Anorganic Bovine Bone vs. Biphasic Calcium Phosphate in a Large Series of Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevations—A Non-Randomized Clinico-Morphological Study
Background: To compare the histological and histomorphometrical outcomes after sinus
floor elevation using an anorganic bovine bone biomaterial or a biphasic calcium phosphate
biomaterial. Material and Methods: Patients who needed maxillary sinus elevation were
included in this study. A total of 68 implant sites were evaluated from a total of 42 patients.
Twenty patients were treated with anorganic bovine bone, while 22 were treated with
biphasic calcium phosphate biomaterial. Morphological and morphometrical studies
were performed on the bone samples collected during implant placement. Results: Both
biomaterials induced similar relative areas of mineralized tissue overall, particularly if only
the area of grafted bone was considered. In turn, a higher proportion of non-mineralized
tissue was observed in cases of biphasic calcium phosphate biomaterial with less area
of remnant biomaterial particles. None of the implants failed at one year of follow-up.
Conclusions: Although both biomaterials induce a similar amount of bone formation, the
histopathological characteristics of the grafts are different, with a greater proportion of scar
connective tissue with the biphasic calcium phosphate biomaterial.Junta de Andalucía (#CTS-138 and #CTS-1028
Enhancement of the Chiroptical Properties of o‑OPE through Arene−Perfluoroarene Interactions
In this work, we synthesized and studied fluorinated o-oligophenylene
ethynylenes (o-OPEs). Arene−perfluoroarene interactions promote the folding of the
extremes of the OPE stabilizing folded conformations and extending the helical
conformation to two complete turns, thus improving their chiroptical responses
compared to the nonfluorinated analogue. Dissymmetry factors gabs and glum reached
values of ∼3 × 10−2 on the perfluorinated compound, which represents a 3-fold increase
compared to that of the nonfluorinated analogue and is an exceptional value for a small
organic molecule.MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF, EU (Projects PID2023-146801NB-C31 and PID2021-127964NB-C22)MCIN/AIE/10.13039/501100011033 (FPU contracts FPU16/02597 and FPU19/03751)Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) (Project SMART HELIX, prot.
In the Chinese university context, a deficiency in teaching Spanish as a foreign
language (SFL) has been identified, characterized by an excessive emphasis on students’ linguistic competence, which leads to insufficient preparation in communicative and
intercultural competences upon graduation. This study evaluates a teaching plan based
on the films of Pedro Almodóvar to strengthen these competences in Chinese-speaking
university students. Through a mixed-method approach, changes in communicative and
intercultural skills are examined before and after the implementation of the plan, using
standardized SIELE S5 modality tests and group discussion analysis. The quantitative
analysis was performed with SPSS version 27.0.1.0, while the qualitative analysis was
carried out through theoretically grounded categories, which were properly adjusted to
suit our specific needs. The results indicate that, although students positively valued the
teaching method and improved in their communicative competence, a minority did not
achieve progress in intercultural competence, mainly due to factors such as insufficient
group support and interaction, late interventions by the teacher, frequent reliance on
Chinese, and variable interest and adaptability towards the sociocultural topics
addressed. This study contributes to the understanding of Chinese-speaking students’
responses to teaching methods that integrate film, communication and interculturality,
offering valuable didactic experiences for future research in this field.Tesis Univ. Granada
A guide to the analysis of didactic suitability of probability textbook lessons
The aim of this article is to buid a Guide to the Analysis of Probability Textbook Lessons for secondary education
(students aged 12-14), using the framework of Didactic Suitability. The facets, components and indicators of the
didactic suitability construct are applied to categorize and organize didactic-mathematical knowledge on
teaching and learning of probability in secondary education derived from research on the subject. The guide
constitutes a systemic structure of descriptors (gradable and recognizable features in the textbook lesson)
associated with the different components of partial suitability, which can facilitate the teacher's decision-making
on how to use a textbook lesson in the classroom to optimise the instructional process.MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 - ERDF/EU (PID2022-139748NB-I00)Junta de Andalucía (Research Group FQM-126)Government of Aragón (Group S60_23R
Whole genome DNA methylation profles defne Meniere’s disease subclusters
Meniere disease (MD) is a cochleo-vestibular syndrome defned by episodes of vertigo associated with tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss. While MD immune response has been linked to autoinfammation and type 2 cytokines, other molecular
mechanisms such as DNA methylation have an emerging yet underexplored role in MD pathophysiology. To understand the
role of DNA methylation in MD, we performed whole-genome bisulphite sequencing in MD patients (n=40) and controls
(n=13) and used diferentially methylated cytosines (DMCs) to defne clusters, cell types, and biochemical pathways in MD.
We found three MD subclusters: Cluster 1 (40% of patients) and Cluster 3 (25%) showed DMC profles against controls,
while Cluster 2 (35%) did not. Signifcant DMCs from Cluster 1 and Cluster 3 versus Control analysis were annotated to
3033 and 59 unique genes, respectively. Each cluster showed a diferent gene enrichment; however, the KDMB4 gene had
signifcant upregulated DNA accessibility in a complementary ATAC-seq dataset and showed signifcant DMCs in both
Cluster 1 and Cluster 3. DNA methylation patterns in MD reveal three clusters which are refective of an underlying diference in pathways related to cytokine stimulus, immunity T-cell, and NK-cell pathways. KDMB4 emerges as a critical MD
gene which deserves further research.Andalusian Health Department (EPIVERT) - (PI027-2020)University of

3D modeling and visualization of geological structures with python-implemented B´ezier curves/surfaces
Interactive 3D HTML models and visualizations of geological structures derived from classic surface geological
information have been developed, for the first time, in a Python environment, using the key case of the tectonic
Mula sheets in the Betic Cordillera (southern Spain). These models were performed through several steps: a
geological 2D sketch map, creating equispaced geological cross-sections, 3D topography, a complete 3D model,
and detailed 3D block diagrams. The result of the extrapolation of the equispaced geological cross-sections and
their integration with the geological map into a 3D geological model shows the thrust-faulted and contractionally
folded structure of the entire area, which affects the Cretaceous to Lower Miocene succession. The faults (strikeslip and normal) present in the tectonic thrust sheets are also represented. Three detailed 3D HTML blocks of
illustrative regions within the modeled area were also created. For the 3D modeling, B´ezier curves/surfaces as
well as linear interpolation were used, as geological (stratigraphic and tectonic) contacts and surfaces between
different stratigraphic units can be expressed geometrically with these tools. Compared to commercial alternatives, our software offers three key advantages: free user-friendly solutions, browser-compatible 3D models, and
open-source software. The 3D visualization of stratigraphic-structural architecture enables predictive interpretations with applications in environmental and economic geology (e.g., groundwater, geotechnical studies,
mining research, etc.). Moreover, 3D visualization and modeling provide valuable insights into geological
phenomena, benefiting both the scientific community and society at large. Furthermore, advances in interactive
3D visualization bridge the gap between cutting-edge geological research and public understanding, enhancing
social awareness.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2020-114381GB-I00
Animalising the Islamic Green Revolution: zooarchaeology and socio-ecological change in the Islamic Far West
The impact of the medieval Arab expansion on agriculture in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean was defined by Andrew M. Watson, 1974, Watson, 1983 as an “agricultural revolution,” although both the use of the term and the nature of this impact have been the subject of considerable debate. Archaeological research into this phenomenon has focused primarily on specific issues—such as the archaeobotanical identification of crop dispersals or the analysis of irrigation systems—while devoting far less attention to the role of animal husbandry in this process of historical and agrarian transformation. This paper pursues a twofold objective. First, drawing on ethnographic and agroecological data on the traditional functioning of pre-mechanised agrarian systems, it offers a reappraisal of the Islamic Green Revolution model that challenges one of its central postulates: the alleged structural disassociation between irrigated agriculture and livestock husbandry. Second, it presents a preliminary, macro-scale and essentially qualitative cross-cutting analysis of a set of zooarchaeological results—focusing primarily on evidence from al-Andalus—which are shedding new light on changes in the management and exploitation of animals as part of the processes of agrarian change associated with the medieval Arab expansion
Generation and phenotypic characterization of a sigma-1 receptor knockout rat
The sigma-1 receptor (σ1R) is a chaperone involved in multiple physiological and pathological processes,
including pain modulation, neuroprotection, and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite its functional significance,
its precise roles remain unclear due to the lack of suitable models for detailed mechanistic studies. In this work,
we describe the generation and phenotypic characterization of a novel σ1R knockout (σ1R KO) rat model. Using
CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we introduced a specific 218-base-pair deletion into the σ1R gene, resulting in a
complete loss of receptor expression, as confirmed by Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and binding assays.
Comprehensive phenotypic analyses revealed no major developmental or behavioral abnormalities in σ1R KO
rats under baseline conditions, suggesting that σ1R is not essential for development or survival. Additionally, no
genotype-related differences were observed in cellular or biochemical blood parameters. Motor function tests
(rotarod, grip strength, and wheel running) showed no deficits; however, σ1R KO rats displayed reduced
exploratory behavior in actimetry and markedly diminished burrowing behavior. By contrast, no
anxiodepressive-like behaviors were observed in the open field, startle, or forced swim tests. Sensory testing of
naive rats revealed no significant genotype-related differences in responses to mechanical, heat, or cold stimuli,
or in the formalin test (chemical-induced pain). However, σ1R KO rats displayed attenuated neuropathic pain
after traumatic nerve injury (spared nerve injury), highlighting the role of σ1R in pain sensitization pathways.
This study establishes the σ1R KO rat as a valuable tool for investigating σ1R-mediated mechanisms and for
developing therapeutic strategies targeting σ1R for chronic pain, neurodegeneration, and psychiatric disorders.MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 (PID2021-123058NA-I00)FEDER/UE (P20_00132, B-CTS-642-UGR20)Andalusian Regional Government (grant CTS-109)Spanish Ministry of Universities (FPU21/02736)MCIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and European Union Next Generation EU/PRTR (Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación IJC2020-046118-I)University of Granada (Unit of Excellence ‘UNETE’, UCE-PP2017-05)COST, European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST Action SIGMA-1EUROPE, CA23156
Harmonized aerosol size distribution, cloud condensation nuclei, chemistry and optical properties at 10 sites
A harmonized data set of aerosol particle number size distributions and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations at 10 US Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) sites is presented. Additional complementary data including total particle number concentration, aerosol chemical composition and aerosol optical properties are included where available. Calculated parameters related to particle activation, (e.g., activated fraction, hygroscopicity parameter and critical diameter) are provided. DOE/ARM data are acquired and processed following DOE/ARM protocols which are based on international recommendations. Here, the data have undergone additional stages of quality assessment including various closure tests. This data set may be useful for studying aerosol processes and, with other data, assessing aerosol-cloud- interactions. High-resolution (5-min) data is provided along with 1-h averaged data, making the data set suitable for exploring the importance of new particle formation (NPF) events on CCN concentrations. Further applications include model and satellite evaluation of aerosol size distributions and CCN concentrations, and exploring relationships among different aerosol properties which may be useful for improving model parametrizations.DOE/ASR - (DE-SC0022886
