    No full text
In this work, we present Mulhacen, a 3D multi-subband simulator developed for the accurate study of nonplanar devices which are at the core of present and future technology nodes. It allows to consider electrons in different conduction band valleys and, among its main features, we can highlight the accurate evaluation of quantum effects in the plane transverse to transport through the solution of the 2D Schrödinger equation in several device cross sections, as well as Monte Carlo description of transport. The simulator is based on a finite elements discretization, which allows an accurate description of realistic device geometries.

This study explores the perception of students from the Ceuta and Melilla centers of the University of Granada on violence, experienced and perceived in relationships, as well as to determine the differences, if any, among the students of the Undergraduate Degree in Primary Education (PE) and in Early Childhood Education (ECE) of these two university centers. The method used was the survey technique of a probability sample composed of 213 subjects. As a data collection tool, the violence in young couple relationships questionnaire (VIREPA), by González-Gijón and Soriano (2021) was used to determine the different violences experienced by the participants. The results show a low estimation of direct physical violence and sexual abuse, and conversely a high estimation of violence and emotional abuse, personal devaluation, and social and economic control. The findings indicate that students of the Degree in Primary Education (Ceuta) and Early Childhood Education (Melilla) dominate on the scale of direct (psychological), structural and cultural-symbolic violence. The complex panorama of violence in young couples points to an example of hybrid violence, in which all violence coexists, thus reaffirming the need to promote prevention initiatives from the university level.

Evaluation of the landscape’s potential for alternative tourism development in the Pico Azul-La Escalera Environmental Protection Zone, Michoacan, Mexico

The study of tourism in protected natural areas is crucial and has been extensively covered in numerous publications. However, it is rarely examined from the perspective of landscape units. This research seeks to determine the tourism potential of a protected area using landscape units. The evaluation for developing alternative tourism uses anthroponatural landscape units delineated and mapped in the Pico Azul-La Escalera Environmental Protection Zone, Michoacán, Mexico. The natural suitability for tourism activities has been based on indicators such as the degree of naturalness, the anthropization index of vegetation cover, slope inclination, and the presence of main, complementary and supporting tourist attractions, together with traditional economic activities or festivities. By combining natural suitability with analyses of legal compatibility, environmental, socioeconomic, and technicalfinancial viability, we determine the tourism potential of these landscapes. The results show that the landscapes with the highest potential for alternative tourism are located in the north and northeast, featuring well-conserved areas with numerous attractions, better accessibility, and optimal conditions for tourism. Only two landscape units in the center possess high tourism potential due to cultural traditions, despite their low naturalness.Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Consejo Nacional de Humanidades Ciencia y Tecnología de México (CONAHCYT)Ayuda María Zambrano Senior - UGR - Ministerio de Universidades de Españ

This work describes how to avoid region constraints and self-adapt search spaces without renouncing competitive solutions. The proposal relies on defining a gateway function that hides environment-specific placement constraints and is compatible with regular meta-heuristics and simulation-based optimization. The function can show a standard box-constrained domain encapsulating the real places involved. It has been successfully applied to automatic camera placement for task observation in a particle accelerator. The environment and the process of interest are simulated in the Unity game engine, which defines a cutting-edge trend in the design of such facilities. The primary optimization method tested is the genetic algorithm of MATLAB’s Global Optimization Toolbox, an industry standard that achieves remarkable results. The widespread Teaching–Learning-Based Optimizer (TLBO) and a random search have also been tried to complement the study. According to the results, the proposal does not prevent the advanced optimizers from finding camera arrangements that outperform (and are validated by) a human expert. It also allows the random search to find reasonable arrangements despite the underlying intricate set of constraints.DistriMuSe (HORIZON-KDT-JU-2023-2-RIA 101139769PCI2024-153511PID2021-123278OB-I00PID2022-140095NB-I00MICIU/AEI/10.13039/50110001103

The Value of MRI-Based Radiomics in Predicting the Pathological Nodal Status of Rectal Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    No full text
Background: MRI-based radiomics has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the non-invasive, presurgical assessment of lymph node staging in rectal cancer (RC). However, its clinical implementation remains limited due to methodological variability in published studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize the diagnostic performance of MRI-based radiomics models for predicting pathological nodal status (pN) in RC. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies published until 31 December 2024. Eligible studies applied MRI-based radiomics for pN prediction in RC patients. We excluded other imaging sources and models combining radiomics and other data (e.g., clinical). All models with available outcome metrics were included in data analysis. Data extraction and quality assessment (QUADAS-2) were performed independently by two reviewers. Random-effects meta-analyses including hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic (HSROC) and restricted maximum likelihood estimator (REML) analyses were conducted to pool sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve (AUC), and diagnostic odds ratios (DORs). Sensitivity analyses and publication bias evaluation were also performed. Results: Sixteen studies (n = 3157 patients) were included. The HSROC showed pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values of 0.68 (95% CI, 0.63–0.72), 0.73 (95% CI, 0.68–0.78), and 0.70 (95% CI, 0.65–0.75), respectively. The mean pooled AUC and DOR obtained by REML were 0.78 (95% CI, 0.75–0.80) and 6.03 (95% CI, 4.65–7.82). Funnel plot asymmetry and Egger’s test (p = 0.025) indicated potential publication bias. Conclusions: Overall, MRI-based radiomics models demonstrated moderate accuracy in predicting pN status in RC, with some studies reporting outstanding results. However, heterogeneity in relevant methodological approaches such as the source of MRI sequences or machine learning methods applied along with possible publication bias call for further standardization and preclude their translation to clinical practice.

This article deals with the hydraulic systems that made possible the supply of water to Granada and the Alhambra before, during and after the Islamic domination of this territory. With its origins in the Roman Iliberri-Florentia, it was in the following centuries that the complex system of irrigation ditches, canals and hydraulic devices was created, which, from the Zirid dynasty (11th century) and passing through the Almoravids and Almohads (11th-13th century), reached its splendor in the Nasrid dynasty (13th15th century). The irrigation ditches of Aynadamar, Real de la Alhambra, del Cadí and others; the rey Chico aqueduct or the albercón de las Damas among others, were fundamental constructions for the development of Nasrid art and culture, as well as for the construction of the Alhambra. After the Christian conquest, these supply systems were neglected until the beginning of the 20th century, when Torres Balbás began their modern heritage consideration and conservation

Female singer-songwriters resisted the gender roles imposed by Francoism by reclaiming children’s music, a genre appropriated to reinforce its ideology. In the 1970s, Rosa León framed the genre as a vehicle for protest, performing María Elena Walsh’s songs on RTVE. The Argentine poet blurred the boundaries between childhood and adulthood, a strategy also embraced by Julia León and Elisa Serna, who repurposed the label “children’s song” for their artistic and political objectives. Serna, for instance, turned a lullaby into a homage to activist Lola González Ruiz. Other singer-songwriters, such as María Manuela used children’s albums to draw on poets like Rosalía de Castro, advocating, in Galician, a new vision of womanhood. Through these actions, these artists not only subverted a role imposed by the regime and reinforced by the music industry but also traced feminist genealogies and extended protest music to television and celebrity journalism, to children, and their care.Agencia Estatal de Investigación de EspañaHorizon 2020 (UE, GA n.º 101034324)Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades PID2021-125022NB-I00, PID2021-128307OB-I0

The color of natural teeth: A scoping review of In-Vivo studies

    No full text
Objectives: This review aimed to analyze and present information on the color of natural teeth and its distribution based on color measurement methods, types of studies, and research areas. Additionally, it identified knowledge gaps in dental color science and suggested areas for future research. Data: This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) Checklist. Sources: An electronic search was conducted in Medline/Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science - all databases using the keywords: human, tooth, color, color difference, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, spectroradiometer. The review included exclusively English-written research articles published after 1979, focusing on those in-vivo protocols that instrumentally evaluated the color of natural human teeth and provided CIEL*a*b*, CIEL*C*h° color coordinates, and/or shade guide designation. Study selection: The initial database search yielded 2501 results: Medline/Pubmed: n = 482; Scopus: n = 334; and Web of Science All databases: n = 1685. After selection, 53 research articles were included in the review. Conclusion: Dental color is a complex phenomenon to objectively record, communicate, and reproduce. Although studies have reported color coordinates based on age, gender, ethnicity, and tooth type, there is no consensus within the scientific community. Most studies are cross-sectional, limiting the understanding of tooth color changes over time. Longitudinal studies involving diverse cultures with adequate sample sizes and consistent methodologies are necessary for objective color recording. Clinical significance: Studies assessing the color of in-vivo natural teeth show a high level of heterogeneity due to the diversity in the type of measurement devices used, experimental conditions, illuminant, number of teeth used, area of measurement, and color coordinates reported. Future research must consider more extensive and representative population samples, with standardized reporting of demographic characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity), and more detailed inclusion and exclusion criteria. It is crucial to prioritize the standardization of measurement conditions, using a non-contact instrument, calibration, and detailed reporting of color.Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca - Institutional open access progra
