The ethnographic collection preserved at the Science Academy of Lisbon hosts a wide range of Amazonian objects. Among them we find a bamboo tablet belonging to the Kambeba people of the Upper Solimões region that was collected between 1783 and 1792 by Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira. It was used for cranial deformation, a practice that is being recovered by the Kambeba as a way to reinforce their ethnic identity. In this essay, we will focus on the different meanings that tablet have been holding according to the political, economic and cultural context, in particular as far as it concerns the perspective of the naturalist and that of the contemporary Kambeba.

The abolition of slavery in the French colonies generates a new flow of migration from Asia. Several Indian migrants reach the coasts of the Antilles as contract laborers in the sugarcane fields. In the archipelago they suffer from the violence of European settlers who, through the imposition of Christian worship and the destruction of traditional elements of Indian culture, undertake a process of annihilating a centuries-old identity. However, the population manages to resist, reinventing itself, through the confluence of syncretistic elements.

I am interested in analyzing the replica as a condensing element of the encounter scene between Cuban and Nicaraguan artists. At the same time, I intend to understand artistic practices as producers of de-totalizing exchange relations. I argue that the replica, as a mimetic reproduction of the original, also includes the effects of the copied object, in this case, the capacity to produce de-totalizing relations. By this I mean the capacity to create alliances that defy the division of the population into enemies and militants, revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries, the logic that sustains the One Party.

This article discusses current expressions violence in Central America based on the foundational book “Harvest of Violence in Guatemala” edited by Robert M. Carmack in 1988, and the panel “Central America beyond post-conflict: making and unmaking contemporaneity” presented at the Europan Association of Social Anthropology in July of 2024. Placing both compilations of ethnographic work side by side, allows us to observe the violence continuum in the region and reflect on what the anthropological work can provide to a regional understanding of post-conflict societies. This article discusses current expressions violence in Central America based on the foundational book “Harvest of Violence in Guatemala” edited by Robert M. Por uma geografia da subalternidade feminina: “Tanta gente, Mariana” de Maria Judite de Carvalho

The article focuses on Tanta gente, Mariana (1959) with the aim of analysing the ways in which the author, through the trajectories of the protagonists, contributes to designing a geography of subalternity feminine. Both the space and its inhabitants are mirrors of a hostile context that confines these women inexorably out of place. The eponymous novel and “A Menina Arminda”, in particular, provide a reflection on the deaf revolt of all those women who, escaping the pre-established paths, refuse to conform to the roles of wives, mothers and good housewives.O artigo centra-se na obra Tanta gente, Mariana (1959) com o intuito de analisar as maneiras com que a autora, através das trajetórias das protagonistas, contribui a desenhar uma geografia da subalternidade feminina.

Between 1936 and 1940, the administration of the openly philo-fascist Manuel Antonio Fresco as the governor of the province of Buenos Aires involved deep transformations in the practices and discourses that shaped the governance of Argentina's first province. Italian education in La Plata, the province’s capital, was not exempt from this process. This article explores the trajectory of the Società di Cultura Italica “Vittorio Emanuele III” in La Plata, dedicated to children and youth, during the period of ideological alignment with Fresco’s government – a period not devoid of tensions.
