Evolution of spherical cavitation bubbles: parametric and closed-form solutions
"We present an analysis of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for a three dimensional vacuous bubble in water. In the simplest case when the effects of surface tension are neglected, the known parametric solutions for the radius and time evolution of the bubble in terms of a hypergeometric function are briefly reviewed. By including the surface tension, we show the connection between the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and Abel's equation, and obtain the parametric rational Weierstrass periodic solutions following the Abel route. In the same Abel approach, we also provide a discussion of the nonintegrable case of nonzero viscosity for which we perform a numerical integration. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.
This process requires successive cycles of adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis. Kinesin takes, on the average, 100 steps of 8 nm per encounter with a microtubule. This property is called processivity and its value is 800 nm for a single kinesin-1 molecule, in vitro. However, because in cells cargoes are transported by groups of proteins (ranging from one to seven), it is important to investigate transport by more than one motor. Our goal is to determine kinesin-1 DmK401 processivity in vitro, when one or more than one motor molecule transports the same cargo, by tracking cargoes using video microscopy. As cargo we used polystyrene microbeads that we incubated with two different kinesin dilutions. To measure processivity, we trap individual beads with optical tweezers and bring them in contact with a microtubule, after which we wait for the bead to show directed motion. Immediately after directed movement begins we shutter the laser beam, allowing for free motor stepping on the microtubule without load. Each event was registered in a video. Videos were analyzed with a LabVIEW program that automatically follows the bead position, from where we determine the distance traveled by kinesin. The measured processivity of single DmK401 molecules is 500 nm, the velocity is 650 nm*s-1. When a bead had more than one kinesin molecule we noted cargoesreach distances ≥ 7 μm. Our measurements of DmK401 processivity are essential for us because we want to study cargo transport in a more complex enviroment, as, for example, in a three-dimensional microtubule network.
Detailed study of radon spatial anomaly in tlamacas mountain area, volcano Popocatepetl, Mexico
"Results of a soil radon survey accomplished by 2 different methods during 2 different periods in the area of Tlamacas Mountain are presented. The first study, carried out from 15-APR-2010 to 09-MAY-2010 in 30 measurement sites by means of CR39 solid state nuclear detectors, shows 2 active zones with intensive radon emanation with a characteristic dimension of about 300 meters located in the northwestern and western parts of the Mountain. The second survey, made on 05-JUL-2011 in 23 measurement sites with 10 min sampling by a SARAD RTM 1688 Radon/Thoron monitor, in contrast, revealed a sizeable area depleted in radon and 3 active areas of increased radon release in the lateral Mountain sides. These observed phenomena strengthen our assumption about the presence of an active geological structure in Tlamacas Mountain connected with a geodynamical processes in volcano Popocatepetl.
Evaluation of the expression and function of the P2X7 receptor and ART1 in human regulatory T-cell subsets
"Regulatory T cells that express CD39 (CD39+ Treg) exhibit specific immunomodulatory properties. Ectonucleotidase CD39 hydrolyses ATP and ADP. ATP is a ligand of the P2X7 receptor and induces the shedding of CD62L and apoptosis. However, the role of ATP in CD39+ Treg cells has not been defined. Furthermore, NAD can activate the P2X7 receptor via ADP-ribosyltransferase (ART) enzymes and cause cell depletion in murine models. We evaluated the expression and function of P2X7 and ART1 in CD39+ Treg and CD39- Treg cells in the presence or absence of ATP and NAD. We isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy subjects and purified CD4+ T cells, CD4+ CD25+ T cells and CD4+ CD25+ CD39+ T cells. P2X7 and ART1 expression was assessed by flow cytometry and real-time PCR. Our results showed low P2X7 expression on CD39+ Treg cells and higher levels of ART1 expression in CD4+ CD39+ T cells than the other subtypes studied. Neither shedding of CD62L nor cell death of CD39+ Treg or CD39- Treg cells was observed by 1mM ATP or 60 mu M NAD. In contrast, P2Xs receptor-dependent proliferation with 300 p,M ATP, was inhibited by NAD in the different cell types analysed. The NAD proliferation-inhibition was increased with P2X5 and A2a agonist and was reversed with P2X5 and A2a antagonist, therefore NAD inhibits P2Xs-dependent proliferation and A2a activation. In conclusion, our results suggest that the altered function and expression of P2X7 and ART1 in the human CD39+ Treg or CD39 Treg cells could participate in the resistance against cell death induced by ATP or NAD.
eficientes para la solubilización de carbohidratos.""In recent times, biotechnological processes for CO2 sequestration and biofuel
production represent a feasible alternative to reduce the negative effects caused
by the overexploitation of fossil fuels. In particular, biogas generated from the
anaerobic digestion of microalgae and hydrogen from dark fermentation are
considered third generation biofuels alternative that shows important advantages in
comparison to first- and second- generation biofuels. In this work, methane
production from thermally treated microalgal biomass obtained from Scenedesmus
obtusiusculus cultures was evaluated in systems operated under batch and semicontinuous
mode. In batch experiments, methane production yield ranging from
113 to 213 mL CH4/ g CODconsumed was observed with microalgal biomass
concentrations between 2 and 10 g COD/L, respectively. On the other hand,
systems operated under semi-continuous mode reached volumetric methane
production rates of 2 L CH4/L-d with methane yields of 370 mL CH4/g CODconsumed,
for 10 g COD/L-d of organic loading rate. COD consumption, under optimal
conditions was about 70%. These results showed that microalgal biomass could be
used for biogas generation. Moreover, the performance and its potential can be
increased when performing a thermal treatment of the biomass. Semi-continuous
biogas production results demonstrated that is not necessary to operate on large
hydraulic retention times to get high yields and volumetric production rates.
Fermentative hydrogen production through microalgal biomass is feasible.
However this processes should be studied in terms of pre-treatments for
carbohydrate solubilization.
The constant transformation of natural habitats that result from human activities is reducing the cover of natural forests, and this may have implications for biological conservation. The inclusion of abandoned fields within protection zones can be an important element for maintaining biological diversity in disturbed ecosystems because of the adaptability of species with different habits (generalists vs. specialists). However, there are a wide range of variations on this adaptability that can lead to populations in unstable equilibria and, thus, constant monitoring is required. In an oak forest disturbed by human activities, which includes grassland habitats and eucalyptus plantations, the diversity and structure of lepidopteran communities were compared among different habitat types. Differences in lepidopteran assemblages were found in the different habitat types, season and oak species. Adult diurnal lepidopterans were associated with different habitat types according to the season, indicating that this group uses both preserved oak forests as induced grasslands. Assemblages of lepidopteran larvae changes in their richness, diversity and intra- and interspecific
interactions between oak species, habitat types and seasons of the year. These results indicate that fragmented forests may contain a high diversity of lepidopterans, which would be related to the increases of habitat heterogeneity and host plants, while forest fragmentation due to land use change can increase the diversity of this group and lead to changes in intra- and interspecific interactions on the studied assemblies.
del cáncer bacteriano.""Tomato, S. lycopersicum, is one of the crops most consumed worldwide, and its
production is affected by several pathogens, among these the most important is the
bacteria Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm). The disease
caused by Cmm is known as bacterial canker and currently there is no effective
treatment, however, there are reports where wild tomato relatives show some
resistance to Cmm, thus representing a source of genes that could be transferred to
susceptible species. In this study, were analyzed the function of genes potentially
involved in the resistance to Cmm by virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) and the
subsequent challenge with the pathogen. Two genes in particular where analyzed,
the first one encodes the SUMO E2 conjugating enzyme (SCEI); and the second
encodes an ABC family transporter that confers, pleiotropic drug resistance (PDRI). A
VIGS vector was designed based on the Tomato Mottle Virus (ToMoV). SCEI gene
silencing in S. peruvianum did not showed any aberrant phenotype, which allowed its
subsequent analysis of inoculation experiments with Cmm. Plants that were silenced
for SCEI gene and then challenged with Cmm showed increased susceptibility to this
pathogen, suggesting its role in the defense mechanism against Cmm. On the other
hand, PDRI gene silencing in S. habrochaites performed by TRV vector, did not alter
significantly the response of the plants to the challenge with Cmm, which suggests
either that this gene is not implicated in the resistance to this pathogen or the
silencing with TRV was not efficient. However, the silencing of the same gene with
the vector derived from ToMoV resulted in a slight increase on the susceptibility to
Cmm; however, the level of damage was not statistically significant. Overexpression
of the SCEI and PDRI genes in susceptible plants can be a control strategy against
bacterial canker.
un buen candidato para desarrollar nuevos tratamientos contra la osteoporosis.""Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the most common bone disease, with high impact
on public health. However, the deleterious side effects of medical treatments for
osteoporosis make it necessary the development of more effective and safer
drugs. A subgroup of phytoestrogens the flavonoids, are candidates for treating
human osteoporosis since them stimulate osteogénesis and do not generate
adverse side effects on other tissues. Here we evaluated the osteogenic potential
of isoorientin (ISO), a C-glycosyl flavone, in primary cultures of human osteoblasts.
Alkaline phosphatase activity increased by 20 fold in the presence of ISO added to
osteogenic medium (MO-ISO) compared to the negative control (basal medium;
MB), and did not have significant differences against the positive control
(osteogenic medium supplemented with retinoic acid; MO-AR). ISO increased the
expression of collagen type 1 respect to the MO control as evaluated by picrosirius
red staining and RT-PCR analysis. By scanning electron microscopy we detected
higher cell density and increased extracellular matrix in the ISO treated cells than
in the MO control. Calcium quantification did not reveal significant differences
between the treatments. In summary, ISO increases the expression of several
osteogenic markers in primary human osteoblasts; thus ISO is a good candidate
for the development of new antiosteoporotic medicines.
Gram positiva Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), constituye
However, cancer or bacterial canker caused by the Gram-positive bacterium
Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), represents one of the most
important limiting factors in its production. The conventional control method used for
this disease implies the use of chemicals, which not always turns out to be effective
against Cmm, even producing resistant bacterial populations. Obtaining resistant
tomato cultivars to this pathogen could be an environmentally friendly control
strategy.
In this work we achieved the overexpression of the SCEI gene which encodes for
the E2 conjugating enzyme (SCEI) in a tomato species susceptible to Cmm. SCEI
encodes proteins related to sumoylation, a process involved in the plant’s defense
mechanism against pathogens. Our research group demonstrated that SCEI
participates in the resistance to infection by Cmm, because its silencing by RNA
interference in a related wild tomato species resistant to Cmm, increased the
susceptibility of plants to this disease, which suggests its participation in disease
resistance. SCEI overexpression in S. lycopersicum var. Aisa Craig was performed
by transformation of hypocotyls with Agrobacterium tumefaciens harboring a binary
vector for the expression of the SCEI gene driven by the CaMV 35S promoter. The
plant transformation was confirmed by PCR assay for the SCEI and the NPTII
selection marker transgenes. The overexpressing transgenic lines were infected with
Cmm as a challenge showing a clear resistance to the infection contransting with the
high susceptibility to the disease in the wild type line. This demonstrate that
overexpression of the SCEI gene confers tolerance to the disease to a susceptible
species which suggests a possible participation of SCEI in early Cmm post-infection
stages as a defense mechanism of the plant.
In this work, iron oxyhydroxides were anchored onto activated carbon by means
of a microwave assisted hydrothermal process (M-H) to increase its arsenic
adsorption. Pristine and iron modified activated carbons were characterized by
N2 phisisorption, acidic digestion, potentiometric titration, TGA, XRD and SEM.
The results showed that the materials surface area remained in the range from
703.94 to 796.49. Iron content of F400, Mn-F400, Fe-F400, Fe:Mn-0.02M,
Fe:Mn-0.2M, Fe:Mn-1M, Fe:Mn-1.5M and Fe:Mn-2M was 0.42, 0.27, 2.51, 1.39,
1.48, 1.76, 2.47 y 3.45 %, respectively. pHPZC values for F400, Fe:Mn-2M, Fe-
F400 and Mn-F400 were 9.02, 4.61,4.62 y 4.82, respectively. Fe:Mn-2M
presented an increment in carboxylic and phenolic groups, compared with
F400. Furthermore, XRD analysis indicated the presences of Hematite and
Goethite, which are the most thermodynamic stable iron phases, also no Mn
phases were found. SEM studies showed needles shapes nanoparticles on Mn-
F400 and Fe-F400. This morphology is typical of Hematite and Goethite.
Moreover, the addition of Mn(II) during iron anchorage disclosed various
crystalline habits such star, quasi-sphere, urchin and interconnected branches
shapes. These morphologies could be promoted by a twinning effect. The
Fe:Mn-2M micrograph showed an homogenies distribution of iron
oxyhydroxides, detected by backscattered electrons. On the other hand, the
adsorption experiments suggest that the adsorption capacity depends of the
Fe:Mn concentration, and synthesis time did not have effect. Fe:Mn-2M material
showed a higher adsorption capacity (5.9 mg g-1) than others modified activated
carbon reported in the literature. The Langmuir model best fit the adsorption
experimental data in all materials, obtaining R2 values of 0.95 for F400 and 0.97
for Mn-F400, Fe-F400 and Fe:Mn-2M. Finally, the pH effect indicated that the
arsenic removal with iron modified activated carbons is mainly conducted by
ligands interchange and not by electrostatic attractions.
