The effects of kangaroo care on delirium management in neonates under non-invasive mechanical ventilation: A randomized control trial

    No full text
Background & Aims: Little is known about managing delirium in neonates admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The current study investigated whether kangaroo mother care can affect neonates' delirium under non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Materials & Methods: In this randomized control trial, a total of 50 term neonates who were under non-invasive mechanical ventilation were allocated to intervention and control groups (n=25 in each group) using block randomization. Utilizing “Cornell Assessment of Pediatric Delirium”, and “ACoRN respiratory sequence protocol”, the data were gathered at baseline, 24, 48, and 72 hours after. The intervention group received 30 minutes of kangaroo mother care daily. Results: There was a statistical delirium mean scores difference between the two groups on day 2 (p < 0.045) but not on other days. Repeated measures modeling (linear mixed models and generalized linear mixed models) indicated significant differences in change curves for both Cornell Assessment of Pediatric Delirium scores and the incidence of delirium. Conclusion: Implementing kangaroo mother care for a 30-minute duration each day for neonates under non-invasive mechanical ventilation may markedly decrease delirium occurrence

Challenges of projectification in an engineering school: Lessons learned and room for improving the whole performance of the institution

The management model in higher education institutions is in continuous change: from an initial hierarchical and functional organization, the subsequent influence of the New Public Management model and more recently project-based management, conditioned among other causes by how a large part of the financing of universities (programs and projects) is being articulated. This management model affects all the activities carried out by universities, particularly teaching and research, as well as the way staff must perform their functions. Like all models, project-oriented management has its opportunities and challenges. This paper examines the implications of project-based learning in the university environment. To explore this topic, the authors conducted a case study involving an engineering school in the Middle East and developed semi-structured interviews. This approach allowed the examination of how academic professionals perceive the increasing trend of projectification across six areas: Teaching and Curriculum, Research and Funding, Doctoral Studies, Administration and Governance, Academic Professional Development, and the overall University Culture. The results reveal that, although projectification benefits the institution in general, it is accompanied by a series of negative implications that affect both individuals and the management. The complexity and the different missions and values of universities highlight the need for a nuanced approach to project management to optimize management without jeopardizing academic excellence, especially in the field of teaching and research. Academic staff is not exempt from the need for permanent training, and it is necessary to incorporate project management and its principles to capacity-building programs to ensure their best performance.Universidad de Granad

    No full text
Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media platforms have been a venue for the exchange of messages, including those related to fake news. There are also accounts programmed to disseminate and amplify specific messages, which can affect individual decision-making and present new challenges for public health. Objective: This study aimed to analyze how social bots use hashtags compared to human users on topics related to misinformation during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We selected posts on specific topics related to infodemics such as vaccines, hydroxychloroquine, military, conspiracy, laboratory, Bill Gates, 5G, and UV. We built a network based on the co-occurrence of hashtags and classified the posts based on their source. Using network analysis and community detection algorithms, we identified hashtags that tend to appear together in messages. For each topic, we extracted the most relevant subtopic communities, which are groups of interconnected hashtags. Results: The distribution of bots and nonbots in each of these communities was uneven, with some sets of hashtags being more common among accounts classified as bots or nonbots. Hashtags related to the Trump and QAnon social movements were common among bots, and specific hashtags with anti-Asian sentiments were also identified. In the subcommunities most populated by bots in the case of vaccines, the group of hashtags including #billgates, #pandemic, and #china was among the most common. Conclusions: The use of certain hashtags varies depending on the source, and some hashtags are used for different purposes. Understanding these patterns may help address the spread of health misinformation on social media networks

This work was supported by a research project “Violence against women: Implications for their psychosocial wellbeing” (grant) PID2021-123125OB-100 financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by ERDF, EU.Objective: Exposing women to intimate partner violence (IPV) poses a risk to their physical and mental health, necessitating that they leave the relationship. However, women face various obstacles in doing so, such as cognitive distortions that affect their interpretation of the reality of violence, trapping them and significantly influencing their decision to leave. This scoping review explores, synthesizes, and analyzes the available evidence on the relationship between cognitive distortions and decision-making among women involved in IPV. Method: A systematic search was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines, utilizing the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases. A total of 12 studies (five qualitative, four quantitative, and three mixed methodology) were included according to the inclusion criteria. Results: Self-blame, low attribution of responsibility to the aggressor, minimization of violence or damage, normalization of IPV, denial/loss of self, denial injury, control perceived, hope of change, savior beliefs, “should” belief in the relationship, focus on positive aspects of the relationship or aggressor, and denial other emotional options besides the partner were the main cognitive distortions found in women victims of IPV and related to maintaining IPV. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing cognitive distortions in women, which is crucial in preventing them from becoming trapped in violent relationships. Future research should continue to investigate the role of cognitive distortions in women’s decision-making regarding IPV, as well as the consequences of leaving the aggressor for them.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness PID2021-123125OB-100MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033ERDF, E

Funding was provided by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) and co-funding by the European Union (PI18/01840, PI23/01646). The Spanish Ministry of Education Culture and Sport (MECD) (FPU17/00939, FPU18/03575), the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (FI19/00230), and the University of Granada’s “Excellence Actions” (Units of Excellence-Unit of Excellence on Exercise and Health) also contributed to funding. Background: After breast cancer (BC), women may face other severe symptoms such as sleep problems. The use of simple, fast, and reliable scales is necessary in the clinic to improve patient benefits, and sleep is an important aspect to be addressed. Objective: This study was conducted to adapt and validate the Spanish version of the satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration (SATED) scale for measuring sleep health in women who have completed treatment for BC in Spain (SATED-BC). Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The adaptation process involved adding a sixth item to the SATED-BC scale: “the impact of symptoms experienced after completing breast cancer treatment on sleep” item was not considered for scoring. The SATED-BC score ranged from 0 (poorest sleep health) to 10 (best sleep health). A validation analysis was performed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Consensus Sleep Diary, and actigraphy, and the results were compared with those obtained using the SATED-BC scale. Results: The SATED-BC scale was reliable in terms of its internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.70; McDonald’s ω = 0.72), showed high intrasubject reliability (r = 0.90), and was shown to be valid for use in women who have completed treatment for breast cancer. Conclusion: The SATED-BC scale is a reliable and valid tool for comprehensively evaluating sleep health in women who have completed treatment for breast cancer.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (FI19/00230)European Union (PI18/01840, PI23/01646)Spanish Ministry of Education Culture and Sport (MECD) (FPU17/00939, FPU18/03575)University of Granad

Palabras clave: Análisis de Redes Sociales – Red de palabras-clave – Detección de comunidades – Descomposición K-core - Altmetría. In Social Network Analysis (SNA), k-core decomposition is used to detect hierarchical shells in networks. The application of the K-core decomposition to a network of keywords allows us to represent the conceptual structure of a research field. The objective of this work was to propose the application of k-core decomposition to show the evolution of the conceptual structure of the Altmetrics research field. The methodology was developed in several phases: data collection, keyword selection, elaboration of a keyword co-occurrence matrix, generation of a keyword network, k-core decomposition and visualization of the hierarchical structure. The result was the detection of five differentiated shells. A core shell with basic, densely interconnected concepts that formed the knowledge base of the field. An intermediate shell with mediating concepts that showed the evolution of knowledge in the field. A lateral shell with concepts that indicated the specialization of the research field. A border shell with peripheral and isolated concepts, which represented the conceptual fronts in development. In conclusion, the hierarchical decomposition of the keyword network achieved a deeper understanding of the conceptual structure of the research field

A large number of empirical studies has been done on diverse psycho-emotional variables related to second/foreign language (L2) education in different educational settings. However, the literature is limited chiefly to learner-psychology variables, with attention turning to teacher psychology only recently. Three crucial constructs related to L2 teachers are grit, positive psychological capital, and emotional literacy. However, the interaction between these three has received scarce (if any) attention so far. To fill this gap, this quantitative study delved into the predicting role of teachers’ grit and positive psychological capital in their emotional literacy. To this end, the 560 EFL teachers who participated in this study completed three scales over four months. Structural equation modelling (SEM) and regression analysis revealed a positive association among EFL teachers’ grit, positive psychological capital, and emotional literacy. Moreover, the regression analysis results pinpointed that both grit and positive psychological capital could significantly predict EFL teachers’ emotional literacy. More specifically, it was found that grit and positive psychological capital could jointly predict 67% of the variance in emotional literacy. The study provides implications for EFL teachers, researchers, school managers, and teacher educators regarding the prominence of emotional factors in language teaching.

The perfect storm: when COPD meets bronchiectasis

COPD and bronchiectasis (BE) are two major respiratory conditions characterised by the presence of chronic respiratory symptoms and an increased risk for future events and disability. In ERJ Open Research, CHEN et al. [ERJ Open Res 2025; 11: 00626-2024] apply the ROSE criteria to explore the prevalence and clinical impact of the COPD-BE association in two East Asian cohorts, shedding new light on a population that has been underrepresented in previous research. The study stands out for its comprehensive approach, combining a prospective and a large multicentre retrospective cohort, allowing for a robust validation of the ROSE criteria in this specific demographic. One of the key findings of the study is the high prevalence of the COPD-BE overlap, identified in 16.5% of the participants, with higher rates in the prospective cohort. These patients were predominantly older males with more severe respiratory symptoms, worse lung function and a greater reliance on inhalation therapies. Most notably, this group exhibited a significantly increased risk of exacerbations and hospitalisations compared to those with bronchiectasis alone or those without fixed airflow limitation. This reinforces the value of the ROSE criteria not only in identifying this overlap but also in stratifying patients based on their risk of poor clinical outcome
