    La Historia, el Franquismo y los tiempos contemporáneos

    Este capítulo ofrece una reflexión historiográfica y metodológica sobre la práctica de la historia contemporánea a partir de la experiencia investigadora del autor, centrada especialmente en la Guerra Civil española y la dictadura franquista. A través de un enfoque claramente comprometido con la Historia Social, el autor analiza temas como la represión, la violencia estructural, el hambre bajo el franquismo y la memoria del régimen, destacando la centralidad del poder y la desigualdad en la comprensión del pasado. La narrativa parte de la convicción de que la historia debe tener una función social y estar anclada en el presente, no solo para explicar los procesos históricos, sino también para enfrentarse a los mitos, silencios y distorsiones construidos por los regímenes autoritarios. En ese marco, se destaca el papel del historiador como agente intelectual comprometido con la democracia y con el desmantelamiento de relatos oficiales legitimadores de dictaduras. El texto también aborda la problemática del acceso a los archivos en España, subrayando las limitaciones legislativas y estructurales que obstaculizan la investigación del franquismo. Asimismo, se analiza críticamente la pérdida de hegemonía del discurso histórico académico frente a la proliferación de narrativas construidas desde la memoria, los medios de comunicación o la política. Finalmente, se propone revitalizar la Historia Social, incorporando perspectivas socioculturales y transnacionales que permitan abordar de forma compleja los desafíos del presente: desde la emergencia de la extrema derecha hasta la crisis ecológica y la transformación digital. Frente a un contexto global marcado por el negacionismo, el autor reivindica una historia rigurosa, comprometida y útil socialmente, que recupere su capacidad explicativa sin renunciar al análisis crítico ni a su función democrática.This chapter presents a historiographical and methodological reflection on the practice of contemporary history, grounded in the author's extensive research on the Spanish Civil War and Francoist dictatorship. From a distinctly Social History perspective, the chapter explores key themes such as repression, structural violence, famine under Franco, and the regime’s memory, emphasizing the importance of power and inequality in historical analysis. The narrative is driven by the conviction that history must serve a social function and remain rooted in the present—not merely to explain historical processes, but to confront the myths, silences, and distortions perpetuated by authoritarian regimes. Within this framework, the historian is portrayed as an intellectual actor committed to democracy and to challenging legitimizing narratives of dictatorship. The chapter also addresses the issue of archival access in Spain, highlighting the legal and institutional barriers that hinder research on the Francoist past. Additionally, it offers a critical examination of the loss of academic history’s discursive dominance in the face of proliferating narratives shaped by memory, media, and politics. In conclusion, the author advocates for the revitalization of Social History by incorporating sociocultural and transnational perspectives that respond to the complexities of the present: from the rise of the far right to the ecological crisis and digital transformation. Against a global backdrop increasingly defined by denialism and historical simplification, the chapter calls for a rigorous, engaged, and socially relevant historiography—one that reclaims its explanatory power without abandoning critical analysis or its democratic role

    El eje viscero-vagal-cerebral en la regulación homeostática y el refuerzo no homeostático

    The vagal-brain axis is considered an important two-way communication highway between the viscera and the brain. The vagus nerve carries information relevant to homeostatic behaviours such as food intake and hydromineral regulation, but its terminals also contain chemical receptors for various hormones and substances of abuse. By using animal models and CNS intervention techniques (chemical and electrolytic lesions, electrical and chemical brain activation, systemic administration of products...), together with behavioural recording, the Psychobiology research group (CTS-430) has been focused on the study of this axis through three lines of research: (A) One line of research focuses on their involvement in the rapid processing of satiety-relevant signals, the reinforcing value of nutrients, and the role of the cephalic phase of ingestion. B) Another line of research examines the role of the tuberomammillary nuclei and the median eminence in regulating water and mineral salt intake and excretion, as well as the compensatory effects of oxytocin, a natriuretic hormone. C) A third line focuses on the functional characterisation of a circuit running through the visceral-vagal-brain system involved in processing the hedonic-affective component of reward, which may be common to substances of abuse. Disruption to these pathways can result in severe behavioural and mood disorders, such as obesity, anorexia, diabetes insipidus, and the compulsive seeking behaviours typical of addictions and depression.     Beyond the window: the impact of the visual home environment on psychological restoration during lockdown episodes

    Este estudio analiza el grado de influencia de diversas características habitacionales —especialmente la capacidad restauradora del paisaje observado desde las viviendas— en el malestar psicológico generado en situaciones de inmovilidad domiciliaria. La metodología parte de una encuesta online realizada durante el confinamiento domiciliario ocasionado por la enfermedad por Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). En ella se consideraron variables espaciales como la localización, la amplitud de la vivienda y la valoración subjetiva del paisaje visible desde la vivienda. El análisis estadístico se estructura en tres niveles: primero, mediante tablas de contingencia y test chi-cuadrado, explorando asociaciones marginales y construyendo perfiles en función de variables demográficas y ambientales relacionadas con la presencia de sentimientos negativos; posteriormente, se emplea un árbol de decisión para detectar combinaciones de factores que explican patrones de respuesta complejos; finalmente, se ajusta un modelo de regresión logística múltiple para cuantificar los efectos individuales e interactivos mediante medidas de significación estadística y odds ratios. Los resultados muestran que las personas jóvenes y aquellas que no valoraban previamente las vistas desde su vivienda fueron las más afectadas en términos emocionales, mientras que el hecho de disponer de una vivienda más amplia ayudó a reducir ese impacto. Además, la valoración positiva del paisaje observado desde el domicilio está relacionada con una mayor restauración psicológica. Estas conclusiones refuerzan la importancia de la planificación territorial y del diseño urbanístico en la calidad de vida, destacando la necesidad de integrar el paisaje en las estrategias de ordenación del territorio y desarrollo urbano. La investigación aporta evidencia sobre cómo los elementos espaciales influyen en la percepción y el bienestar de la población, destacando el papel fundamental de la Geografía en el estudio de la interacción entre las personas y su entorno construido.This study analyzes the degree of influence of various housing characteristics, especially the restorative capacity of the landscape observed from within the home, on the psychological distress experienced during situations of residential immobility. The methodology is based on an online survey conducted during the home confinement imposed by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The survey considered spatial variables such as location, dwelling size, and the subjective assessment of the visible landscape from the home. The statistical analysis is structured into three levels: first, contingency tables and chi-square tests were used to explore marginal associations and to build profiles based on demographic and environmental variables related to the presence of negative emotions; second, a decision tree was employed to identify combinations of factors that explain complex response patterns; finally, a multiple logistic regression model was applied to quantify individual and interactive effects using statistical significance measures and odds ratios. The results show that young people and those who did not previously value the view from their home were the most emotionally affected, whereas having a larger dwelling helped mitigate this impact. Furthermore, a positive assessment of the landscape observed from the home is associated with greater psychological restoration. These findings reinforce the importance of territorial planning and urban design in shaping quality of life, emphasizing the need to integrate landscape considerations into territorial and urban development strategies. The research provides evidence on how spatial elements influence people’s perception and well-being, highlighting the fundamental role of Geography in studying the interaction between individuals and their built environment

    José Domínguez Abascal, Pepón: A personal review

    José Domínguez, better known as Pepón, was a distinguished figure in the world of Boundary Elements due to his significant contributions. Beginning with formulations for elastostatic problems and subsequently extending to elastodynamics, he fundamentally advanced the fields of fracture mechanics, seismic analysis, and soil–structure interaction. This article, authored by former Ph.D. students from his Boundary Element community, aims to pay homage to the invaluable contributions Pepón made to the development of the Boundary Element Method. However, this paper also seeks to highlight his equally valuable efforts in other areas where he dedicated his time in parallel to his scientific career. These include university management roles, political positions, and entrepreneurial ventures. Undoubtedly, his widespread appreciation stemmed not only from his exceptional work ethic and prodigious mind but also from a character and personality that enabled him to cultivate friendships and earn the personal admiration and affection of all who had the privilege to work with him

    Assessing the effects of compound events of temperature and air pollution on weekly mortality in Spain using random forests

    Numerous studies have shown the link between extreme weather events and mortality. Specifically, the impacts of extreme temperatures on death rates have been extensively evaluated and documented. Likewise, exposure to air pollution is well known to adversely affect health, with extreme pollution episodes also being related to elevated mortality rates. Hence, it is reasonable to expect that the combination of these phenomena could result in elevated mortality episodes. In this study, we demonstrate that the temporal variability of mortality rates across several Spanish provinces can be effectively explained by a multivariate model that incorporates both meteorological factors and air quality. While a Random Forest analysis shows that temperature is the primary factor in most provinces, the inclusion of pollutant concentration significantly enhances the model’s predictive accuracy. Moreover, a seasonal analysis of extreme events reveals a strong relationship between high mortality episodes and the occurrence of compound events. These events encompass different variables depending on the season. During summer (June–August), situations characterized by extreme temperatures combined with elevated ozone levels result in marked mortality peaks within the same week. In winter (December–February), conditions involving very low temperatures along with high nitrogen dioxide concentrations are associated with extreme mortality rates (above the 90th percentile) during the following week in half of the cases considered.     Peripheral Transformations of Reindustrialization Expansion in Granada’s Second Periphery: The Case of the Temple Subregion

    This contribution is the result of the R+D+I project REINLOES Reindustrialización poscrisis y nueva lógica espacial de la producción, ref. PID2023-146628NB-I00, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Government of Spain. 2023 Call.The growth of the urban agglomeration of Granada has been accompanied by a centrifugal displacement of activities considered undesirable—such as logistics, industrial uses, waste management, or energy production—towards rural areas. As an illustration of this process, this research focuses on the analysis of the Temple region, a territory located southwest of the Granada urban agglomeration, which has undergone a significant transformation in land use since the late 20th century. Traditionally agrarian, this area has come to host facilities associated with reindustrialization, such as technology parks, solar plants, and other infrastructures linked to metropolitan processes. The main objective is to understand how and why this territorial mutation has occurred and its landscape implications. To this end, a mixed methodology has been developed, structured in two simultaneous phases. First, a review of specialized literature, urban planning documents, and techniques of photointerpretation and remote sensing has been carried out. Secondly, this has been complemented by semi-structured interviews with key territorial actors. Preliminary results point to increasing pressure on rural space to accommodate metropolitan functions that cannot be in the central area of the urban agglomeration. It is concluded that the Temple has become a functional "second periphery" of Granada. This case raises relevant questions about territorial governance, the redistribution of impacts, and the limits of diffuse urban growth.Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Government of Spain PID2023-146628NB-I0

    Tracker Nanocatalyst for Screening of Intracellular Copper-Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloadditions

    Intracellular copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) offers immense potential for bioorthogonal chemistry, but its application is severely hindered by copper toxicity and the challenge of controlling catalysis within the complex cellular environment. Heterogeneous copper catalysts can reduce toxicity by minimizing free copper exposure and enabling localized activity, yet optimizing their performance in situ within living cells remains a significant hurdle. Here, the development of a novel dual-functional nanocatalyst, Cu@BTTAA-Cy5-NPs, that combines robust heterogeneous CuAAC catalytic activity with intrinsic fluorescence tracking is reported. The successful synthesis and characterization of these monodispersed nanoparticles is demonstrated, confirming efficient copper loading stabilized by BTTAA and the nanoparticle matrix, and critically, the retention of Cy5 fluorescence for tracking. This unique dual functionality allows for real-time monitoring of nanoparticle localization and correlation with catalytic product formation via distinct fluorescence channels, enabling, for the first time to our knowledge, comprehensive in situ screening and optimization of CuAAC reaction conditions directly within living cells using fluorescence feedback. The nanoparticles exhibit excellent biocompatibility and cellular uptake, showing no significant toxicity, apoptosis, or oxidative stress at active concentrations.European Union Next Generation EU/PRTR.     Engineering PVA-CNF-MOF Composite Films for Active Packaging: Enhancing Mechanical Strength, Barrier Performance, and Stability for Fresh Produce Preservation

    Food waste is a global challenge, with nearly 40% of food discarded annually, leading to economic losses, food insecurity, and environmental harm. Major factors driving spoilage include microbial contamination, enzymatic activity, oxidation, and excessive ethylene production. Active packaging offers a promising solution by extending shelf life through the selective absorption or release of specific substances. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films incorporating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared via solvent casting to enhance their mechanical and barrier properties. Five MOFs (HKUST-1, MIL-88A, BASFA520, UiO-66, and MOF-801) were embedded in the PVA matrix and analyzed for their physical, mechanical, and optical characteristics. The incorporation of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNF) improved MOF dispersion, significantly strengthening film performance. Among the formulations, PVA-CNF-MOF-801 exhibited the best performance, with a 130% increase in tensile strength, a 50% reduction in water vapor permeability, and a 168% improvement in UV protection compared with neat PVA films. Ethylene adsorption tests with climacteric fruits confirmed that CNF-containing films retained ethylene more effectively than those without CNFs, although the differences among the MOFs were minimal.
