Traducción multimodal y accesibilidad: aprendizaje servicio en ONG

    No full text

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Micro- and Nanoplastics Driving Adverse Human Health Effects

    No full text
Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are increasingly recognized as emerging contaminants of concern for human health. Their small size, diverse composition, and reactive surface enable interactions with biological barriers and cellular systems. This comprehensive narrative review synthesizes and critically evaluates current evidence on the mechanistic effects of MNPs in humans and experimental models. Systemic mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, barrier disruption, and immune dysregulation, may underlie reported adverse effects in the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular, nervous and reproductive systems, as well as the placenta. Omics studies further reveal alterations in metabolic and stress-response pathways, providing systems-level insights and candidate biomarkers. Human data remain limited to biomonitoring studies, and causality has not yet been established. Toxicological data, though informative, often rely on pristine particles and high-dose, short-term exposures that exceed environmental estimates, highlighting the need for chronic, low-dose models. Major challenges include difficulties in detecting and quantifying MNPs in tissues, limited attribution of effects to polymers versus additives or adsorbed contaminants, and lack of standardized characterization and reporting. Emerging advances, such as reference materials, omics profiling, and organ-on-chip technologies, offer opportunities to close these gaps. Overall, the available data suggest biologically plausible pathways for health risks, but methodological refinement and harmonized research strategies are essential for robust human health assessment

Non-funerary commensality in the Argaric Culture: Archaeozoological analysis of Structure E50.44 from Peñalosa (Baños de la Encina, Jaén, Spain).

    No full text
Acts of commensality are well recorded throughout the Late Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as throughout the rest of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Moreover, meat played a fundamental role in marking social differences and strengthening communal ties in special celebrations laden with strong cultural, economic, political, and social connotations. Research on commensality associated with the Argaric Culture (2200–1550 BCE) of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula has focused almost exclusively on finds of faunal remains in funerary contexts. This study opens a new line of research on this phenomenon through the analysis of an exceptional faunal deposit (Structure E50.44) brought to light in the acropolis of the settlement of Peñalosa (Baños de la Encina, Jaén). The feature consists of a circular masonry pit and filled for the most part with faunal remains. Taxonomic and taphonomic analyses of the finds have identified species common to the site, notably cattle, caprines, pig, red deer, wild boar, rabbit, and hare. However, the most notable characteristic is its predominance of horse. The presence of butchery marks, the rarity of bones in anatomical connection, the abundance of prime meat-bearing elements belonging for the most part to adults of all species, in addition to a lack of structure’s deliberate internal organisation, allow linking it and its fill to an act of commensality that very probably represented an exceptional event for the residents of Peñalosa. The sample comprised of 288 children attending public preschools. Data were collected using the Test of Early Mathematics Ability–Third Edition (TEMA-3) and a demographic questionnaire. Results indicated that maternal education level is a more powerful and statistically significant predictor of children's early-math abilities compared to paternal education. While higher paternal education is descriptively associated with higher math scores, this relationship does not acquire statistical significance. According to regression analysis age, SES, and preschool attendance significantly predicted mathematical ability. On the contrary, gender, birth order, and handedness were not among the significant predictors.Balikesir University (Türkiye)Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (Türkiye

Influence of pulse duration on the effects induced by three Nd:YAG lasers operating at 1064 nm to tempera paintings mock-ups

Laser cleaning of soiled wall paintings is a conservation practice that has been adopted for decades. However, the increasingly widespread availability of laser technology highlights the need to optimize the choice of laser systems and, consequently, the parameters used on a case-by-case basis. In this study, three Nd:YAG lasers (1064 nm) with different pulse durations were tested: a short free-running system (110 μs), long Q-switched system (100 ns), and Q-switched (8 ns). These lasers were tested on tempera painting mock-ups made of one pigment (i.e. malachite, azurite, lead white, orpiment, or cinnabar) mixed with an organic binder (i.e. egg yolk or rabbit glue) applied to a lime mortar. Each laser was also evaluated in tablets composed solely of one pigment. The reference and irradiated temperas were studied using stereomicroscopy, spectrophotometry, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The pigment tablets were also analyzed with micro X-ray diffraction (μXRD). All samples suffered blackening after laser irradiation, the intensity of which depended on the nature of the pigment and the binder. Overall, pigment susceptibility was broadly comparable across the three pulse-duration lasers. Cinnabar exhibited the highest level of susceptibility, followed by copper carbonates and orpiment, while lead white proved to be the least affected pigment. The binders exhibited a protective effect on the pigments, although this effect was more intense in egg yolk paintings. Regarding pulse duration, it was found that at low fluences, the laser with the longest pulse duration generated the lowest color changes, while at high fluences, this same laser generated the greatest impact on the temperas. Physical effects were observed in the samples (mineral melting and binder loss), though these were not proportional to the intensity of the blackening.MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 -“ERDF A way of making Europe”- EU - Andalusian Research Group RNM-179 (PID2021-123395OA-I00 project)MICIU - ESF+ (Grant PRE2022-105106)“Programa de axudas á etapa predoutoral da Xunta de Galicia” - EU - FSE+ Galicia 2021-2027 (ED481A-2023/086 predoctoral contract)MICIU - “ESF Investing in your future” (RYC2020-028902-I project)Universidade de Vigo / CISUG (open access charge

Association Between Maternal Dietary Fatty Acid Intake and Fatty Acid Composition of Placental Phospholipids

    No full text
Background: Fatty acid status during the perinatal period is important for optimal offspring growth and development. Objectives: We aimed to test the association between maternal fatty acid (FA) intake during the third trimester of pregnancy and the FA composition of placental phospholipids, a marker of maternal fatty acid status. Methods: This cohort study was performed on 54 mothers participating in the PREOBE study. Maternal dietary intake was assessed with prospective 7-day food diaries at 34 weeks of gestation. Placenta samples were collected immediately after delivery and phospholipid FA was quantified with established methods. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlations and linear regression models, with adjustment for confounding factors. Results: Total energy intake was 2019 ± 527 kcal/d (mean ± SD) and total fat intake of the mothers was 87 ± 35 g/day. Myristic, stearic, oleic, and α-linolenic acid intakes were modestly correlated with placental percentages, with r-values ≤ 0.33. Only docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid intake (%-energy, %-fat, and g/d) showed r-values > 0.4 for the correlation with placenta phospholipids. Intake of other fatty acids, including arachidonic acid, was not associated with the placenta percentage. Linear regression models considering confounders showed only dietary DHA intake significant associations. Total fat intake did not interfere with the association of DHA intake with placental incorporation. Conclusions: DHA and arachidonic acid are enriched in the placenta, but only placental DHA content seems modifiable by maternal dietary DHA intake.Junta de Andalucía: Excellence Projects (P06-CTS-02341)European Research Council (ERC-2012-AdG, 322605 META-GROWTH)German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF

The Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) is located in one of the Canary Islands, an oceanic archipelago that belongs to the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot and lies <100 km from NW Africa. We aim to help improve conservation in this territory by complementing traditional biodiversity metrics with phylogenetic analyses, using the two official plant DNA barcode sequences (matK and rbcL), and distribution data for 202 endemic angiosperm taxa within the GCBR, which encompasses about 42% of Gran Canaria's territory. We compare the geographical patterns of Phylogenetic Diversity (PD) and Phylogenetic Endemism (PE) with traditional diversity metrics such as Species Richness (SR) and Weighted Endemism (WE), and we use categorical analyses of neo-and paleoendemism. Our results highlight significant centres of PD and PE that do not entirely overlap with those detected for SR and WE. Notably, the northern region of the GCBR includes important conservation areas, representing either accumulations of ancestral diversity or spots of incipient speciation. Moreover, evolutionarily significant areas displaying high values of neo- and paleophylogenetic endemism were identified in the east and southeast of the GCBR beyond the current core zones and protected areas. These results highlight the enhanced resolution provided by PD and related metrics, and offer a more nuanced understanding of plant biodiversity compared to SR alone. This study underscores the need to establish a new core zone to preserve all key plant evolutionary sites within the GCBR and to ensure comprehensive protection of the endemic flora, which will require coordination among conservation biologists and decision-makers. The methodology used showcases the value of integrating taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity metrics for guiding the design of protected areas and improving territorial management in the Canaries and other oceanic archipelagos.Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Medio Rural y MarinoMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación ASTERALIEN-PID2019-110538GA-I00, Ramón y Cajal Program (RYC-2016-20506)Fundación BBVA, Grant/Award Number: INVASION-PR19_ECO_0046Programa MAC 2014-2020 NEXTGENDEM-(MAC2/4.6d/236)MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 WIDESLANDS: PID2023-149086NB-I00FEDER/U
