Political recruitment within the Party can be less transparent. The recruitment process sometimes does not pay attention to the quality of the candidates. This study aims to analyze political recruitment related to the quality of candidates in the 2017 Regional Elections in Tasikmalaya City. The theory used in this study is the candidate quality theory (Jacobson & Kernell, 2006). This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological study approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, document studies, and literature studies. The informants in this study are PAN elites and cadres in TasikmalayaCity, DPW/DPP PAN cadres, and political observers in Tasikmalaya City. The study results explain that PAN deputy mayor candidates have low candidate quality. The findings in this study explain that PAN recruits candidates for mayor and deputy mayor of Tasikmalaya differently. The candidate for mayor of Tasikmalaya from PAN is recruited based on the quality of suitable candidates, while the candidate for deputy mayor is recruited due to financial strength. The difference was made because the candidate's considerable financial strength affected the party leadership. This resulted in the split support of party cadres in the regional elections. Seeing such problems, a transparent and merit-based recruitment process is needed. This research further strengthens the idea that the political recruitment process dramatically affects the internal dynamics of political parties. &nbsp

The Dual Effect of Board Gender and Female Director Independence on Firm Performance in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Corporate governance plays an increasingly important role in shaping firm performance, particularly in emerging markets such as Malaysia. This study examines the impact of corporate governance factors, specifically board gender diversity and board independence, on firm performance among the top 100 companies listed on Bursa Malaysia. Grounded in Agency Theory, this research explores how diverse board structures influence decision-making and firm outcomes. Agency Theory suggests that an effective board acts as a monitoring mechanism to align the interests of managers and shareholders, reducing agency costs and enhancing firm performance. Board gender diversity, in particular, contributes to stronger oversight, improved decision-making, and greater accountability. Using quantitative data extracted from the 2021 annual reports, the study analyzes the relationship between the number of female directors and independent directors with firm performance, measured by Return on Assets (ROA). The findings indicate a positive correlation between board gender diversity and firm performance, suggesting that greater female representation on boards strengthens governance effectiveness. However, board independence does not appear to have a significant effect on firm performance, possibly due to varying levels of engagement and expertise among independent directors. These results contribute to the ongoing discussion on corporate governance and firm success, offering insights for policymakers and stakeholders. Given that the percentage of female directors in Malaysia remains relatively stable, the findings may not fully capture the potential long-term effects of increased gender diversity. It is recommended that companies and regulatory bodies further promote gender equality by encouraging higher female participation in the workforce and increasing the representation of women on corporate boards to enhance governance effectiveness and mitigate agency conflict

Project scheduling is a crucial aspect in construction project management that aims to ensure that all tasks are carried out in an optimal sequence to maximize efficiency and reduce completion time. This study has three main objectives: (1) to build a web-based construction project planning system at CV. Haza Mulia Engineering, (2) to apply genetic algorithms to the construction project planning system at CV. Haza Mulia Engineering, and (3) to analyze the performance of genetic algorithms in generating optimal project schedules. This study was motivated by the need to complete a final assignment or thesis and used genetic algorithms as the main method. The research process begins with the identification of tasks and dependencies in a construction project. An initial population consisting of random schedules is generated and evaluated using a genetic algorithm. The selection, crossover, and mutation processes are carried out to gradually produce a new, better population. The fitness of each individual is calculated based on the number of unconnected activity dependencies, and the algorithm stops when the best mutually continuous schedule is found. The main result of this study is a web-based application built using PHP. This application is able to produce more efficient project scheduling compared to conventional methods. The schedule generated by genetic algorithm shows significant reduction in project completion time by minimizing unmet dependencies. The conclusion of this study confirms that the application of genetic algorithm in web-based project planning scheduling can avoid conflicts between activities and make the schedule more structured
