Existence of periodic orbits in nonlinear oscillators of Emden-Fowler form

    Get PDF
"The nonlinear pseudo-oscillator recently tackled by Gadella and Lara is mapped to an Emden-Fowler (EF) equation that is written as an autonomous two-dimensional ODE system for which we provide the phase-space analysis and the parametric solution. Through an invariant transformation we find periodic solutions to a certain class of EF equations that pass an integrability condition. We show that this condition is necessary to have periodic solutions and via the ODE analysis we also find the sufficient condition for periodic orbits. EF equations that do not pass integrability conditions can be made integrable via an invariant transformation which also allows us to construct periodic solutions to them. Two other nonlinear equations, a zero-frequency Ermakov equation and a positive power Emden-Fowler equation, are discussed in the same context.

"We investigate numerically the effect of additive and multiplicative noises on parametric oscillator systems of Ermakov-Ray-Reid type when both noises act simultaneously. We find that the main perturbation effects on the dynamical invariant of these systems are produced by the additive noise. Different from the separate action of the multiplicative noise when the dynamical invariant of these systems is robust, we also find a weak effect that can be attributed to the multiplicative noise.""Se investigan numéricamente los efectos de los ruidos aditivos y multiplicativos sobre los sistemas dinámicos de osciladores paramétricos de tipo Ermakov-Ray-Reid cuando los dos tipos de ruidos actúan de manera simultánea.

En cambio, la proteína Cgalfa2 no forma heterodímeros eficientemente.""The fungal pathogen Candida glabrata is a haploid asexual yeast. C. glabrata contains orthologues of the genes that control mating and cell type identity in other fungi, which encode putative transcription factors localized in the MAT locus in Saccharomyces cerevisiae or MTL in other fungi. C. glabrata contains three copies of the CgMTL locus but only CgMTL1 correctly expresses the information encoded in it. CgMTL1 can encode the Cga1 gene (a information), or the Cgalpha1 and Cgalpha2 genes (alpha information). CgMTL2 contains an identical copy of the Cga1 gene. CgMTL3 contains an identical copy of the Cgalpha1 gene but a longer variant of the Cgalpha2 gene we termed Cgalpha3. In S. cerevisiae diploid cells that express a and alpha information, Sca1 and Scalpha2 proteins form a heterodimer, which represses genes expressed only in haploid cells and some genes involved in response to stress. We constructed C. glabrata strains that simultaneously express Cga1 and Cgalpha2 or Cga1 and Cgalpha3 genes. We did not find any phenotype in these strains when grown under a large variety of stress and nutritional conditions. However, we could detect an interaction between Cga1 and Cgalpha2 and the formation of Cgalpha3 homodimer by Bimolecular Fluorescent Complementation and Co-IP. However, Cgalpha2 does not form heterodimers efficiently.

Structural basis for redox regulation of cytoplasmic and chloroplastic triosephosphate isomerases from Arabidopsis thaliana

"In plants triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) interconyerts glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) during glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the Calvin-Benson cycle. The nuclear genome of land plants encodes two tpi genes, one gene product is located in the cytoplasm and the other is imported into the chloroplast. Herein we report the crystal structures of the TPIs from the vascular plant Arabidopsis thaliana (AtTPIs) and address their enzymatic modulation by redox agents. Cytoplasmic TPI (cTPI) and chloroplast TPI (pdTPI) share more than 60% amino acid identity and assemble as (beta-alpha)(8) dimers with high structural homology. cTPI and pdTPI harbor two and one accessible thiol groups per monomer respectively. cTPI and pdTPI present a cysteine at an equivalent structural position (C13 and C15 respectively) and cTPI also contains a specific solvent accessible cysteine at residue 218 (cTPI-C218). Site directed mutagenesis of residues pdTPI-C15, cTPI-C13, and cTPI-C218 to serine substantially decreases enzymatic activity, indicating that the structural integrity of these cysteines is necessary for catalysis. AtTPIs exhibit differential responses to oxidative agents, cTPI is susceptible to oxidative agents such as diamide and H2O2, whereas pdTPI is resistant to inhibition. Incubation of AtTPIs with the sulfhydryl conjugating reagents methylmethane thiosulfonate (MMTS) and glutathione inhibits enzymatic activity. However, the concentration necessary to inhibit pdTPI is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the concentration needed to inhibit cTPI. Western-blot analysis indicates that residues cTPI-C13, cTPI-C218, and pdTPI-C15 conjugate with glutathione. In summary, our data indicate that AtTPIs could be redox regulated by the derivatization of specific AtTPI cysteines (cTPI-C13 and pdTPI-C15 and cTPI-C218). Since AtTPIs have evolved by gene duplication, the higher resistance of pdTPI to redox agents may be an adaptive consequence to the redox environment in the chloroplast.

"Background: Soil seed banks play an important role in post-disturbance regeneration and succession of species from different successional stages. Questions: 1) What is the most effective method for determining the composition and structure of the soil seed bank of Andean forests? 2) What is the composition and structure of soil seed banks in old-growth forest and shrubland sites in the Andean montane tropical forest of the North Santander region of Colombia? Study site: Andean forest, Pamplona, Colombia Methods: We surveyed the soil seed bank in two successional stages of Andean forest and examined its structure using two sampling methods: direct separation and germination. Results: Soil seed bank density was higher (18-fold in old-growth forest and 666-fold in shrubland) with the direct separation method than with germination; however, under the germination method, we found four species that we did not detect through the direct separation method. Soil seed banks from shrublands were mainly dominated by species from disturbed areas (91 %), while those from the old-growth forest presented early, intermediate and late species; e.g., Miconia summa, Myrsine dependens and Solanum sp., respectively. In the old-growth forest (especially for late species), density increased with depth. This pattern was not observed in shrubland. Seeds obtained by using the direct separation method presented low (< 7 %) viability. Conclusion: We consider the two methods to be complementary and recommend the use of both for a thorough characterization of soil seed banks from Andean forests. At different successional stages in the Colombian Andean forest, the soil seed bank may contain early, intermediate and late species, and it therefore plays an important role in the regeneration of this threatened ecosystem.""Antecedentes: Los bancos de semillas del suelo juegan un papel importante en la regeneración de especies de diferentes etapas de sucesión.

Study of the effect of the dispersion of functionalized nanoparticles TiO2 with photocatalytic activity in LDPE

"A photodegradable Low Density Polyethylene-Titanium dioxide (LDPE-TiO2) nanocomposite film was prepared, and its evaluation considers the partial modification of the surface of the particle using Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTS) as functionalizing agent under Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Reaction efficiency of the nanoparticles was evaluated with Thermogravimetric (TGA) and infrared analysis (FT-IR). Nanocomposites were prepared by a melt blending technique; using a twin-screw extruder, each nanocomposite film was thermoformed into different shapes for further evaluation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was utilized to determine the size and distribution of nanoparticles in the polymer. Experimental results indicate that surface modification increases the degree of dispersion while decreasing the particle size, enhancing the particle's compatibility with the polymer matrix. Photocatalytic degradation was assessed through accelerated degradation weathering in a chamber under UV radiation to assess the performance of photocatalytic degradation. These tests indicated, that the particle's homogeneity of dispersion and size reduction by functionalization allows for homogeneously degraded surfaces (SEM) to generated a greater abundance of oxidized groups in the sample compared with unfunctionalized sample.

Platinum nanoclusters in silica: Photoluminescent properties and their application for enhancing the emission of silicon nanocrystals in an integrated configuration

    Get PDF
"We studied photoluminescence of ion implanted platinum nanoclusters embedded in silica. Pt ions were implanted at 2 MeV and the Pt nanoclusters were then nucleated by thermal treatment under either argon, air, or a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen and nitrogen. The nanoclusters showed broad photoluminescence spectra (400 to 600 nm) with a maximum intensity at 530 nm. The photoluminescence intensity of the Pt nanoclusters was sensitive to the ion fluence used during the ion implantation, and luminescence quenching was observed in samples fabricated at high Pt-ion fluence. A hybrid system composed of silicon nanocrystals and platinum nanoclusters embedded in a silica matrix was also made. The photoluminescence of the hybrid system spanned the entire visible spectrum, and emission from the silicon nanocrystals was enhanced.

A parameter to evaluate for establishing the quality in these resources is organic matter. In water, organic matter is dissolved or suspended and it proceeds from soil, food waste, domestic sewage or factories. Soil, is provided by particulate and dissolved natural organic material (SOM, DOM); although it may be impacted by anthropogenic dissolved organic matter (AOM). The DOM is found in soil solution and it is an important component, due to, its high affinity to pollutants. The aim of this work was to develop a methodology with 3D fluorescence to characterize DOM in soil, surface water, agricultural land and groundwater. This work is a contribution to the knowledge of charascteristics and evolution of DOM, natural and anthropogenic in these environments. The first analysis was conducted in 49 drinking water sources located near the Toluca-Lerma (Toluca Valley, State of Mexico) industrial zone. 51 percent of samples exceeded the limit for drinking water COD. By analyzing 3D Fluorescence DOM and AOM were identified. Aromatic proteins (AOM) were observed in San Mateo-Lerma, Toluca, Lerma and Ocoyoacac industrial areas. This demonstrates the influence that industrial development has had in the area over water quality. 60 percent of samples showed AOM contamination. The second research describes the methodology with 3D fluorescence to characterize DOM in soil. The DOM sample was extracted in a dry sample and in a wet sample with HPLC water, 0.01 M KCl solution and 0.01 M KNO3 solution in temperate soil and arid climate. In temperate soil only DOM was identified, in arid climate sample, aromatic proteins and amino acids (AOM). In extracts with KNO3 solution the influence of nitrogen was observed, reflected by a shift of the spectrum to 240 nm. The spectra obtained by wet sample extracts, 0.01M KCl solution and soil pH shows better defined and delimited peaks. The excitation wavelength was unchanged and the emission with little variation. Infra-red results, confirm the presence of anthropogenic organic compounds: carboxylic acids, amines and amides. The third research conducted, shows 3D fluorescence methodology application in agricultural soil irrigated with industrial wastewater. The aim to observe the DOM evolution throughout the soil profile.
