Nudibranchs as Sources of Marine Natural Products with Antitumor Activity: A Comprehensive Review

    No full text
Nudibranchs have garnered increasing interest in biomedical research due to their complex chemical defense mechanisms, many of which are derived from their diet, including sponges, cnidarians, tunicates, and algae. Their remarkable ability to sequester dietary toxins and synthesize secondary metabolites positions them as a promising source of biologically active compounds with potential therapeutic applications, particularly in oncology. This study aimed to review and summarize the available literature on the bioactive potential of nudibranch-derived compounds, focusing mainly on their antitumor properties. Although research in this area is still limited, recent studies have identified alkaloids and terpenoids isolated from species such as Dolabella auricularia, Jorunna funebris, Dendrodoris fumata, and members of the genus Phyllidia. These compounds exhibit notable cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines, including those from colon (HCT-116, HT-29, SW-480), lung (A549), and breast (MCF7) cancer. These findings suggest that compounds derived from nudibranchs could serve as scaffolds for the development of more effective and selective anticancer therapies. In conclusion, nudibranchs represent a valuable yet underexplored resource for antitumor drug discovery, with significant potential to contribute to the development of novel cancer treatments

Introduction. Human mobility is a global phenomenon that requires a multidimensional approach from social work. Facilitating the social inclusion and well-being of migrants, refugees, or applicants for international protection through local initiatives is a challenge for professionals working in public administration at the local level and in non-governmental organizations. This study aims to describe the services and programs designed to assist these populations in the city of Granada (Andalusia, Spain), as well as to examine the areas of intervention, target groups, and types of initiatives currently in place. Complementarily, it seeks to identify those initiatives regarded as good practices by professionals and to explore the criteria they use to assess them as such, along with the main components of social innovation they perceive within them. The dynamic nature of this reality—shaped by political, budgetary, and other contextual factors—highlights the need for applied social research at the local level. Methods. An online survey was conducted using LimeSurvey and distributed to social service professionals from the City Council and non-governmental organizations working with these populations in Granada. The fieldwork was carried out between October 2023 and June 2024. Univariate and bivariate statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, and open-ended questions were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results. The main areas of action of the services and programs identified are social, legal, educational, economic, health, and residential. The most frequently mentioned groups served are migrant women, people in an irregular administrative situation, applicants for international protection, migrant families, and victims of gender-based violence. The services and programs most frequently cited by City Council professionals are those aimed exclusively at migrants or applicants for international protection, those for children and families, those responsible for processing aid, and initiatives for gender equality. The most frequently exposed by non-governmental organizations are those related to training, residential care, job placement, basic needs, and legal or administrative advice. In general, they rate almost all of the initiatives identified as good practices. The most recurring components of social innovation are that they meet unmet needs, offer innovative solutions to structural problems, and promote empowerment. Discussion and conclusions. The criteria for considering services and programs as good practices have more to do with their purposes than with their effectiveness, although they also highlight initiatives that hire migrants to serve migrants, promoting their job placement and thus reducing the power asymmetry in the social care relationship. Beyond the limitations of the sample, this study will enable the design of an informative guide to services and programs in the locality, which will be useful both for migrants or people in need of international protection and for professionals in the social field.Facultad de Trabajo Social (UGR)Departamento de Trabajo Social y Servicios Sociales (UGR

Development of a comprehensive model for the design of photovoltaic solar public lighting systems in rural and urban areas

    No full text
This article presents a model for the optimal design of solar street lighting, considering factors such as street width, required average illuminance, solar irradiance, and luminaire characteristics. The goal is to achieve a sustainable installation that ensures adequate lighting levels. The model optimizes pole distribution, luminaire height, battery capacity, and solar panel power, prioritizing a holistic approach over an individual one. While applicable worldwide, a study conducted in Oman validated its effectiveness, revealing that reducing luminaire power does not always lead to lower overall energy consumption or costs. Its key innovation lies in integrating lighting and renewable energy into a single calculation process—unlike traditional methods, which first design the lighting installation and then calculate the battery and PV module requirements separately

Clinical Practice Guidelines on Normal Labour and Childbirth: A Systematic Review

    No full text
Background: Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are essential for promoting evidence-based maternal and neonatal care, but inconsistencies in recommendations can be confusing. Objectives: To analyse the quality and reporting of international CPGs for normal birth and summarise the recommendations. Search Strategy: Registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021269488), the study identified CPGs on normal birth through systematic searches in databases like MEDLINE, Cochrane, Scopus and WOS, along with direct outreach to international organisations. Selection Criteria: CPGs published from 2010 to December 2024 were included, with no language restrictions. Data Collection and Analysis: The quality and reporting of CPGs were evaluated using the AGREE II and RIGHT tools, and recommendations were summarised. Main Results: Of the 25 CPGs analysed, the median AGREE II quality score was 54%, and the median RIGHT reporting score was 50%. The highest scores were from WHO (2018), CINETS (2013) and the Spanish normal childbirth CPG (2010). Notably, 56% of CPGs had poor reporting, while only 8% were adequately informed. Common recommendations included the presence of support persons, avoiding routine interventions (e.g., enemas, shaving), encouraging fluid intake, allowing movement during labour and promoting skin-to-skin contact. Conclusions: Most CPGs on normal childbirth are outdated and exhibit poor quality and reporting. There is a pressing need for improvements to ensure valid, consistent and updated recommendations that enhance maternal and neonatal health

Digital social networks have become an effective medium for disseminating information and generating learning opportunities. Teacher professional development institutions are actively utilizing these new tools. This study aims to analyze the use of social media by the Centros del Profesorado (CPs) of Andalusia. The research examines the networks and content shared by these centers, as well as the nature of the digital relationships between the CPs and among the advisory staff. A qualitative-descriptive methodology was employed, analyzing the social media presence of the thirty-two CPs in Andalusia, including X, Instagram, and Facebook, during the months of April-May 2024. The study identified key content categories, such as institutional information, training offers, and internal activities. It also applied a social network analysis to examine the interactions between the CPs and between the advisory staff. The results show that CPs primarily use social media to communicate institutional matters and promote educational events, with X being the most widely used platform. Additionally, the presence of digital affinity spaces, such as hashtags and online networks, was observed, which foster collaboration among advisors within their regional context. The analysis also reveals that, although CPs interact with each other, these interactions are often provincial, limiting the creation of a broader and more integrated educational network. The study highlights the potential of social media to facilitate professional learning communities but emphasizes the need for a more collaborative and transprovincial approach to maximize its impact on teacher development.NextGeneration EU/PRTR/Junta de Andalucía PROYEXCEL_00826MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 TED2021-129820B-I00, JDC2023-050398-

Geochemical Features and Mobility of Trace Elements in Technosols from Historical Mining and Metallurgical Sites, Tatra Mountains, Poland

    No full text
Ore mining and smelting are often related to environmental pollution. This study provides information about the geochemical features of Technosols at historical mining and metallurgical sites in the Tatra Mountains, southern Poland, evaluating the contents of potentially toxic trace elements (PTTE) and their behaviours in soils, as well as the influence of soil properties on PTTE mobility. Thirteen soil profiles were studied in eight abandoned mining and smelting sites. PTTE concentrations, including rare earth elements (REE), were measured using ICP-MS and ICP-OES. Selected elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Sb, Ba, Sr, Co, Ni, Mn and Cr) were fractionated using the modified European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) four-step sequential extraction. Contamination of soils with PTTE was compared against Polish regulatory limits, which were exceeded for Cu, Zn, Pb, Mo, Hg, As, Co, Ni and Ba, with concentrations exceeding limits by 16, 18, 34 and 160 times for Cu, Hg, As and Ba, respectively, in some profiles. Based on geochemical features depending on parent material properties, the soils examined were divided into three groups. Group I Technosols (near-neutral soils developed from Fe/Mn-ore and carbonate-bearing mining waste) were particularly enriched in Co, Ni, Mn and REE. Group II Technosols (acidic soils developed from polymetallic ore-bearing aluminosilicate mining waste) contained elevated concentrations of Cu, Zn, Hg, As, Sb, Bi, Co, Ag, Ba, Sr, U and Th; they contained lower contents of REE than Group I Technosols. Group III Technosols (soils developed in smelting-affected areas and containing metallurgical waste) were rich in Cu, As, Sb, Ba, Hg, Co and Ag and contained the lowest REE contents among the studied soils. Sequential BCR extraction revealed that PTTE mobility varied strongly according to soil group, with higher mobility of Mn, Cu and Zn in acidic polymetallic ore-derived soils (Group II), while carbonate-rich soils (Group I) showed mainly immobile forms. Metallurgical slag-derived soils (Group III) exhibited complex PTTE behaviour controlled by organic matter and Fe/Mn oxides. Soil properties (pH, carbonates and TOC) seem to control PTTE mobility.National Science Centre, Poland (no. 2021/41/N/ST10/03129

Project number 123B837 under the TÜBİTAK Science and Society 4005 ProgramÁrea o categoría del conocimiento: STEAM EducationThis study investigates the impact of ecology-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) activities on biology teachers’ ecological citizenship, STEAM awareness, and attitudes toward art education. Designed as a convergent parallel mixed-methods study, it involved 26 in-service biology teachers from diverse regions in Türkiye. Quantitative data were collected using three validated instruments: the Ecological Citizenship Scale, the STEM Awareness Scale for Secondary School Teachers, and the Attitude Toward Art Education Scale, applied as pre- and post-tests. Qualitative data was obtained through teachers’ daily reflections, focus group interviews, and lesson plans developed during the training. The results showed significant improvements in teachers' ecological citizenship, STEM awareness, and attitudes toward art education. Teachers appreciated the interdisciplinary nature and classroom applicability of the 26 STEAM activities conducted over six days. While participants expressed high motivation to integrate STEAM practices, some lesson plans revealed insufficient interdisciplinary alignment, particularly in incorporating engineering, mathematics, and technology components. The findings highlight the potential of STEAM-based professional development to support both environmental awareness and pedagogical growth. However, the study also underscores the need for ongoing support in curriculum literacy and integrated instructional design to ensure the effective adoption of STEAM approaches in science education.Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart UniversityProject number 123B837 under the TÜBİTAK Science and Society 4005 Progra
