This silence
For clarinet, horn, bassoon and string quintet, duration 15 minutes.
This work was commissioned by the Cologne Philharmonie for the Scharoun Ensemble and is dedicated to Sandy and Jimmy Brown. It was premiered by the Scharoun Ensemble on 12 September 1993 at the Cologne Philharmonie.
The piece has two movements, 'Dance' and 'Dirge' and has been recorded by the Nash Ensemble (Onyx Classics, ONYX4005), see https://onyxclassics.com/release/turnage-this-silence/. This recording is also available on YouTube (see the video tab below)
Your rockaby
For soprano saxophone and orchestra, duration 24 minutes. This work was commissioned by the BBC and premiered on 23 February 1994 by Martin Robertson (soprano saxophone) and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Davis. Lament for a hanging man
For soprano and ensemble, duration 9 minutes, texts from the Lamentations of Jeremiah and Sylvia Plath's "The Hanging Man". This work was commissioned by Musicon with funds provided by Northern Arts. It was premiered on 4 February 1984 by the GEMINI ensemble and Margaret Field (soprano) conducted by Peter Wiegold at the University of Durham. The legacy of Jewish musicians who emigrated to the UK from Nazi-Europe
This paper discussed the practical challenges of representing the history and works of Jewish refugee musicians from Nazi-Europe in the world of concert promotion and public performance. Reflecting on his experience as a practice-based researcher at the Royal College of Music and director of Ensemble Émigré, Norbert spoke about recent projects featuring music by Robert Kahn (1865-1951), Hans Gál (1890-1987), Egon Wellesz (1885-1974) and Peter Gellhorn (1912-2004), and explored themes including ascription of identity, national “ownership” or belonging, transcultural processes and loss

This piece was commissioned by the KlaraFestival, Flanders and was premiered there on 22 September 2005 by Sarah Nicolls.

Two movements for string quartet
For string quartet, duration 15 minutes.
Commissioned jointly by the Royal Philharmonic Society and the BBC as part of Radio 3's New Generation Artists Scheme, this piece was first performed on 2 July 2001 by the Belcea Quartet at the Cheltenham Music Festival.
Subsequent performances have been given by the Tippett Quartet, Ensemble Antipodes, the Matangi Quartet, the Brodowski String Quartet, Callisto Ensemble, and the Volta String Quartet.
This piece won the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Chamber-scale Composition 2002 and is Part 2 of the cycle 'A ribbon of time' which uses the poetry of Emily Dickinson as its starting point.

This piece was commissioned for the 'At Lunch' series by the Britten Sinfonia and the Wigmore Hall. First performed at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris on 1 March 2011 by members of the Britten Sinfonia: Jacqueline Shave (violin), Martin Outram (viola), Caroline Dearnley (cello), Roger Linley (double bass) and Huw Watkins (piano). This work can be performed as the second part of the 'Terrain' cycle of six pieces (see https://researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/id/eprint/1462/). It was premiered by Claire Booth (soprano), Janey Miller (oboe), Joby Burgess (percussion) and Andrew Matthews-Owen (piano) at Kings Place, London on 9 February 2013
Amapolas
For string trio (violin, viola and cello), duration 11.5 minutes.
The piece was commissioned by the Royal Library and the Toyota Foundation and is dedicated to Julia Bardsley and her partner, Andrew Poppy. It was first performed on 18 March 2009 by the Aristos String Trio at Queens Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark.
