Shape-anisotropic nickel-PDMS composites with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy obtained by emulsification under magnetic field
"Magnetic microcomposites were fabricated by emulsification of a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and nickel microparticles. The composites were obtained in a temperature-controlled water-surfactant media with and without the influence of an external magnetic field. The presence of a moderate external magnetic field of 80 G (8 mT) during the polymerization stage leads to the arrangement of nickel microparticles into chains that form the magnetic core of the synthesized composites. The method allows controlling the shape of the composite particles by applying a magnetic field and varying the stirring speed. Three shapes of composite particles, namely spherical, teardrops, and ellipsoidal, were obtained and magnetically characterized. Room temperature hysteresis loops and dM/dH versus H curves in the second-to-third quadrants show that spherical particles are isotropic while non-spherical particles show an induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy which depends on the shape of the resulting composite particles.

Los resultados obtenidos con ambos métodos concuerdan aceptablemente.""The present work has as objective to perform an analysis of the processes of forced convection generators of storm clouds like the cumulusnimbus through techniques of remote sensing and numerical modeling. The study area includes the Sierra de
Álvarez and the Sierra de San Miguelito located in the Middle Zone of the state of San Luis Potosí. These sierras have great importance in the regional atmospheric dynamics due to the topographic effect that generates forced convective processes.
For numerical modeling the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) is used in the Advancede Research WRF (ARW) mode. We describe the numerical modeling of two case studies of high intensity; the displacement of a convective system on November 2, 2013 and a storm with tornado presence on June 8, 2016 obtaining valuable information about its formation and evolution. Cloud products from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) series such as Cloud Water Path (CWP), Clout Top Pressure (CTP), Cloud Cover (CC), Cloud Top
Temperature (CTT) and Cloud Top Height (CTH) with a 15 minute time resolution are used to analyze the convective cycle and the temporal evolution of the storm of June 9, 2013. In order to analyze climate trends and seasonal variations in the
region, 10 years of MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data were also used, from 2007 to 2016 from both Terra and Aqua plataforms. A program was developed to compare data obtained from numerical modeling and cloud
products from GOES and MODIS. Convective cloud hotspots are identified as well as the main causes of the spatial location of these hotspots. This work, which combines numerical modeling and satellite information for the study of convective
processes, sets a precedent in Mexico. The results obtained with both methods agree acceptably.
Tissue carbon concentration of 175 Mexican forest species
"Reliable calculations of carbon stocks in forest ecosystems are crucial for proper implementation of global warming mitigation policies. Accurate estimations depend upon applying the correct factor of carbon (C) concentration for different forest species and tissues instead of the often assumed 50% carbon content. Despite the high forest species richness in Mexico and the increasing CO2 emissions, data on carbon concentrations in forest plant tissues are scarce. In this study, we determined variation in C concentration of different tissues for 175plant species common in Mexican forests. C contents were estimated and contrasted for plant distribution, taxa, and plant structure (main stems, branches, twigs, bark, leaves, buds, fruits, roots and root cuticles). The mean C concentration across species was 44.7%. Species significantly differed in C concentration by tissue, environment and taxa. These multi-species data contribute to improve precision on estimates of C balance in terrestrial ecosystems, reducing the uncertainty in C inventories in Mexico and elsewhere.
Adicionalmente, se muestra el efecto XIX de fluctuaciones de temperatura y campo magnético en la fracción arrestada de austenita.""The focus of the present thesis is the study of both: the kinetic arrest of the martensitic transformation in non-stoichiometric Heusler alloys with nominal composition Ni50Mn36In14 and Ni45Co5Mn36.8In13.2 and the magnetocaloric effect in the austenitic phase of a Ni50Mn36-XIn14-XSiX (0.0 < x < 2.0) series. Both phenomena result from the influence of the applied magnetic field around the martensitic structural transformation and the magnetic transition of austenite, respectively. The samples studied were melt-spun ribbons fabricated by means of rapid solidification using the melt spinning technique. Both, as-quenched and annealing alloys are single-phase at room temperature and the austenite, or parent phase, shows B2 or L21-type cubic crystal structures, while the average size of their columnar-like grained microstructure does not change appreciably upon thermal annealing. Ni50Mn36In14 and Ni45Co5Mn36.8In13.2 alloys undergo martensitic transformation; for the Ni50Mn36-XIn14-XSiX (0.0 < x < 2.0) series austenite phase exists in the entire temperature range experiments made. For the studied alloys, the thermal annealing improves chemical and crystallographic ordering resulting in a slight increase in the structural and magnetic transition temperatures, an increase in the saturation magnetization of both phases, and a more abrupt change of magnetization across the structural or magnetic transitions. The variation of magnetic entropy change ∆SM(T) curves for as-solidified Ni50Mn36-XIn14-XSiX (0.0 < x < 2.0) are well broader and show lower variation of maximum magnetic entropy change │∆SMpeak│ values with respect to the annealed ones. For a magnetic field change of 2 T the as-solidified (annealed) samples show a peak value of the magnetic entropy change │∆SMpeak│ of 2.5 (3.1) J·kg-1K-1. For the same magnetic field change, the refrigerant capacity, estimated as the product of │∆SMpeak│·∆TFWHM of the ∆SM(T) curve, reaches values of 138 (98) J·kg-1. With working temperatures │∆TFWHM│of 72 and 43 K, respectively. For Ni50Mn36In14 melt-spun ribbons a moderate but progressive kinetic arrest of the austenite to martensite phase transformation is observed for an applied magnetic field of 1 T and above. It disappears after a short heat treatment of 10 min. at 1073 K, suggesting a relationship between crystallographic ordering of the austenite phase and the magnetic field on the austenite-martensite phase transition. For the annealed Ni45Co5Mn36.8In13.2 alloy a total kinetic arrest is observed at µoH = 7 T. The increase of the applied magnetic field progressively decreases the temperatures of the martensitic transformation. The kinetic arrest of martensitic transformation gives rise to a metastable state, in which austenite and martensite coexist; this state show characteristics similar to a glass and was studied by designing several magnetization experiments. The effect of thermal and magnetic field fluctuations on the arrested fraction of austenite is also shown.
Effect of the concentration of PVA and DVB in the particle Size of polystyrene sintetized via suspension polimerizacion and their possible use as vehicle of ZnO nanoparticles
la distribución y tamaño promedio de partícula y sus características térmicas""Zinc oxide it’s a material with a wide number of applications, it is known than it has antibacterial properties and it can
degrade azo-derivate dyes, like methylene blue. Yet, it nanometric scale makes it very difficult to use. Polystyrene it’s a
pretty cheap material that its used for the fabrication of daily use articles, some examples are containers for beverages and
disposable tableware, and precisely because of its price we are willing to use it for the fabrication of a porous vehicle that
will carry the nanoparticles of the zinc oxide for its easier use. In this work, we talk about the synthesis of polystyrene beads
via suspension polymerization for its use as vehicles for nanoparticles. To make it possible, some variables from the
suspension polymerization process where evaluated like the effect produced by different concentrations of the surfactant or of
the crosslinking agent, on the medium particles size and the thermal resistance.
The Soconusco region of Chiapas, Mexico, has a primary economic activity in the agricultural sector; it is currently supplied by water from wells and waterwheels. This thesis consisted in making a hydrogeochemical characterization of the aquifer of Soconusco, by analyzing 45 samples that were taken from springs, streams, wells and waterwheels in the study area. That is located in the coastal plain and the Sierra Madre of Chiapas which consists of Tertiary igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Paleozoic Era. The Dragging of clastic unconsolidated material favored the deposition of Quaternary sediments which caused the soil linked of the coastal plain. Therefore, it is obvious proximity to the coast makes it prone to seawater intrusion from the Soconusco aquifer. For this reason, it was necessary to quantify the contribution of the seawater intrusion. Furthermore, through a VISHMOD Methodology, it was possible to identify the end members in the conservative elements F- vs. Cl- (mg/L), and the quantification of the contributions through each member in the mixing process. Whereas, by knowing the path of the groundwater flow in the aquifer, the mineralogical composition and the hydrogeochemical characterization, the calculation of the ionic delta of the modeling selected points was attainable. This hydrochemical tool, allowed us to quantify the process of water-rock interaction that was occurring during the evolution groundwater in the aquifer. The hydrogeochemical processes and space-temporal distribution result from the chemical signatures of the aquifer. As a result, we were able to distinguish these types of water; calcium and magnesium bicarbonate, calcium sulfate, and lastly the sodium chlorinated that is associated with seawater intrusion. Finally, the hydrogeochemical analysis of the major ions and trace elements, in conjunction to the construction of various diagrams, allowed the identification of the dominant processes such as oxide-reduction, mixing, ion exchange, mineral dissolution and precipitation reactions; that are involved in the groundwater evolution.
Stability and multiscroll attractors of control systems via the abscissa
"We present an approach to generate multiscroll attractors via destabilization of piecewise linear systems based on Hurwitz matrix in this paper. First we present some results about the abscissa of stability of characteristic polynomials from linear differential equations systems; that is, we consider Hurwitz polynomials. The starting point is the Gauss–Lucas theorem, we provide lower bounds for Hurwitz polynomials, and by successively decreasing the order of the derivative of the Hurwitz polynomial one obtains a sequence of lower bounds. The results are extended in a straightforward way to interval polynomials; then we apply the abscissa as a measure to destabilize Hurwitz polynomial for the generation of a family of multiscroll attractors based on a class of unstable dissipative systems (UDS) of affine linear type.
Paleomagnetism and aeromagnetic survey from Tancitaro volcano (Central Mexico) - paleo-secular variation at low latitudes during the past 1 Ma
The Tancitaro volcano (TV) is part of the Michoacan-Guanajuato monogenetic volcanic field (MGVF) in the central-western sector of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). Results of a paleomagnetic study of radiometrically dated lava flows from Tancitaro volcano were used to investigate the paleosecular variation (PSV) and time averaged field (TAF) at low latitudes. Ar-Ar dates range from ~70 to 960 kyr spanning the Brunhes and Matuyama polarity chrons. All samples yielded well defined normal polarity magnetization. Two flows are correlated to the Jaramillo polarity event, which provide a useful marker for the volcanic activity in the MGVF. For the PSV and TAF analysis, paleodirections were combined with previously reported high standard results. The aeromagnetic survey around the Tancitaro volcano was characterized by a trend of regional anomalies over the volcanic structures. The residual field showed several positive and negative anomalies. The Tancitaro volcano is marked by a broad positive anomaly suggesting the presence of a large underground source. Spectral analysis of this anomaly field gives an average estimate to the top of the source bodies between 2-3km.
Tree recruitment
is sensitive to this change and, in Mexico, oak trees can be particular threatened (Quercus spp.,
Fagaceae). Further, Mexican oak forests have been heavily affected by land use changes and
extreme environmental factors impair their recruitment in deforested areas. Thus, climate change
can negatively affect both forest maintenance and its regeneration in deforested areas. This study
was aimed to determine the effects of climate change and land use change on the recruitment
dynamics of Quercus eduardii, evaluating whether their seedlings display functional responses in
face of these factors. For this, we performed a field experiment in which acorns of the target species
were sowed in plots where higher temperature and lower precipitation conditions were induced,
which contrasted with control plots under the current climatic conditions. This experimental design
was replicated within a well-preserved oak forest and a deforested area. Both acorn germination
and seedling survival were monitored during the experiment. In both habitats, the induction of
climate change conditions reduced germination and seedling survival. Further, those seedlings that
survived until the end of the experiment exhibited modifications of their functional attributes,
especially in their leaves, which were indicative of thermal and water stress. These results suggest
that climate change could magnify the effects of the environmental factors that regulate the
recruitment of Q. eduardii, both within forests and in deforested areas.
