Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Granada/CBUA .Supporting users in their food choices for mindful eating has become one of the spotlights for investigating modern food systems. However, building integral food platforms for this purpose is challenging due to dealing with heterogeneous data sources of different scopes, such as recipe data, food data, and user and dietary specificities. This research paper presents a versatile multi-platform architecture based on micro-services for dealing with different food-related tasks. The contributions of this research are manifold: (1) Firstly, we propose an architecture that enables us to handle various food-related tasks while managing various food data sources, providing data standardisation, scalability, and security benefits; (2) We introduce a novel recipe adaptation algorithm based on intelligent search in external resources and intelligent adaptation of the recipe preparation; (3) We include AI2Cuisine, a mobile application for recipe adaptation to meet different requirements like preferences, health and sustainable goals; (4) Finally, we perform an analysis and discussion in term of the necessity and impact of such sort of applications on the population. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal, we have conducted an experimental evaluation, and the results have been validated for various end-users with different expertise.MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 PID2021-12396 0OB-I00ERDF /EUJunta de Andalucía PREDOC_00 298Universidad de Granada/CBU

Beyond the «Like» button: Gender Differences in Motivations and Impact of Facebook Usage

    No full text
Previous literature analysing gender differences in habits and motivations for using Facebook, as well as in the degree of emotional connectivity to the platform, is inconclusive. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the role of likes received on Facebook posts in people’s well-being based on gender. This research was aimed at addressing this gap in the literature. Participants (N = 156 college students) randomly completed an essay in which the number of likes received on a Facebook post (few vs. many likes) was manipulated and then responded to dependent measures. The results showed that women (vs. men) spent more time on Facebook daily, which was associated with increased use of the platform for entertainment and, consequently, with higher emotional connectivity to it. Moreover, men who received many likes on a Facebook post exhibited higher self-esteem compared to those who received few likes; however, this effect was not found among women. This research highlights the need to continue investigating the motivational factors that determine Facebook usage, as well as the associated benefits and risks.

Many studies have delved into different aspects of bilingual education examining perceptions within the educational community. However, none of them have explored the impact of offering bilingual programmes on a voluntary versus a mandatory basis on students’ attitudes and perceptions. The aim of the present work was to investigate Spanish bilingual secondary school students’ attitudes, motivation, perceived learning, anxiety, and satisfaction with bilingual education, establishing a comparison between schools where students can only join the bilingual strand and schools where students can choose whether to join the bilingual strand or the non-bilingual one. An ex post facto research design was used, involving 261 high school students. Descriptive, mean differences, and decision tree analyses were conducted. The results reveal better attitudes and perceptions in students from schools where bilingual education is not compulsory for all. Our findings may be of interest when planning this type of approach to education.

Effects of intermittent versus continuous small-sided games on athletic performance in male youth soccer players: a pilot study

Adjusting the design of small-sided games and selecting the appropriate format can significantly enhance training outcomes and player development in soccer. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of intermittent small-sided games (ISSG) and continuous small-sided games (CSSG) on athletic performance metrics in male soccer players. This pilot study was conducted using a parallel group pre-test and post-test design, with 16 male youth soccer players randomly assigned to two groups: the ISSG group (n = 8, Mean age = 16.50 ± 0.53 years) and the CSSG group (n = 8, Mean age = 16.63 ± 0.52 years), ensuring a balance in pre-test performance and playing positions. The ISSG protocol began with 4 min sets in week one, progressively increasing to 7 min by week four, with 2 min rest intervals. The CSSG protocol involved continuous play, starting at 16 min and progressing to 28 min over the same period. Players underwent pre- and post-tests, with a 4-week training period. Performance metrics assessed included body composition, a 30 m sprint test, agility, horizontal jump, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, and static balance. Training intensity was monitored using the CR-10 Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion scale throughout the training period. Both groups exhibited improvements in horizontal jump, agility, aerobic and anaerobic power, and static balance, with no significant between-group differences. Sprint performance did not significantly improve in either group. The CSSG group reported higher RPE values and experienced a reduction in body mass index. Our findings demonstrate that both ISSG and CSSG resulted in similar improvements in athletic performance metrics in male youth soccer players. Coaches and practitioners can choose the most appropriate training method based on specific objectives, session duration, and player fatigue levels, thereby optimizing training outcomes

Development of an accelerometer age- and sex-specific approach based on population-standardized values for physical activity surveillance: A proof of concept

This research was supported in part by the intramural research programs at the National Institute on Aging and National Cancer Institute (USA). JHM is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under Beatriz Galindo's 2022 fellowship program (BG22/00075).Supplementary materials associated with this article can be found in the online version at doi:10.1016/j.jshs.2024.100995Background A shift from self-reports to wearable sensors for global physical activity (PA) surveillance has been recommended. The conventional use of a generic cut-point to assess moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) is problematic as these cut-points are often derived from non-representative samples under non-ecological laboratory conditions. This study aimed to develop age- and sex- (age-sex) specific cut-points for MVPA based on population-standardized values as a feasible approach to assess the adherence to PA guidelines and to investigate its associations with all-cause mortality. Methods A total of 7601 participants (20–85+ years) were drawn from the 2003–2004 and 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Minutes per week of MVPA were assessed with a hip-worn accelerometer. Counts per minute (CPM) were used to define an age-sex specific target intensity, representing the intensity each person should be able to reach based on their age and sex. Age-sex specific MVPA cut-points were defined as any activity above 40% of the target intensity. These population- and free-living-based age-sex specific cut-points overcome many of the limitations of the standard generic cut-point approach. For comparison, we also calculated MVPA with a generic cut-point of 1952 CPM. Both approaches were compared for assessing adherence to PA guidelines and association of MVPA with all-cause mortality (ascertained through December 2015). Results Both approaches indicated that 37% of the sample met the 150+ min/week guideline. The generic cut-point approach showed a trend to inactivity with age, which was less pronounced using the age-sex specific cut-points. Overall mortality rates were comparable using generic cut-point (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.61, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.50‒0.73) or age-sex specific cut-points (HR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.50‒0.66) for the entire sample. The generic cut-point method revealed an age- and sex-related gap in the benefits of achieving 150+ min/week of MVPA, with older adults showing an 18% greater reduction in mortality rates than younger adults, and a larger difference in women than in men. This disparity disappeared when using age-sex specific cut-points. Conclusion Our findings underscore the value of age-sex specific cut-points for global PA surveillance. MVPA defined with age-sex specific thresholds was associated with all-cause mortality and the dose‒response was similar for all ages and sexes. This aligns with the single recommendation of accumulating 150+ min/week MVPA for all adults, irrespective of age and sex. This study serves as a proof of concept to develop this methodology for PA surveillance over more advanced open-source acceleration metrics and other national and international cohorts.National Institute on Aging (USA)National Cancer Institute (USA)Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (BG22/00075

    No full text
