First record of chewing lice Brueelia pyrrhularum Eichler, 1954 (Ischnocera: Philopteridae) on an Eurasian bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula L in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan
ArticleA deceased male adult Eurasian bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula, was collected in March 2017 from Kushiro Natural Red-crowned Crane Reserve, Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan. In the post-mortem examination, three adult chewing lice were obtained from the body surface. The present specimens were identified as Brueelia pyrrhularum Eichler, 1954 by morphological measurements and characteristics. This is the first record of B. pyrrhularum from Japan.journal articl
In December 2005, the carcasses of 24 seabirds were found on a sidewalk near to Nemuro Port, Hokkaido, Japan, and most of them were heavily damaged by other birds and frozen. Among them, two Common Murres, Uria aalge, and one Spectacled Guillemot, Cepphus carbo, were estimated as relatively better condition for postmortem, hence, postmortem examination was performed. Each individual had sufficient subcutaneous fat and was in good nutritional status. In addition, characteristic lacerations were observed in the neck and wings, suggesting circulatory disorders such as congestion of the lungs and venous system. Therefore, it was considered that these seabirds were artificially transported and dumped after being entangled in fishing nets and drowning.journal articl
Chewing Lice Found on Captive Tufted Puffin, Fratercula cirrhata
ArticleDuring the postmortem of tufted puffin chicks (Fratercula cirrhata), who died a few days after hatching in the aquarium, a large number of chewing lice were collected. These lice were identified as Quadraceps helgovauki (Philopteridae) based on morphological caracteristics. This is the first record of Q. helgovauki from F. cirrhata and in Japan. journal articl
Clistobothrium sp. (Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea) in oarfish (Regalecus russelii) stranded on the coast of Akita Prefecture, Japan
ArticleOarfish (Regalecus russelii Cuvier) are mesopelagic fish with little known about their life history. Oarfish live in deep water, making it difficult for researchers to collect specimens; thus, records of their parasitic helminths are limited. Two plerocercoids were found for the first time in an oarfish stranded on the coast of Akita Prefecture, Japan. These plerocercoids were identified as Clistobothrium sp. RR-1 using morphological and molecular analyses. It was revealed that oarfish represent one of the intermediate hosts of the genus Clistobothrium, and large sharks are the definitive hosts for these parasites.journal articl
