Seasonal changes in and characteristics of aquatic animal communities in Rakuno Gakuen paddy field
BulletinThis study surveyed aquatic animals in Rakuno Gakuenʼs constructed paddy field (ca. 16 a). Although the paddy field used tap water as a water source and was not directly connected to other water bodies, many aquatic animals were observed. A total of 1,069 aquatic animals from 30 species were found over six surveys conducted in the paddy fields. This number of species was similar to that of aquatic animal surveys conducted in other paddy fields. The number of animals increased from early June, when the survey began, reached a peak in early July, and then gradually decreased. Many early-stage individuals, such as the larvae of both dragonflies and beetles and juveniles of Anura, were confirmed. Therefore, it is suggested that the paddy field surveyed in this study acted as a breeding area and nursery for aquatic animals.departmental bulletin pape

Milk and dairy product awareness of this university students : From the breakfast fair questionnaire
Milk and dairy products are foods that support human health and have contributed to the health maintenance of the Japanese people as highly nutritious foods. Japanʼs milk production increased after World War II but has been declining since 1997, reaching 7.71 million tons in fiscal year 2022. Since the fall of 2007, this university has been conducting a “Dietary Improvement Week” (“Breakfast Fair”) to increase the breakfast intake rate among its students and to raise awareness of dietary habit improvement. At the Breakfast Fair, this university conducts an ongoing survey on food-related issues. This study compares and examines the attitudes of their students toward milk and dairy products based on the questionnaire responses obtained at the breakfast fair regarding milk and dairy product intake. The results showed that the number of students who habitually consume milk and yogurt has been decreasing year by year. This suggests that the dietary habits of this university may be disordered. It was considered necessary to actively educate students about milk drinking in the future. We thought it necessary to inform the students that not drinking milk would not only negatively affect their health but could also lead to the decline of Japanese agriculture and dairy farming in the future.departmental bulletin pape

Effect of wildlife on regeneration of forest in Hayakita, Hokkaido, Japan
BulletinIn the forests of Hayakita, located in the eastern part of the Iburi district of Hokkaido, wildlife feeds on planted broadleaf tree saplings and naturally regenerated seedlings. However, a specific assessment has not been conducted, and the effect of wildlife on these forests remains unclear. In this study, we conducted camera trapping and damage surveys on planted broadleaf saplings and seedlings. The camera traps revealed that sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) frequently utilized both broadleaf and conifer plantations during the nonwinter season. Conversely, the Hokkaido hare (Lepus timidus ainu) frequently used broadleaf tree plantations during the winter season. Many bite scars from deer and hare were confirmed on the plants of the broadleaf tree plantations. Notably, during the snowy season, in aodamo (Fraxinus lanuginosa Koidz) plantations, hare footprints, dung and bite scars were more prominent than those from sika deer. Due to the limited one-year study period, it was not possible to definitively determine whether the increase in the number of species and seedlings was influenced by wildlife. Nevertheless, our findings clearly indicate that wildlife feeding damage affects forest regeneration in the Hayakita plantation area. In particular, the Hokkaido hare caused more damage to planted broadleaf tree saplings than sika deer in this study area. In the future, measures will be necessary to prevent damage to saplings not only by sika deer but also by the Hokkaido hare.departmental bulletin pape
Cases of parasitic diseases in aquatic animals corresponded by the Wild Animal Medical Center (WAMC) at Rakuno Gakuen Unversity since 2018 : Application to core curriculus in education of fish pathology in Japan
To develop education on fish pathology that aligns with the unique model core curriculum at Rakuno Gakuen University in Japan, it became necessary for the Wild Animal Medical Center to expand its research focus to include aquatic animals such as fish. Therefore, following previous reports, this study complies and examines cases of parasite identification and parasitic disease diagnosis in aquatic animals handled by the center since 2018. Furthermore, the study discusses the application of these findings to the core curriculum in education on fish pathology and explores future challenges.departmental bulletin pape
