The physical properties and stability of purple yam (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam ) lipstick
The purple yam (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam) has a useful anthocyanin as a natural dye which safer compare to the synthetic dyes. Anthocyanins have the antioxidant effect that can capture free radicals. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of purple yam extract in various concentrations on the physical properties and physical stability of lipstick. Lipstick was made in three formulas that is L01, L02, L03. To evaluate the quality of the product, the physical properties, and stability test for purple yam lipsticks were conducted. Physical properties test consisted of organoleptic tests, melting point test, hardness test, homogeneity test, the Pap test, and pH test. Lipstick stability tests were performed by stored lipstick for 30 days at room temperature 25 °C, then observed the change of shape, color, and odor during storage. “W†a top market leader lipstick in Indonesia was used as a control. Observed data of melting point, strength, and pH of lipstick were analyzed using One Way ANOVA and continued with Tukey. Organoleptic data, homogeneity, topicality and lipstick stability were described descriptively. The results showing no significant differences between lipstick L01, L02, L03 in organoleptic, homogeneity, pH and lipstick physical stability. However, when comparing with W lipstick, there is a significant difference in the melting, hardness and smearing points between L01, L02, L03 lipstick with W lipstick. It was concluded that purple yam extract may influence the physical properties of lipstick in particular melting point and hardness of lipstick. Although it has no effect on the stability of purple yum lipstick
Formulation and physical stability test of oleanolic acid cream and gel
Plantago major has been empirically used for wound healing. One of its chemical compounds, oleanolic acid, exhibited wound healing activity on hyperglycemic rats. The aims of this study were to (1) formulate oleanolic acid into topical dosage forms i.e. cream and gel; and (2) evaluate the physical stability of the products. Oleanolic acid was formulated into the dosage forms using stearic acid, isopropyl palmitate and cetyl alcohol as the cream base and carbomer as the gel base. Cream and gel were then subjected into accelerated (40±2°C/75±5% RH) and room temperature (27±2°C/73±5% RH) stability test for six weeks. Physical stability was determined using parameters of visual appearance, specific gravity, viscosity and flow properties, for both gel and cream, as well as the type of emulsion and particle size for the cream. Data analysis were performed using one-way ANOVA and paired t-test. It is concluded that gel and cream of oleanolic acid were able to maintain their visual appearance, specific gravity, viscosity and flow properties during six weeks of storage. In addition, oleanolic acid cream could also maintain its particle size and type of emulsion during testing.Â
Improvement of family caregivers’ knowledge of polypharmacy in the elderly after health education
The different health problems in elderly patients require complex management. However, if the use of medicines is uncontrolled, it will lead to polypharmacy. This study aimed to analyze the effect of health education on family caregivers’ knowledge of polypharmacy particularly to prevent drug therapy problem in elderly patients. This quasi-experimental study used one-group pre-test post-test design. The population was family caregivers who had elderly members in their care and lived within the working area of Bengkuring Public Health Center. The population members were selected according to the inclusion criteria until a minimum sample size was reached. Having met the criteria, the respondents were asked to fill in a pre-test questionnaire before they partook in the health education for polypharmacy and a post-test questionnaire after their participation. The pre-test and post-test information were then analyzed using a paired t-test. This study revealed that the family caregivers’ knowledge of polypharmacy improved by 32.5% with a probability value (p= 0.000< 0.001) less than the level of significance (5%). The contribution of the health education to the family caregivers’ knowledge of polypharmacy was 74.3%. There was an improvement in the family caregivers’ knowledge of polypharmacy after participating in the health education
Inhibition of HMG CoA Reductase and Lipid Peroxidation in The Rats Liver by Selected Zingiberaceae
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. One of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease is hyperlipidemia. This study aimed to determine the potential of Zingiberaceae (10 species) as inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation. This study was conducted by 2 methods including assay of HMG CoA reductase inhibition and lipid peroxidation test. The study was performed by in vitro method, using 20% rat liver homogenate. The inhibition of HMG CoA reductase enzyme was done by reacting liver homogenate, HMG CoA substrate, which added the Zingiberaceae extract compared with simvastatin as standard drug. The absorbance of the mixture was measured by a Microlab 300 spectrophotometer at a 340 nm wavelength. Lipid peroxidation assay was induced by the FeSO4.7H2O solution. The absorbance value measured using a spectrophotometer at a 532 nm wavelength. Lipid peroxidation inhibition was characterized by absorbance of the test extract, compared with the control group. The obtained data was calculated as percent of inhibition and was used to calculate IC50 extract test. The results showed that the 10 ethanolic extracts of Zingiberaceae rhizomes have activity as enzyme inhibitor HMG-CoA reductase with IC50 value range 65.8±4.1 – 203.3±15.2 ppm, and inhibition of lipid peroxidation with IC50 value range 13.5±5.0 – 219.6±4.3 ppm. This study can be concluded that the Zingiberaceae rhizomes have potential role as antihyperlipidemic agents through inhibition of HMG CoA reductase enzyme activity and preventing lipid peroxidation
Effect of the ethanolic extract of red roselle calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) on hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes in healthy volunteers
Roselle calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L) is widely used as an antioxidant, antihepatotoxic, diuretic, anti-cholesterol, and immunostimulant. Roselle contains anthocyanin and quercetin that have antioxidant activity. This study aimed to determine the effects of the ethanolic extract of roselle calyx on hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes in healthy volunteers during the 30-day administration and 15 days after it ceased. This study employed pre- and post-treatment design on 21 healthy volunteers, comprising 11 males and 10 females who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and filled out the informed consent form willingly. Volunteers were provided with roselle capsules for 30 days with a dosage of 500 mg a day taken 10-15 minutes after dinner. The hematologic examination was performed on Day 0, 31, and 45, including the measurement of hematocrit, platelet, and erythrocyte levels using a hematology analyzer. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS with paired t-test and Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes of all male and female volunteers on Day 0, 31, and 45 were within the normal range. The comparison analysis affirmed that there was no significant difference between these three parameters from Day 0 to 31, Day 31 to 45, and Day 0 to 45 (p>0.05). As a conclusion, the administration of the ethanolic extract of roselle calyx with a dosage of one 500mg capsule per day for 30 days did not affect the hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes in healthy volunteers. There was also no delayed effect on these three hematological parameters 15 days after the administration stopped

Isolation, identification, phytochemical screening, and antibacterial activity of Aspergillus sp. MFD-01, an endophytic fungus derived from Mesua ferrea
We have successfully isolated and identified endophytic fungi from medicinal plant Mesua ferrea L. grown at Banyumas were for the first time. One of those fungi was MFD-01. In this study, we report the isolation, identification, antibacterial activity, and phytochemical screening of Aspergillus sp. MFD-01. The endophytic fungus was isolated from the leaves of M. ferrea by subsequent inoculation on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The identification was based on its morphology and ITS-DNA sequence. The antibacterial activity was determined by dilution method. The identification of compounds in ethyl acetate extract of it was conducted according to the standart phytochemical screening method. MFD-01 was identified as Aspergillus sp. MFD-01. The ethyl acetate extract of Aspergillus sp. MFD-01 inhibited the growth of both Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. At concentration of 1000 ppm, its diameter of inhibitory zone against those bacteria was 10.53 and 11.84, respectively. The extract contained flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins, which might responsible for its antibacterial activity against both tested bacteria
Determination of sun protection factor and antioxidant properties of cream formulation of kencur (Kaempferia galanga L) and temu kunci (Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schlecht) rhizomes extract
Kencur (Kaempferia galanga, L.) rhizome contain ethyl-p-methoxycinnamate (EPMS) which has sunscreen properties. Temu kunci (Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb) Schlecht) rhizome contains flavonoid and essential oils with radical scavenging properties. The aims of this study were to obtain the optimum physical properties of sunscreen and antioxidant cream and to compare the sun protection factor (SPF) values and antioxidant activity of kencur and temu kunci rhizomes extract before and after formulated. This research used Simplex Latice Design (SLD) model with 2 components of kencur extract and temu kunci extract. Based on the SLD model obtained optimum formula design, then the SPF values and antioxidant activity were studied by UV spectrophotometric method and DPPH method respectively. Based on SLD model obtained optimum formula that containing kencur : temu kunci extract 80%:20% (formula A) and 70%:30% (formula B). The SPF values of kencur extract, formula A and formula B were 4.505, 5.024 and 4.511 respectively. Antioxidant activity showed that the IC50 of formula A, formula B, temu kunci extract, BHT and Vitamin E were 109.15 μg/mL, 95.23 μg/mL, 10.20 μg/mL, 22.33 μg/mL and 8.78 μg/mL respectively. Cream formula A and formula B have optimum physical properties. The SPF value of the optimum formulations were higher than SPF value of kencur extract. Antioxidant activity of that combinations were lower than temu kunci extract, BHT and Vitamin E
The validation of patient knowledge questionnaire for patients with diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia
Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) with Hyperlipidemia increased in Indonesia, where both diseases have a risk of complications towards cardiovascular disease. DM patients with hyperlipidemia require proper management to control blood sugar, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Knowledge is one of the important factors in improving adherence therapy and quality of life of DM-hyperlipidemia patients, especially in controlling blood glucose level and total cholesterol levels. This study aims to develop a patient questionnaire of DM-hyperlipidemia.The study used cross sectional method. Inclusion criteria were patients aged 18 – 70 years old, diagnosed DM-Hyperlipidemia, getting at least 1 oral antidiabetic and oral anti-cholesterol. The questionnaire item of knowledge was developed based on gudeline therapy and previous research reference. Expert validation is done on Doctor who had expert in DM and clinical psychologist. The pilot test was performed on 10 healthy patients and 10 patients of DM-hyperlipidemia who had eligible inclusion criteria. Validation of questionnaire was done on 30 patients of DM-Hyperlipidemia who undergoing therapy at outpatient clinic of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Yogyakarta. Data collection was done by interviewing questionnaires in patients. Analysis of data using SPSS with product moment validation test and cronbach alpha to see the reliability of questionnaire.Validation results show there are some invalid items that are in questions 9, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17, the range of questions about knowledge about hyperlipidemia, medication and general health. Re-validation without invalid item was done and obtained value r> 0.3, with value of Cronbach alpha 0,715.The DM-Hyperlipidemia patient questionnaire was valid and reliable to measure the level of knowledge of DM patients with Dysipidemia. Â
The relationship between patient satisfaction and effectiveness of insulin-based therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus at Ulin Regional Public Hospital, Banjarmasin
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) can cause significant problems to the quality of life as it may increase the risk of complications. Dissatisfaction with therapy also contributes to its low effectiveness. Therapeutic satisfaction has an essential role in DM management, i.e., to optimize the effectiveness of the treatment. It is also believed to affect the decision-making process regarding patients‘ healthrelated issues. A routine assessment of the satisfaction of DM patients is useful for health professionals in identifying the potential problems experienced by those who are in the middle of DM treatment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between patient satisfaction and effectiveness of insulin-based therapy for type 2 DM at Ulin Regional Public Hospital, Banjarmasin. This research is a nonexperimental study with a cross-sectional design. The data were collected prospectively with purposive sampling method from the type 2 DM patients at the Pharmacy Installation of Ulin Regional Public Hospital, Banjarmasin. While the therapeutic satisfaction data were obtained using the Patient Satisfaction with Insulin Therapy (PSIT) questionnaire, the effectiveness of the therapy was identified by examining the HbA1c values. Fifty-six (56) respondents participated and filled in the questionnaire, and the answers were processed with bivariate analysis, namely the chi-square test. The results showed that the respondents‘ satisfaction with the treatments was mostly on a medium level according to 33 patients (58.9%). However, only 3.6% respondents found the therapy effective (HbA1c <6.5%). The remaining 96.4% thought that it was less effective in controlling diabetes. Based on the statistical analysis results, there is a significantly positive relationship between patient satisfaction and HbA1c value ([r= 0.828]; [p= 0.000]). There is also a significant positive relationship between patient satisfaction and the effectiveness of therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes at the Pharmacy Installation of Ulin Regional Public Hospital, Banjarmasin
