Background: The queston of whether low levels of non-ionizing radiatons such as the radiofrequency electromagnetc fields (RF-EMF) can induce the same positve immune responses remains unanswered. This study aimed to investgate the effects of non-ionizing RF-EMF on some parameters of the immune system in an animal model following infecton with Salmonella Typhimurium and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Materials and Methods: Male BALB/c mice were exposed to RF-EMFs generated by a common GSM mobile phone for 3 days. Animals were infected with K. pneumonia or S. Typhimurium on the 4thday. On the7thday after injecton, blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture. The specific antbodies against bacteria were determined by agglutnaton method and serum levels of the cytokines were measured using the ELISA method. Moreover, the leukocytes count was measured using a cell counter. Results: The levels of specific antbodies against bacteria were higher in non-irradiated mice compared to irradiated mice. There were no significant differences between the irradiated and non-irradiated mice regarding the total blood leukocyte count. The mean serum levels of IFN-γ and IL-17 after infecton with K. pneumoniae were significantly higher in the irradiated mice (p<0.001). Conclusions: Low levels of RF-EMF can stmulate the immune responses in the mice pre-exposed to RF-EMF. This study provides further evidence supportng that exposure to certain levels of RF-EMF can stmulate the immune system. These adaptve responses may be applied to cope with the increased susceptbility of the astronauts to infectons during a deep space mission

The present study evaluated the performance of an integrated two-phase fixed-film baffled bioreactor for wastewater treatment with regard to its energy consumption and production. The total potential of the bioenergy recovery of the bioreactor was evaluated not only from the anaerobic wastewater treatment but also from the produced bio-wasted sludge of both phases. Statistical correlations between bio-methane production and kinetic coefficients were uncovered. Methane yields between 0.15 and 0.30 L CH4.g sCODremoved−1 were obtained during anaerobic wastewater treatment. The maximum energy recoveries from the digestion of bio-wasted sludge (sloughed biofilm) equaled 0.28 and 0.3 L CH4. g TS−1 for aerobic and anaerobic units, respectively. The Grau model was appropriate for predicting the performance of the bioreactor and the potential of bio-methane production. It was demonstrated that substrate utilization rate (Rsu) and Grau coefficient (KG) can be applied to predict the rate of methane production. Regarding the volume of treated wastewater, the energy production was in the range of 2.8–12 kWh.m−3. Moreover, the overall energy consumption of wastewater treatment was in the range of 0.32–0.79 kWh/kg sCODremoved, while the total energy production was 3.7–5.1 kWh/kg sCODremoved. Therefore, the designed bioreactor was energy positive with net energy production of 3.39–4.5 kWh/kg sCODremoved−1. The total energy requirement for both wastewater treatment and bio-wasted sludge digestion was 7–15.5% of the total energy production, and, therefore, the bioreactor is a sustainable energy process. The contribution of anaerobic wastewater treatment and anaerobic digestion of bio-wasted sludge of aerobic and anaerobic units for energy recovery as bio-methane was 53, 26, and 21%, respectively. As the bioreactor achieved more than 95% of sCOD removal and have a high bioenergy production, and since kinetic coefficients demonstrated the considerably high performance of the bioreactor, it can be of interest as an appropriate treatment process

Landfill leachate, as a complex medium with a high concentration of organic and mineral materials, is a serious problem for the environment. In the current study, the saline landfill leachate of Bushehr coastal city (Iran) was treated using ultraviolet/ultrasonic waves/peroxymonosulfate system. The initial TOC and TDS of the studied leachate was 915 mg/L and 7390 mg/L, respectively. The system had the maximum efficiency at conditions of pH 3, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) of 4 mM, and reaction time of 150 min. Based on the findings, the initial ratio of BOD5/COD (0.66) was reduced to 0.38 using the developed system. After treatment of the landfill leachate at the optimal condition, the values of COD, BOD5, and UV254 were reached to 983 mg/L, 348 mg/L, and 10.16 cm−1, respectively. The concentration of all studied elements (except Pb, As, and Ca) increased after purification. According to the GC-mass spectrometry, the molecular weight and concentration of organic matter in raw leachate were higher than that of the treated one. The studied system had an energy consumption value of 86 kW·h/m3 for the treatment of landfill leachate. The results confirm the effectiveness of the ultraviolet/ultrasonic waves/PMS system for the treatment of high saline landfill leachate

Background and Objectives: Cholixin (cholix toxin) is a novel exotoxin in Vibrio cholerae identified as an elongation factor II specific ADP-ribosyltransferase which inhibits protein synthesis in the eukaryotic cell. Previous researches have suggested that cholixin probably is an important virulence factor in non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae (NAG) serotypes that could be related to extra-intestinal rather than intestinal infections. This study was aimed to investigate the frequency and genetic diversity of colixin gene (chxA) in clinical V. cholerae NAG isolates. Materials and Methods: The presence of chxA gene in 44 clinical V. cholerae NAG isolates were screened using PCR through specific primers designed for the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of chxA gene. The five PCR products of chxA gene were sequenced. Results: This study showed that chxA gene presented in 19 V. cholerae NAG isolates. The sequences analysis of 5 out of 19 the partial chxA genes amplicon showed that 4 of them belonged to chxA I and the other one belonged to chxA II subtypes. Two distinct clusters were revealed for these isolates by phylogenic analysis, too. Conclusion: The chxA gene contained high frequency among V. cholerae NAG isolates in Bushehr, Iran. The polymorphism study on RBD of cholixin gene is suggested as an appropriate method for phylogenic characterization of the various chxA gene subtypes

The immunosuppressive nature of the tumor microenvironment is a critical problem that should be considered before the design of immunotherapies. Interleukin (IL)-6 and its related downstream molecules such as signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)3 play an important role in the cancer progression, which can be considered as potential therapeutic targets. In the present study, we generated the active-targeted hyaluronate (HA) recoated N, N, N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) nanoparticles (NPs) to deliver IL-6- and STAT3-specific small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to the CD44-expressing cancer cells. We utilized the interaction between HA and CD44 to increase the specificity and efficacy of cellular uptake in NPs. The results showed that the synthesized NPs had efficient physicochemical characteristics, high transfection efficiency, low toxicity, and controlled siRNA release. siRNA-loaded NPs significantly inhibited the IL-6/STAT3 expression, which was associated with blockade of proliferation, colony formation, migration, and angiogenesis in cancer cells. These findings imply the potential of HA-TMC NPs as potent vectors in gene therapy and their application for the silencing of IL-6 and STAT3, as a novel anti-cancer combination therapeutic strategy, for the first time

Background: Cognitive impairment is a common complication of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of donepezil and memantine on improving the cognitive function of patients with TLE. Materials and Methods: In a clinical trial study, 70 patients with TLE were divided into two groups of 35 each: 10 mg doses of donepezil (first group) and memantine (second group) were applied for 16 weeks. The level of cognitive function of patients in both groups before and after treatment was determined using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test. Results: The mean score of MoCA before and after intervention was 23.55 ± 3.67 and 26.09 ± 2.5, respectively, in the group treated with memantine, and the mean score of intervention was significantly improved (P < 0.001). In the group treated with donepezil, the score before and after the operation was 23.87 ± 3.18 and 24.35 ± 2.17, respectively, and no significant difference was observed in this group (P = 0.38). Conclusion: Hence, memantine was better than donepezil in the improvement of cognitive impairment in patients with TLE

In this study, for the first time, a novel magnetically recyclable MIL-101(Cr)/CoFe2O4nanocomposite was preparedviaa facile solvothermal method. The morphology, structural, magnetic and optical properties of the nanocomposite were characterizedviafield emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-visible) and BET surface area analysis. Furthermore, the sonocatalytic activity of the MIL-101(Cr)-based magnetic nanocomposite was explored for the degradation of organic dye pollutants such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) under ultrasound irradiation in the presence of H2O2. Under optimized conditions, the degradation efficiency reached 96% for RhB and 88% for MO. The sonocatalytic activity of MIL-101(Cr)/CoFe2O4was almost 12 and 4 times higher than that of the raw MIL-101(Cr) and pure CoFe2O4, respectively. The improved sonocatalytic performance of the as-prepared binary nanocomposite can be attributed to the relatively high specific surface area of MIL-101(Cr) and magnetic property of CoFe2O4, as well as the fast generation and separation of charge carriers (electrons and holes) in MIL-101(Cr) and CoFe2O4. In addition, the trapping tests demonstrated that ·OH radicals are the main active species in the dye degradation process. Moreover, the most influencing factors on the sonocatalytic activity such as the H2O2amount, initial dye concentration and catalyst dosage were investigated. Finally, the nanocomposite was magnetically separated and reused without any observable change in its structure and performance even after four consecutive runs

The development of suitable serological tests for the diagnosis of CE is still necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ELISA in the diagnosis of human cystic echinococcosis (CE), using parasite protoscolices antigens. Liver hydatid cysts were isolated from sheep infected with hydatid cysts and the protoscolices were isolated from the hydatid cyst fluid. Protoscolices crude antigen was prepared by mechanical disruption, plus freeze-thawing and sonication methods. Thirty sera samples of confirmed hydatid cyst patients, 30 samples of healthy individuals, and 30 samples of people with other infections were collected and the samples were evaluated in an ELISA system, using the crude protoscolices antigen. The sera samples were also simultaneously evaluated by antigen B-ELISA. The estimated value of sensitivity and specificity for the ELISA, using the crude protoscolices antigens, was 93.3% (95% CI: 76.4–98.8%) and 90% (95% CI: 78.8–95.8%), respectively. These values were 86.6 (95% CI: 68.3–95.6) and 91 (95% CI: 80.81–96.9) for the antigen-B based ELISA. Antigens prepared from protoscolices of hydatid cyst are suitable candidates for the serologic diagnosis of human CE. Further studies are needed to identify a single specific antigen among the protoscolices antigens to improve the diagnostic performance of these antigens

Age-sex specific and cause-specific health risk and burden of disease induced by exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) from drinking water: An assessment in four urban communities of Bushehr Province, Iran, 2017

    No full text
Health risk and burden of disease induced by exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs, four compounds) and haloacetic acids (HAAs, 5 compounds) from drinking water through ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation routes were assessed based on one-year water quality monitoring in four urban communities (Bandar Deylam, Borazjan, Bushehr, and Choghadak) of Bushehr Province, Iran. The total average concentrations of THMs and HAAs at all the communities level were determined to be 92.9 ± 43.7 and 70.6 ± 26.5 μg/L, respectively. The dominant components of the THMs and HAAs were determined to be tribromomethane (TBM, 41.6%) and monobromoacetic acid (MBAA, 60.8%), respectively. The average contributions of ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation routes in exposure to the chlorination by-products (CBPs) were respectively 65.0, 15.4, and 19.6%. The total average non-carcinogenic risk as the hazard index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of the CBPs at all the communities level were found to be 4.03 × 10−1 and 3.16 × 10−4, respectively. The total attributable deaths, death rate (per 100,000 people), age-weighted disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-weighted DALY rate for all ages both sexes combined at all the communities level were estimated to be 1.0 (uncertainty interval: UI 95% 0.3 to 2.8), 0.27 (0.08–0.75), 30.8 (11.3–100.1), and 8.1 (3.0–26.4), respectively. The average contribution of mortality (years of life lost due to premature mortality: YLLs) in the attributable burden of disease was 94.7% (94.4–95.6). Although in most of cases the average levels of the CBPs were in the permissible range of Iranian standards for drinking water quality, the average values of ILCRs as well as attributable burden of disease were not acceptable (the ILCRs were higher than the boundary limit of 10−5); therefore, implementation of interventions for reducing exposure to CBPs through drinking water especially in Kowsar Dam Water Treatment Plant is strictly recommended
