Rewards in public administration: A proposed classification
Abstract. Social and administrative sciences categorize rewards with some dimensions. However, these interpretative models seem to be elusive because they do not consider all the elements of rewards system within public administration. The goal of this paper is to suggest a new classification considering formality, tangibility and also legality in order to create a comprehensive interpretative model in public sector. This theoretical framework begins the process of clarifying and generalizing, as far as possible, the manifold elements of rewards system in public administration to lay a foundation for the development of more sophisticated taxonomies and theories directed to fruitful management implications.Keywords. Monetary rewards, Compensation, Salary, Seat of power, Pay, Bribe, Reputation, Abuse of power.JEL. B29, L29, L30, L32, M12, M19, M50
Are democratic regimes antithetical to globalization?
Abstract. In this study we have made an attempt to investigate into the relationship between political regime type (that ranges from authoritarian to democratic) and the extent of globalization which of late has been considered as a path to development. We have made use of the Democracy index (and its constituent indicators) provided by the Economist Intelligence Unit and the globalization index (and its constituent indicators) of the KOF. Applying canonical correlation analysis on the data we have made an attempt to look into the response of globalization to the quantitative measures of democratic (versus authoritarian) practices of the governments in 116 countries distributed over Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and the Americas. We have also tested the Lee thesis in the context of globalization as a path to development. Our findings indicate that the empirical support to Lee’s thesis if extended to globalization as a path to development is superficial and does not withstand critical analysis. Contrary to Lee’s thesis, democracy promotes globalization. In African countries political discordance (at the national as well as international level) is not much favourable while in the Asian countries, political will, irrespective of regime type, is in concordance with globalization. Therefore, it appears that democracies thwart development and by implication, globalization as a means to development.Keywords. Criticizing the critiques of green accounting research
Abstract. Green accounting plays a vital role in current sustainability goals. It aims at accounting for the environment and its maintenance and sustainable practices. Implementation of the GA's policies requires an organizational commitment to an environmental impact. Therefore, considering ecological could affect the economy since the gross domestic products are influenced by the country's climate changes. GA has been faced with several challenges and controversial views. The program has, however, not been adopted in the current accounting systems. Besides, environmental accounting continues to be regarded as an alternative issue to states. Consequently, the involvement of accountants in GA is faced with considerable criticism.Keywords. British imperialism and portfolio choice in the currency boards of Palestine, East Africa, and West Africa
Abstract. Did British colonial policy primarily benefit Britain, or its colonies? Wadan Narsey, in British Imperialism and the Makings of Colonial Currency Systems (2016),claims that Britain established currency boards to help itself at the expense of the colonies. Examining the history of several currency boards and their assets for select years, Narsey finds that under British influence, they held lower-yielding, shorter-maturity British assets than they need have done, costing colonial governments revenue. We explore this idea by analyzing full annual data on the securities and assets of the currency boards of Palestine, East Africa, and West Africa. An accompanying spreadsheet workbook shows the details of the analysis.Keywords. Outsourcing embryos: An examination of the maternal surrogacy market
Abstract. The word “market” brings to mind a grocery shop or perhaps the financial markets. However, with the advancements in reproductive technologies in the last thirty years, there is now an established market for sperm, eggs, fertilization techniques and even wombs. Surrogacy is a topic that most Americans are unfamiliar with; only a small percentage of American couples are infertile. However, surrogacy has made its popular culture debut with Kim Kardashian announcing her use of a maternal surrogate for her third child. I seek to provide an analysis for commercial surrogacy contracts and the gestational surrogacy market. Despite the lack of official statistics on the gestational surrogacy market, it is estimated to grow to a $4 billion global market by 2020, which makes it an interesting market to examine.Keywords.
