Structure of snow clouds and snow fall process caused local heavy snow fall over Ishikari plain : Case of 5 February 2022
Get PDFBulletinThe Sea of Japan in Hokkaido receives localized heavy snowfall owing to convective snow clouds. Herein, the cell structure of convective snow clouds that caused heavy snowfall over Sapporo in February 5, 2022, as well as the heavy snowfall process over the Ishikari Plain were investigated. The reflection intensity of X-band polarization radar and the Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) results were used for these investigations. Radar reflectivity revealed that the snow clouds passed over Sapporo from 1900 JST to 2100 JST. CReSS results revealed a horizontal convergence band reaching over Sapporo between northwest and northerly winds at a height of 250 m; the cells derived based on graupel and snow mixing ratios were concentrated along the coast and inland areas, respectively. The vertical summations of snow number concentrations were larger near the coast and around the Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory and smaller near the inland, consistent with the snowfall intensity distributions. Consequently, snow crystals that form snowflakes were produced in large quantities during coastal cell development and transported inland by northwesterly winds. The graupel mixing ratio cell distribution expanded as the convergence zone oriented toward Sapporo. These results collectively suggest that the snowfall maxima were observed in the inland areas.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFBulletin獣医学教育モデル・コア・カリキュラム対応の酪農学園大学獣医学類独自の寄生虫（病）学教育を展開するため，2004 年以来，同大野生動物医学センターで対応した寄生性昆虫類に関する同定（鑑定）やその寄生によって生じた疾病の診断事例などについてまとめた。To develop an education in parasitology that aligns with the unique model core curriculum at Rakuno Gakuen University in Japan, it became necessary for the Wild Animal Medical Center to expand its archaeological pathological or epidemiological research focus to include parasitic insects obtained from free-ranging and/or captive wild mammals and birds. Therefore, this study complies with and examines cases of parasite identification and parasitic disease diagnosis in both such hosts and parasites handled by the center since 2004. Furthermore, the study discusses the application of these findings to the core curriculum in parasitology education and explores future challenges.departmental bulletin pape
Differences in mitochondrial damage and functional changes between slow- and fast-twitch muscles in mildly diabetic model mice
Get PDFBulletin血糖値の上昇が軽度であり，体重減少が起こらない軽度糖尿病モデルマウスでは骨格筋が萎縮した。この糖尿病マウスの速筋のミトコンドリアでは損傷が見られなかったが，遅筋のミトコンドリアではクリステ構造の崩壊が観察され損傷が顕著だった。これと一致して速筋の影響が大きい握力は糖尿病の誘導による変化は見られなかったのに対して，遅筋の影響が大きいぶら下がり時間は減少した。軽度糖尿病モデルマウスにおいて速筋よりも遅筋のミトコンドリアの方が傷害を受けやすく，特に耐久力が低下する。Patients with severe diabetes exhibit impaired physical activity in the skeletal muscles, known as diabetic sarcopenia. In this study, we focused on the changes in the limbic muscles of diabetic mice. Six-week-old C57BL/6J male mice were fed a combinatory treatment with a 60 kcal% high-fat diet (HFD) for 11 weeks and intraperitoneally injected with streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg). Body weight and epididymal adipose weight were significantly increased in HFD- and STZ-treated mice (P<0.05). HFD and STZ treatments elevated fasting blood glucose levels to 157 mg/dL. Because of the relatively low elevation in blood glucose levels, these mice were defined as mildly diabetic model mice. Diabetic mice exhibited reduced weights in mixed (gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, and quadriceps femoris), slow-twitch (soleus), and fast-twitch (extensor digitorum longus muscle) muscles. Electronic microscopic images indicated that diabetic treatment adequately induced severe mitochondrial damage in slow-twitch muscles. Conversely, treatment did not cause any evident changes in fasttwitch muscles. In addition, the hanging time of diabetic mice was shorter than that of age-matched control mice (P<0.05). However, grip strength did not differ between HFD- and STZ-treated mice and control mice (P=0.54). The change in hanging time is primarily influenced by slow-twitch muscle function, indicating that the mitochondria of slow-twitch muscles may be more susceptible to damage than those of fast twitch muscles, thereby resulting in reduced muscle endurance in mild diabetic conditions.departmental bulletin pape

Theological Implications in Courtier Tales : A Comparison between Dead Sea Scroll 4Q550 and Biblical Accounts
Get PDFBulletinIn the Dead Sea Scrolls, there are fragments called 4Q550. These fragments were published by Milik as an Aramaic proto-Esther in 1992, causing a sensation among scholars between 1992 and 2002. The argument of whether or not 4Q550 are fragments of Esther is not as much of a concern as what those fragments reveal about the historical background and theology of the Qumran community. To explore that, comparison will be carried out between 4Q550 and mainly final forms (Masoretic Text) of courtier tales that were “canonized” later, including the Joseph story in Genesis 37-50, the story of Daniel and his companions in the Book of Daniel 1-6, and the Esther and Mordecai story in the Book of Esther 1-10. The time span of the comparison is generally from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century CE., especially the Hasmonean period. First, we will look at materialistic and social aspects of the stories and then philosophical and theological aspects. As a result, the comparison between DSS4Q550 and these Biblical narratives reveals similar elements in the social dimension yet a crucial difference in the theological dimension. DSS4Q550 does not accept the Chroniclersʼ theology of retribution within a generation. This might be the result of Essenes in the Qumran community who could not accept the “wicked” priest-king of the Hasmonean dynasty, who did not experience retribution within their lifetime or ruling period. If so, for Qumran community, retribution within a generation is Sollen, but not Sein. Nevertheless, the Qumran community could have hope, because they believed in the eternity of souls and that the retribution issue could be solved in the extended sphere. So-called theodicy issues became difficult to explain if there are rigid conditions. DSS4Q550 and early Christianity have extended the resolution to the afterlife and the heaviness of theodicy issues might have become lighter.departmental bulletin pape
