Presentación / Miguel Pino Abad y Manuel Torres Aguilar (pp. 9-12). -- Cien años nos contemplan. Exploring Bandwidth Capabilities of Solar Cells for VLC Applications
The growing number of connected wireless devices is causing interference in traditional radio frequency bands, which restricts communications capacity and efficiency. This issue motivates the pursuit of alternative technologies, such as optical wireless communication, which could potentially resolve electromagnetic congestion. This technology leverages the visible and infrared spectrum, along with other wavelengths, to transmit data. Recently, photovoltaic (PV) modules have emerged as an innovative solution for data reception and enhancing self-sufficiency. However, within a range of industrial settings, including factories, warehouses, and offices, data transmission may be affected by fluctuations in lighting conditions. This work focuses on exploring the impact of lighting conditions on the frequency response of visible light communication (VLC) systems that utilize silicon PV cells as photodetectors, a crucial aspect to optimize the efficiency of data transmission. This analysis opens new possibilities for the effective deployment of PV cells as optical receivers in indoor settings, thereby significantly enhancing the usage of VLC technology in industrial applications. This work was supported in part by the MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 through project "ViDiT" under Grant TED2021-129869B-I00, in part by the "European Union NextGeneration EU/PRTR" through "SOFIA" under Grant PID2023-147305OB-C31, in part by the CDTI IDI-FEDER Program, "SecureWorld" through "MediaL- iFi" under Grant EXP 00119337/IDI-20190298, in part by CDTI through "PeroCUBE" under Grant IDI-20200522, in part by the H2020 program, EC, through "Paravasis" under Grant 861985, in part by the CDTI through "Doctorados Industriales" under Grant MIG-20221056, and in part by the AEI under Grant DIN2019-010458. Problems and Solutions Concerning the Distance Protection of Transmission Lines Connected to Inverter-Based Resources
This article presents a review of the problems and solutions concerning the distance protection of transmission lines connected to inverter-based resources (IBRs). After a brief description of IBRs and distance protection, the reported problems are classified based on their causes and effects. The causes are related to IBR behavior, and the effects are related to distance protection. The effects are classified as overall effects (observable wrong trips or an observable lack of activation of distance functions) and specific effects (related to the particular internal relay elements that failed, causing the observable overall effects). Furthermore, special attention is paid to clearly describe the research literature from relay manufacturers, since it should be closer to the current trends related to real-life problems and solutions. The causes and specific effects particularly mentioned in the reviewed literature are summarized in corresponding tables, including information about those papers where such causes and effects cannot be clearly identified

AFDM-based integrated system for underwater detection and communication waveform design
Proceedings of 2025 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 24-27 Mar. 2025, Milan, ItalyAffine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM) is an advanced communication waveform designed specifically for time-varying channels. This chirp-based multicarrier modulation technique is computationally efficient, which enables compact sonar implementations while achieving robust sensing performance through flexible parameter adjustments. Such characteristics make AFDM well-suited for Integrated Systems for Underwater Detection and Communication (ISUDC). In this paper, we explore an AFDM-based ISUDC system and propose a waveform model capable of transmitting multiple symbols to increase data capacity. We derive the Wideband Ambiguity Function (WAF) for this waveform and enhance it using complementary sequence coding, which reduces sensitivity to WAF variations and improves detection accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-based ISUDC waveform, featuring both multi-symbol support and complementary sequence coding, increases data capacity and improves communication bit error rate (BER) compared to traditional ISUDC waveforms. Additionally, the optimized WAF achieves enhanced detection performance, fulfilling critical ISUDC requirements. This study was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) under Grant No. 62371393.
Economic activity and CO2 emissions in Spain
In this paper, we analyse the relationship between the rate of growth of CO2 emissions and economic activity in Spain from 1964 to 2020. We explain CO2 emissions by fitting a structural regression model with selected indicators of economic activity augmented with dynamic common factors extracted from a large macroeconomic database, as explanatory variables. The variables to include in the regression are selected using Machine Learning procedures while we use alternative supervised and non-supervised procedures to extract the factors. We find that, regardless of the procedure used for variable selection, private consumption and maritime transportation have the highest explanatory power for the rate of growth of emissions. We also show that the way the common factors are extracted is crucial to exploit their information content. The common factors extracted by partial least squares add valuable information on top of that of the selected individual indicators, while they are not significant when extracted by two-step-Kalman filter (2SKF).Partially sponsored by "la Caixa" Foundation, grant LCF/PR/SR20/52550012-Climate change and economic challenges for the Spanish society. Crossing National Borders and Nontheatrical Boundaries: The Film Work of Rosina Prado
This article contributes to recovering the lost history of Rosina Prado’s work. Prado was a Spanish-Soviet filmmaker who, along with Sara Gómez, was one of the first women to direct films in Cuba, where she worked for the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) between 1961 and 1968. Drawing on feminist forms of archival and historical research, as well as in-depth personal interviews with Rosina Prado’s relatives and collaborators, we explore Prado’s condition as a migrant mother and antifascist exiled woman filmmaker in Cuba. We also probe the uncertainties surrounding Rosina Prado’s films and their circulation in postrevolutionary Cuba and more recently, in times of digital technological transition. Finally, we consider how these factors have contributed to Rosina Prado’s erasure from film history, leaving her as a little-known filmmaker whose documentaries remain virtually unseen. This article benefited from a research stay granted by the Fundación Carolina at the Departamento de Comunicación of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (December 2022-February 2023)
Polluting Student Test Performance: School-Based Evidence on the Adverse effects of Air Pollution
This study investigates the relationship between air pollution and children’s performance on cognitive tests, focusing on characteristics of individuals often assumed to be stable, such as cognitive ability and cognitive effort. Against the backdrop of mounting environmental concerns and policies striving for sustainable cities and inclusive communities, it aims to answer two main questions: (i) whether air pollution is negatively associated with children’s performance on tests of cognitive ability and cognitive effort, and (ii) whether socioeconomic status moderates these associations, or in other words, whether poor air quality dispropor-tionately thwarts the development of disadvantaged children. Specifically, we examine the influence of four different pollutants (CO, NO2, O3 and PM2.5) and two different test out-comes: children’s cognitive ability and effort. We hypothesize that air pollution reduces performance on both tests, and that children with low socioeconomic status may be more susceptible to adverse pollution effects, as high SES families may have ways to compensate for the air pollution their children are exposed to at school. By combining data on 1,368 fifth-grade students (around age 11) from a lab-in-the-field study in Madrid and Berlin with air pollution data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service and weather data from the E-OBS dataset, the study employs multilevel linear mixed models to investigate how cumulative air pollution is associated with cognitive ability and effort across different pollutants and time spans of cumulative pollution. The results show significant negative relationships between cumulative air pollution and both cognitive ability and effort, with the strongest association observed between cumulative ozone exposure two months prior to the test and cognitive ability. In contrast to our second hypothesis, no heterogeneous effects are found by socioeconomic status. This research has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 758600)
