    No full text
Novel lipophilic hydroxytyrosol N-alkylcarbamate conjugates were synthesized by coupling several alkyl isocyanates of different chain lengths with the primary hydroxy group of this natural phenol. These N-alkylcarbamate conjugates were tested as antitrypanosomal and antileishmanial agents, and their cytotoxicity was evaluated against the human MRC-5 and THP-1 cell lines. Five of these N-alkylcarbamate derivatives showed submicromolar IC50 concentrations against Trypanosoma brucei brucei, with values ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 μM, and three other hydroxytyrosol conjugates showed IC50 values below 5 μM. Data for the five most active Nalkylcarbamate derivatives indicate a gain in activity relative to hydroxytyrosol of between 115- and 460-fold, and selectivity indices for control/human MRC-5 cells relative to T. b. brucei parasites of between 47- and 140- fold. These N-alkylcarbamate derivatives were also tested against the intracellular amastigote form of Leishmania donovani in infected THP-1 macrophages, where five compounds had IC50 values less than or equal to 10 μM, with selectivity indices relative to L. donovani of between 3- and 25-fold in MRC-5 cells and between 8- and 60- fold in THP-1 cells. In all of these derivatives, the ortho-diphenolic groups were free.

Uterus didelphys: the first case report on molecular profiling of endometrial tissue from both uterine cavities

    No full text
Background A didelphic uterus represents a unique and infrequent congenital condition in which a woman possesses two distinct uteri, each with its own cervix. This anomaly arises due to partial or incomplete merging of the Müllerian ducts during the developmental stages in the womb. Accounting for uterine malformations, a didelphic uterus is a relatively rare condition, affecting approximately 0.5–2% of the population and is considered one of the more uncommon types of uterine abnormalities. Methods This case report aims to study the physical separation in uterine didelphys and its impact on endometrial microbiome and inflammation, and the patterns of endometrial receptivity observed. Results Endometrial receptivity analyses revealed a similar receptive state in both uteri, both in the early receptive phase. Differential markers of chronic endometritis, including CD138, and MUM1-positive cells, were observed when comparing endometrial biopsies from both uteri. The right uterus exhibited a higher prevalence of these positive cells. Regarding the microbiome, significant differences were found between the uteri, notably in the right uterus, a clear non-dominance of lactobacilli and the presence of genera such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Acinetobacter. Additionally, the right uterus presented a less ‘favourable’ microenvironment, a characteristic that was also reflected in the right cervix; both sites presenting less lactobacilli than the left side samples. A distinct metabolomic signature associated with the physical separation of the uteri contributed to the differences in endometrial milieu. Conclusions Our study revealed that physical separation, among other factors in uterus didelphys, affects the endometrial microbiome, metabolome, and inflammatory state, with significant microbiome variation observed between the uteri, although similar endometrial receptivity patterns were noted.Projects Endo-Map PID2021-12728OB-I00, ROSY CNS2022-135999 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by FEDER, EU, and Enterprise Estonia (grant EU48695 and project RE.5.02.22–019 ReadUteru)Becas Fundación Ramón Areces para Estudios Postdoctorales – Convocatorias XXXV and XXXVI, respectively, para Ampliación de Estudios en el Extranjero en Ciencias de la Vida y de la MateriaPlan de Recuperación, Transformación y resiliencia, Ayudas para la recualificación del sistema universitario español, Ayudas Margarita Salas para la formación de jóvenes doctores – Universidad de MurciaHorizon Europe (NESTOR, grant no. 101120075) of the European Commission and the Estonian Research Council (grant no. Masculinity in Caregiving: Impact on Quality of Life and Self-Stigma in Caregivers of People with Multiple Sclerosis

    No full text
Background/Objectives: This study aims to examine the impact of the caregiving role on quality of life, perceived burden, gender dissonance, and self-stigma among male caregivers of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Andalusia, Spain. Methods: A total of 44 male caregivers participated, completing questionnaires on sociodemographic and functional characteristics of the persons with MS (PwMS) they cared for. Measures included the Caregiving Tasks in Multiple Sclerosis Scale (CTiMSS), the Zarit Burden In- terview (ZBI), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), gender perception, and self-stigma. Data analysis employed ANOVA and regression analyses to assess the relationship between perceived burden and quality of life. Results: Male caregivers experienced significant burden, particularly in instrumental and social–practical caregiving tasks, with a mean score of 23.9 on the ZBI. Perceived burden was inversely related to quality of life, notably impacting physical and psychological health. Sixteen percent of caregivers reported cogni- tive self-stigma, though without affective or behavioral manifestations. Gender dissonance was observed, as men often perceived certain caregiving tasks as feminine; however, many integrated this role within their masculine identity. Conclusions: Male caregivers of PwMS face the dual burden of caregiving demands and traditional gender expectations. While gender dissonance and low levels of self-stigma were observed, most caregivers adapted by integrating caregiving into their identity. These findings highlight the need for tailored interventions to address their unique challenges and enhance their well-being.SEJ 208: Estudios Socioculturales Aplicado

    No full text
To boost students’ motivation, educators have a noteworthy impact on this progress, and various aspects associated with teachers such as their traits and beliefs in their abilities. For a long time, it has been broadly acknowledged that self-efficacy is an essential element of motivation that impacts how students engage with their studies. Also, another element is the credibility of the teacher, which pertains to how much the students believe in the teacher. As a result, this study was carried out to inspect the impact of EFL teachers’ self-efficacy and credibility on learners’ motivation. Accordingly, 316 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners participated in the research. Three scales were given to the students and the gathered information was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings indicated that both teachers’ credibility and self-efficacy have been proven to impact learners’ motivation in the EFL educational field. 68% of changes in the EFL students’ motivation can be predicted by their teachers’ credibility, and about 71% of changes in the EFL learners’ motivation can be predicted by their teachers’ self-efficacy. The outcomes of the study and their implications for teaching stakeholders were presented to consider teacher-related factors, namely teachers’ credibility and self-efficacy in boosting learners’ motivation, and finally, suggestions for future studies were also provided.
