This paper examines the manifestations of the death drive in Alejandra Pizarnik's work, Extracción de la piedra de locura (1968). When the Argentine poet selected the poems that make up this work, she chose texts developed between 1962 and 1964. Extracción represents her mature collection, while concurrently revealing the severe existential crisis of the author. The analysis of the verses demonstrates a tendency towards self-destruction and death. However, it starts from the initial hypothesis that the poetry collection is a confessional text, not a suicide note.

This article suggests a reinterpretation of Vergílio Ferreira’s novel Manhã Submersa (1954) as an allegory of Salazarism. By searching for those semantic isotopies that support this interpretation, it will be shown how what the author had to conceal through disguises, rhetorical and discursive strategies, to escape censorship. In reality, these elements are clearly traceable within the text: through the story of an individual who, metonymically, embodies the entire Portuguese population, Ferreira denounces the contemporary society and its suffocating atmosphere.

Based on the ethnographic description of a recent event — a road accident in July 2022 — the paper analyzes the mechanization process of indigenous worlds and, in particular, of the practical consequences of the diffusion of motorcycles among the Chacobo (Panoan) of the Bolivian Amazon. The event is analyzed as a social drama that allows to shed light on some of the social, ethnic, economic, technological and environmental transformations that are currently reshaping the indigenous reality in the South American lowlands. Full text link
The article reflects on the relevance of El viento de los reinos, a poem by the Chilean author Efraín Barquero (1931-2020), in light of the recent publication of its second edition, more than fifty years after the release of the first one. In particular, we study the notion of “mythical time” that emerges from the poem and the way in which it presents itself as an alternative to the notion of “historical time”, in order to evaluate the consequences that such an option generates in the configuration of the identity of the contemporary Western individual.

This paper explores the discursive construction of the male characters of the Spanish miniseries Antidisturbios created by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña and premiered on Movistar + on 16 October 2020. Combining a qualitative methodology (film analysis and critical discourse analysis applied to gender studies) with a quantitative approach to the script of the series, the study focuses on the representation of the six riot police officers, paying attention both to how their roles reproduce hegemonic masculinity and to any new form of masculinity that can be observed in response to that normative pattern.

The knowledge and territorial practices of quilombola communities and other traditional peoples of Brazil are opposed to the economic logic of globalized capitalism. However, attempts to incorporate these experiences into the neoliberal agenda are increasingly pressing, often carried out in the name of environmental ethic and development. Through the analysis of the quilombola community of Frechal (Maranhão), this contribution highlights the forms of resistance activated by afro-descendants’ groups and their local elaborations of sustainability.I saperi e le pratiche territoriali delle comunità quilombola e degli altri popoli tradizionali del Brasile si contrappongono alla logica economica del capitalismo globalizzato.

Generational Shadows: Parties of Memory and Hope in El Salvador

This essay contemplates generation and memory in the recent history of El Salvador. At its core are stories shared by a rising generation of young, middle-class activists with little or no direct memory of the 1980-1992 civil war — and their parents, who lived the war and celebrated the 1992 peace agreements. I contend that the way different generational memories took form, and the form their stories took, emerged from the liberal orientations that permeated the political trajectories of the activists and their parents. However, their stories diverged according to generation: the young activists felt the chill of the “generational shadows” of those who fought, or at least lived, the war.

Central America has been interpreted through the category of “post-conflict”, a category that has exhausted its analytical potential. Based on the cases presented in the dossier, this article proposes to interpret the transformations affecting this geographical area, beyond the effects of the Cold War, understanding it as a laboratory in which the current contradictions of the global world are expressed. This complexity calls for a reorientation of the social sciences' gaze, without the overcoming of the category implying the deprivation of social analysis of a necessary historical depth.
