Bushy-Crested Hornbills Successfully Hunting Flying Bats in Gomantong Caves, Malaysia
Hornbills living in tropical forests are predominantly frugivorous, but some species incorporate small animals into their diets,
and bats have only been anecdotally recorded among their prey. However, it is not well known how they are captured and how
often. We observed bushy-crested hornbills (Anorrhinus galeritus) capturing wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bats (Mops plicatus) in
flight as thousands of them emerged from a large cave-roost in Bornean Malaysia. At least eight individuals successfully hunted
flying bats by perching on dry branches hanging from the main entrance of the cave, using two tactics: (1) by jumping and making short flights until catching the flying bats (i.e., hawking), and (2) perching, waiting for bats that fly by at short distances,
catching them with quick movements of the beak (i.e., snatching). This does not appear to be an anecdotal behavior, but rather
one that has gone unnoticed until now. The number of hornbills hunting was greater than that of bat hawks (Machaeramphus
alcinus), a diurnal raptor specialized in hunting bats. Further systematic monitoring of these and other diurnal avian predators
is necessary to fully understand the pressure they exert on bats

Religious Minorities in the Spanish Public Sphere: Ethnographic Contributions for Improving the Public Management of Religious Diversity
When designing, implementing and assessing public policies, and, in particular, those
affecting the public management of religious diversity, it is increasingly common to include
ethnographic approaches from the field of social anthropology and the broader social
sciences. Ethnographic practice can provide more representative and accurate perspectives
on the actors, settings, and social phenomena subject to regulation. This article presents the
findings of an ethnographic study on two minority religious communities, conducted by a
team of anthropologists within the framework of a broader research project on religious
freedom in Spain, led by jurists. Based on two case studies—the teaching of Evangelical
religion in state schools and Islamic burial practices—our study analyses the implications of
the varying degrees of public recognition, as well as how this recognition actually manifests
in the everyday practice of religious groups within a context of religious diversity. The
study also examines the barriers to the full participation of these communities in public
institutions and civil society, as well as the discourses, strategies, and practices they develop

Common spaces in the sonnets to the Virgin by Carlos Pellicer and José Lezama Lima
Carlos Pellicer y José Lezama Lima escribieron sonetos dedicados a la Virgen María en los años
cuarenta, cuando todavía no se conocían ni habían leído sus respectivas obras. A pesar de ello,
y teniendo en cuenta que sus presupuestos estéticos y sus estilos eran muy diferentes, existen
paralelismos y semejanzas notables entre ambas series de sonetos, sobre todo entre el primero y
cuarto de los sonetos de Lezama, y la primera serie y la cuarta de tres sonetos de Pellicer. Su poesía
puede estudiarse bajo el paraguas teórico que alude a las semejanzas y diferencias entre la poesía
religiosa, la ascética y la mística. Lezama es hermético y barroco en sus procedimientos escriturarios,
y Pellicer más sencillo y rico en sensaciones físicas constatables en parámetros cronotópicos. Sin
embargo, al final de cada uno de estos homenajes en forma de sonetos, Lezama aporta cierta sencillez
y Pellicer se contagia del hermetismo y la abstracción de los fenómenos místicos, lo que contribuye a
la configuración de espacios comunes entre las obras de los dos poetas.Carlos Pellicer and José Lezama Lima wrote sonnets dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the 1940s, when
their respective works were not yet known by each other. In spite of this, and taking into account
that their aesthetic presuppositions and styles were very different, there are remarkable parallels
and similarities between both series of sonnets, especially between the first and fourth of Lezama’s
sonnets, and the first series and the fourth of three sonnets by Pellicer. His poetry can be studied
under the theoretical umbrella that alludes to the similarities and differences between religious,
ascetic and mystical poetry. Lezama is hermetic and baroque in his writing procedures, and Pellicer
is simpler and richer in physical sensations ascertainable in chronotopic parameters. However, at the
end of each of these sonnet homages, Lezama brings a certain simplicity and Pellicer is infected by the hermeticism and abstraction of mystical phenomena, which contributes to the configuration of
common spaces between the works of the two poets
Detritivore-driven seed viability gains ofset seed loss from forivores in a semiarid herb
Background and aims:
Florivory poses a threat to the sexual reproductive success of plants, having both quantitative and qualitative effects by reducing seed yield and seed quality. Plants can resist herbivory, tolerate damage, or employ a mix of these strategies to mitigate fitness costs. Organisms such as detritivores can increase nutrient availability in the rhizosphere, although it remains uncertain how plants invest these additional resources in contexts with and without herbivory, which may be particularly relevant in resource-limited ecosystems.
Methods:
We investigated the combined effects of detritivore beetle larvae and specialist florivorous pierid caterpillars on a semiarid Brassicaceae herb in a field setting, manipulating the abundance of both detritivores and floral herbivores across a full factorial density gradient.
Results:
Despite promoting tolerance (surplus production of reproductive tissue) and increasing resistance (increased glucosinolate production), a high density of floral herbivores negatively impacted seed production. However, this mixed plant response led to a non-linear relationship between herbivore density and damage, demonstrating its effectiveness against herbivory. Increasing detritivore density did not affect seed production, nor did it enable plants to better resist or compensate for florivore damage. Instead, high detritivore density had an independent transgenerational effect by increasing the emergence rate of seedlings, thereby favouring seed quality over quantity.
Conclusion:
Prioritising seed quality over quantity may be an adjustment of the reproductive strategy to ensure seedling establishment in harsh and unpredictable environments at the cost of fewer offspring. The seven deadly sins: measuring overvaluation of social media with the Plannet 25 scale
Background: Problematic social media use refers to the excessive and maladaptive use of social media platforms,
which negatively affects personal, social, and professional functioning. Although linked to mental health issues such
as depression, anxiety, and loneliness, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A potential contributing factor
to Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU) is the overvaluation of the relative utility of social media, where individuals
disproportionately overvalue social media for different utility domains (e.g., communication or emotional regulation).
This study aimed to develop and validate the Plan-net 25 scale, which was designed to assess overvaluation of the
relative utility of social media in adolescents.
Methods: The study followed three phases. Initially, a Delphi panel of 14 experts evaluated items across different
utility domains. A pilot study involving 17 adolescents was conducted, and cognitive interviews were subsequently
used to refine the scale items. Finally, the scale was administered to a large sample of 2,477 adolescents aged 12–20
years in Spain, alongside assessments of depression, anxiety, loneliness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and problematic
social media use. The analyses included confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson correlation, and network analysis, all of
which were conducted via R 4.3.2.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the theoretical seven-factor structure, capturing the following
overvaluation of the relative utility of social media domains: social interaction, meeting new people, emotional
regulation, social acceptance, staying informed, self-expression, and boredom management. The scale demonstrated
full measurement invariance across gender and age groups (early and late adolescence). Significant correlations
were found between overvaluation of the relative utility of social media, problematic social media use, and mental
health indicators, with the emotional regulation and entertainment overvaluation of the relative utility of social media
domains showing the strongest associations with problematic social media use.
Conclusions: The Plan-net-25 scale exhibited robust psychometric properties, suggesting that it is a promising tool

Evaluating the Clinical Validity of Commercially Available Virtual Reality Headsets for Visual Field Testing: A Systematic Review
Virtual reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional
perimetry for assessing visual fields. However, the clinical validity of commercially available VR-based perimetry devices remains uncertain due to variability in hardware, software,
and testing protocols. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines
to evaluate the validity of VR-based perimetry compared to the Humphrey Field Analyzer
(HFA). Literature searches were performed across MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of
Science. Studies were included if they assessed commercially available VR-based visual
field devices in comparison to HFA and reported visual field outcomes. Devices were
categorized by regulatory status (FDA, CE, or uncertified), and results were synthesized
narratively. Nineteen studies were included. Devices such as Heru, Olleyes VisuALL,
and the Advanced Vision Analyzer showed promising agreement with HFA metrics, especially in moderate to advanced glaucoma. However, variability in performance was
observed depending on disease severity, population type, and device specifications. Limited dynamic range and lack of eye tracking were common limitations in lower-complexity
devices. Pediatric validation and performance in early-stage disease were often suboptimal.
Several VR-based perimetry systems demonstrate clinically acceptable validity compared
to HFA, particularly in certain patient subgroups. However, broader validation, protocol
standardization, and regulatory approval are essential for widespread clinical adoption.
These devices may support more accessible visual field testing through telemedicine and
decentralized care
Preventing Sepsis in Preterm Infants with Bovine Lactoferrin: A Randomized Trial Exploring Immune and Antioxidant Effects
Background/Objectives: Late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (<1500 g and/or gestational
age <32 weeks), with limited preventive strategies. We evaluated whether early enteral
bovine lactoferrin (bLf), given its antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties, reduces LOS and improves immunologic, antioxidant, and hematologic markers
in these infants. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial,
103 VLBW infants received bLf (150 mg/kg/day; n = 50) or the placebo (n = 53) within
72 h of birth for four weeks or until discharge. Outcomes included culture-confirmed
LOS, mortality, and major morbidities. Risk ratios (RRs) were calculated, adjusting for
gestational age, human milk intake, and ventilatory support when ≥25 events occurred.
Pre/post changes in cytokines, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and hemoglobin (Hb) were
analyzed for interaction effects (time x intervention). Results: bLf reduced LOS (adjusted
RR 0.54; 95% CI 0.31–0.93; p = 0.028), without differences in other morbidities or mortality. bLf preserved MCP-1 levels, declining in the placebo group (interaction p = 0.022).
Among LOS infants receiving bLf, IL-6 remained stable and MCP-1 increased, while both
declined in other groups (interaction p = 0.007 for IL-6; p = 0.052 for MCP-1). Although
TAC showed a non-significant interaction, the placebo group declined (p = 0.002), while
bLf remained stable (p = 0.400) in the post hoc analysis. In non-transfused infants, bLf
increased Hb by 0.9 g/dL vs. controls (p = 0.028). Conclusions: Early bLf supplementation
safely reduces LOS in VLBW infants and may support immunologic, antioxidant, and
