    For solo piano, bass flute, heckelphone, harp, cimbalom, one percussionist, mandolin, viola, and bass, duration 15 minutes. This piece was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and the BBC, and first performed in November 1998 by Rolf Hind (piano) and the London Sinfonietta conducted by Elgar Howarth. It has since been performed by Ensemble Modern, Israel Contemporary Players, and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. It was premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, on 30 May 2006, and has since been performed by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and Oberlin Conservatory Contemporary Music Ensemble. Notte Oscura is essentially the first orchestral interlude from the composer's opera The Overcoat (see https://researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/id/eprint/1478/). Originally completed in 2002, it was revised in 2004 and premiered on 30 April 2004 by the Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt conducted by Christoph Mueller.
