatments with scent of lavender, orange and sesame (as control). The Spielberger questionnaire was used to measure the anxiety of the patients before and after the study. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 22. The level of significance was considered as 5%. Results: Overall, there is no difference in the state scores of anxiety before and after the interventions. In the sesame group (ttest (-0.068) and the significant level (0.501), in the orange group (t (0.465) and significant level (0.645), in the lavender group (t (0.321) and significant level (0.750). However, a statistically significant difference was observed between the levels of state and trait anxiety after the interventions in all three groups. Conclusion: Although, based on the present study, the use of orange and lavender extracts had partially reduced the levels of state and trait of anxiety in dental clients, more clinical studies are recommende

    Acute renal failure: A rare initial presentation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Acute lymphoblastic leukemia has several presentations associated with bone marrow and extramedullary involvement. The unusual presentation may be due to the infiltration of leukemic cells in any organ. An 11-year-old girl presented with fever and vomiting, since one day before admission after starfish biting during swimming. Her vital signs were: blood pressure 150/100 mmHg, pulse 98 beats per minute, respiration 18 breathes per minute, and temperature 37.2 °C (99 F). Laboratory work-up showed blood urea nitrogen 38 mg/dl and creatinine 2.8 mg/dl. In peripheral blood smear, few atypical cells, mild anemia (Hb: 9.2 g/dl), and mild thrombocytopenia (Platelet: 109,000/µL) were detected. Bone marrow aspiration and immunophenotyping were in favor of acute precursor B cell type lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient had a favorable response to treatment after initiating high-risk chemotherapy. Therefore, acute renal failure can be a rare initial presentation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and azotemia will improve with an early chemotherapy treatment

    Effect of barberry (Berberis vulgaris) consumption on blood pressure, plasma lipids, and inflammation in patients with hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial

    Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Hypertension is an important and prevalent cardiovascular risk factor. The present study will be conducted to investigate the effect of barberry as a cardio-protective fruit on the blood pressure in patients with hypertension and other CVD risk factors. Furthermore, plasma concentrations of lipids and inflammatory biomarkers will be evaluated. Methods/design: This is an 8-week, prospective, single-blinded, parallel assigned, randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) in which eligible men and women with hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors will be randomized to either placebo powder (PP; containing 9 g maltodextrin, 1 g citric acid, 1 g milled sucrose and edible red color (n = 37)) or barberry powder (BP; containing 10 g milled dried barberry and 1 g of milled sucrose (n = 37)) groups. At baseline and after 8 weeks of intervention, plasma lipids and inflammatory markers, 24-h urinary nitrite/nitrate and sodium excretion, and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) will be measured. Anthropometric measures and dietary assessment will be performed as well. Data analysis will be done using SPSS version-21 software. Discussion: The interest in natural and functional food products has increased globally. This RCT will add to the growing literature for the potential antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, and anti-inflammatory effects of barberry in humans.     Validating the suinn-lew Asian self-identity acculturation scale among middle Eastern Migrants: Linear versus orthogonal approaches

    The current study aimed at validating the 26-item Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation scale (SL-ASIA) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in first-generation young adult Middle Eastern (ME) migrants, and also exploring the agreement between the outcomes of linear and orthogonal approaches of acculturation using SL-ASIA. The CFA and convergent and discriminant validity measures were employed to validate the original linear SL-ASIA and the subsequently designed orthogonal SL-ASIA for first-generation young adult ME migrants in Australia (n = 382). Cohen’s Kappa coefficient was used to measure the agreement between classifica-tions obtained by the linear and orthogonal methods of measuring acculturation. The CFAs of the initial six-factor 21-item linear scale and the two-factor five-item orthogonal scale indicated poor fits. However, after model specification and validation, satisfac-tory fit and validity indices were achieved for the modified scales. The validated linear SL-ASIA comprised five factors and 15 items, and the validated orthogonal SL-ASIA comprised two factors and four items. The Kappa coefficient showed a high level of consistency between the linear and orthogonal models of acculturation, confirming that the use of either scale can lead to similar research out-comes. The study also supports the use of the validated linear and/or orthogonal scales to measure acculturation. This finding responds to the existing gap in the literature that until now, no acculturation scale is validated for ME migrants, and also no study is conducted to validate the orthogonal SL-ASIA

    Load characteristics and inhalation risk assessment of benzene series (BTEX) pollutant in indoor air of Ghalyan and/ or cigarette cafes compared to smoking-free cafes

    To determine the concentration of benzene series (BTEX) compounds, 33 samples were collected from indoor air of Ghalyan cafés (GHC), cigarette cafés (CC) and smoking-free cafés (SFC) in Bushehr city, Iran, and analyzed using gas-chromatography - flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results of this study indicated that the mean±SD values of ΣBTEX in GHC, CC and SFC cafés were 19.46 ± 6.07, 11.34 ± 5.21 and 2.26 ± 0.76 mg/m3, respectively. The mean concentration of BTEX in the cafés with fruit-flavored tobacco was significantly higher than those in traditional cafés (p < 0.05). According to path analysis, the number of active waterpipe heads had the maximum impact on the production of pollutants inside the cafés. The results also indicated that the risk of exposure to BTEX in smoking cafés in Bushehr was very high; it can develop serious carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks

    In this paper, we propose a measure of weighted cumulative residual inaccuracy between survival function of the first-order statistic and parent survival function F. We also consider weighted cumulative inaccuracy measure between distribution of the last-order statistic and parent distribution F. For these concepts, we obtain some reliability properties and characterization results such as relationships with other functions, bounds, stochastic ordering and effect of linear transformation.
