Morphometric and hypsometric analysis in the Tierra Nueva Basin, San Luis Potosí, México
"In areas with long periods of drought, it is essential to implement strategies to manage the available water resource. Tierra Nueva Basin is affected by this situation, consequently the farm production and livestock holdings are affected and the people don’t have access to enough water. In this paper, we propose an integrative methodology based on mathematical tools such as hypsometric and morphometric analysis applying geographic information systems. The proposal is strengthened with the aggregation of geological-structural, morphometrical, hypsometrical parameters and climatological information through a precipitation analysis provided by the National Water Commission from 1962 to 2010. According to the available data and the results obtained through the implemented proposal, an acceptable level of reliability is inferred allowing to determine areas structurally suitable for the use of surface water and its uptake. The methodology that we propose facilitates and simplifies the processes of searching and exploring locations suitable for surface water capture in arid and semi-arid zones, identifying in a qualitative and quantitative manner the optimal zone. For the case study, test-and-validation of the methodology the Tierra Nueva Basin in San Luis Potosí, México was selected. Tierra Nueva is a semi-arid site where “La Muñeca” dam is located. The results obtained in this work confirm the location of the “La Muñeca” dam as one of the most suitable areas for water collection. The methodology that we propose is a useful tool for the studies of water capturing purposes in arid and semi-arid zones.
Insights on structure and function of a late embryogenesis abundant protein from Amaranthus cruentus: an intrinsically disordered protein involved in protection against desiccation, oxidant conditions, and osmotic stress
"Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are part of a large protein family that protect other proteins from aggregation due to desiccation or osmotic stresses. Recently, the Amaranthus cruentus seed proteome was characterized by 2D-PAGE and one highly accumulated protein spot was identified as a LEA protein and was named AcLEA. In this work, AcLEA cDNA was cloned into an expression vector and the recombinant protein was purified and characterized. AcLEA encodes a 172 amino acid polypeptide with a predicted molecular mass of 18.34 kDa and estimated pI of 8.58. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that AcLEA is evolutionarily close to the LEA3 group. Structural characteristics were revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance and circular dichroism methods. We have shown that recombinant AcLEA is an intrinsically disordered protein in solution even at high salinity and osmotic pressures, but it has a strong tendency to take a secondary structure, mainly folded as alpha-helix, when an inductive additive is present. Recombinant AcLEA function was evaluated using Escherichia coli as in vivo model showing the important protection role against desiccation, oxidant conditions, and osmotic stress. AcLEA recombinant protein was localized in cytoplasm of Nicotiana benthamiana protoplasts and orthologs were detected in seeds of wild and domesticated amaranth species. Interestingly AcLEA was detected in leaves, stems, and roots but only in plants subjected to salt stress. This fact could indicate the important role of AcLEA protection during plant stress in all amaranth species studied.
"Dehydrins or Group 2 Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins play an important role in the response and adaptation to different types of abiotic stresses such as droughts, high salinity and low temperatures. Using PCR techniques, we identified three gene fragments that encoded dehydrin-like proteins in three cacti species Opuntia ficus-indica (OpfiDHN-like), Leuchtenbergia principis (LepDHN-like) and Mammillaria bombycina (MabDHN-like). Bioinformatic sequence analysis showed an identity between 96 and 97% with the Opuntia streptacantha dehydrin 1 (OpsDHN1) gene, demonstrating that the amplified fragments corresponded to dehydrin- like gene sequences, and that the designed oligonucleotides were effective for similar gene amplification in different cacti genera. Multiple OpfiDHN-like, LepDHN-like and MabDHN-like alignments showed that they possessed three repetitions of the conserved K segment. Also, a histidine rich motif was found, which is believed to facilitate the binding of these proteins with metal ions that probably evolved differently in the Opuntioidea and Cactoidea subfamilies of the Cactaceae family. Bioinformatic tools demonstrated that each of the three partial amino acid sequences corresponded to acidic, highly hydrophilic, and disordered protein fragments, which are characteristics of dehydrin proteins. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony, indicated that cacti dehydrins-like proteins were monophyletic, as well as those of other families.""Las dehidrinas o proteínas abundantes de la embriogénesis tardía (LEA) del grupo 2 juegan un rol importante en la respuesta y adaptación a diferentes tipos de estrés abiótico como deshidratación, alta salinidad y bajas temperaturas.
Bioreactors packed with activated carbon fibers as redox mediators in the anaerobic biotransformation of 4-Nitrophenol to 4-Aminophenol
The role of functional groups on the surface of activated carbons is of great interest in biological redox processes because they could improve the rate of biotransformation of toxic compounds and reduce costs of water treatment. In this study, we used activated carbon fibers (ACFs) as biological supports and redox mediators for the continuous biotransformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). Different ACFs were prepared from the original material (AW), including HNO3-treated ACF (AW-OX), and redox-active anthraquinone-2,6- disulfonate anchored on ACF surface (AW-AQDS). These ACFs were characterized by potentiometric titrations (point of zero charge and Boehm), FT-IR, and N2-adsorption (BET method). The ACF-packed bed bioreactors (AW, AW-OX and AW-AQDS) with anoxic granular biomass were evaluated for their ability to reduce 4-NF to 4-AP under continuous conditions, and compared to a control bioreactor with only anoxic granular biomass. Our results show that ACFs with a higher concentration of carbonyl groups AW-OX > AW-AQDS > AW (1.3 > 1.0 > 0.8 meq/g) improved the biotransformation of 4-NF by 2.11 > 1.97 > 1.47 fold, respectively, as compared to the control bioreactor.

Globally, Mexico ranks fourth in geothermal energy, only below the United States, the Philippines and Indonesia. The Mexican Republic is crossed by a young volcanic belt called Neovolcanic Axis or the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which crosses through the center of the country from East to West where great geothermal potential is associated to this young volcanic activity. Due to this volcanic belt, Mexico has the ideal characteristics to develop this energy source. Areas where geothermal energy is already used are: the Baja California peninsula on the San Andrés fault system where the Cerro Prieto geothermal field is located, in Baja California the Tres Vírgenes field can be found, the San Pedro Dome in Nayarit, Los Azufres in Michoacán, Los Humeros in Puebla and Cerritos Colorados in Jalisco which is currently under development.
Therefore, in the present study, through the analysis of aeromagnetometry and geology, we seek to make a geophysical characterization of the dome complex Las Derrumbadas in the State of Puebla and to determine if the area can have geothermal potential, due to the geothermal manifestations and rock alteration evidence found on the surface.
A series of filters were applied to the aeromagnetic information, such as ascending continuations, first and second derivatives, analytical signal and reduction to the pole. All this to highlight specific characteristics to each one of the generated maps, with the purpose of being able to identify aeromagnetic domains, guidelines and specific information that would help us to have a better knowledge of our area of interest. All the information obtained favored the interpretation and generation of a final model, which were 3 2-D profiles and a 3-D model (the 2-D and 3-D models were obtained with the Oasis Montaj® software from Geosoft). The depths of the magnetic sources were estimated, causing the two positive anomalies located on the domes of Las Derrumbadas, the North dome magnetic source is located at 2.5 km in depth and the South dome at 3.5 km, associating these two sources with the top of an intrusive body which was handled as the magnetic source and associated with a possible heat source for a geothermal system.
In the present work the synthesis of Mn2-XCrXSb (0.06 ≤ x ≤ 0.12) alloys, bulk and melt-spun ribbons, and their magnetic and structural characterization are reported. Bulk samples were obtained by induction melting and ribbons with the melt spinning technique from induction-melted bulk samples. Room temperature XRD analyses shows that the main phase that crystallize in all samples shows the tetragonal Cu2Sb-type crystal structure. Also, a weak reflection observed that is attributed to a small amount of second phase, identified as MnSb precipitates, which crystallizes in the hexagonal Ni2In-type crystal structure, in agreement with the reported by other researches. This phase is observed as small precipitates in SEM micrograph on melt-spun ribbons surface. In these Mn2-XCrXSb compounds (0.06 ≤ x ≤ 0.12), a first order magnetic phase transition from the ferrimagnetic (FIM) to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state occurs with decreasing temperature. The transition temperature increases with increasing Cr content, while the saturation magnetization decreases with the increase in the Cr content. Magnetization measurements show that ribbon samples reduce their thermal hysteresis after a thermal annealing at 1073 K (800oC) during 4 hours followed by a cooling at rate of 5 k/min from 15 K to 4 K, 10 K to 4 K, 10 K to 4 K and 16 K to 2K, for the Cr concentration of 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12, respectively.
Many of them come from the exposure of inorganic compounds, as heavy metals and metalloids that we can find in our natural environment or due to anthropogenic activities. One of these compounds of major importance is arsenic (As), which is a highly toxic and harmful element for organisms that are in contact with it, being a priority pollutant due its great ecotoxicological potential. Due to its wide distribution and mobility in groundwater and surface waters, it is vital to implement technologies that allow the attenuation of this metalloid, such as physicochemical and biological processes. It is known that certain microorganisms influence the mobility and speciation of arsenic, performing oxidation-reduction processes; therefore, the study of microorganisms present in sites where this pollutant is located is relevant to known their metabolic capabilities in detail that allow to implement biotechnologies to deal with pollution problems caused by arsenic. In this context, the present work focuses on a microbiological study of sediments recovered from sites with high concentrations of arsenic (> 2263 mg/Kg sediment) and other metals, from the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Experiments were carried out in batch trials with sediments as inoculum, in order to select microorganisms capable of respiring arsenate, As (V), as electron acceptor at a concentration of 5 mM and lactate as an electron donor at a concentration of 5 mM. The enrichments were cultured in solid media to isolate microorganisms able to respire arsenic. The enrichments performed arsenate reduction with lactate as substrate, and besides arsenic, the enrichments were also capable of using sulfate or nitrate as electron acceptors. Further, 14 isolates were retrieved from the enrichments able to growth in solid media with high arsenic concentration. The results demonstrated that successfully isolated microorganisms of the genus Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Peanibacilum and Bacteroides, had the ability to use different electron acceptors such as sulfate and nitrate. From the cultivation of the isolates it was observed that these bacteria are facultative, developing in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In addition, it was demonstrated, by an assay to evaluate minimum inhibitory concentrations of metals, that some of the isolates have the ability to withstand heavy metals such as Pb (2mM), Cd (1mM)., Zn (3mM), and show As resistance in concentrations up to 50 mM, under aerobic conditions. Whereas, in their counterpart, under anaerobic conditions, they showed capacity to grow with arsenic but with a different growth rate than for aerobic conditions; showing a much slower metabolism when the metals were added, taking almost three weeks to grow, showing resistance to Pb (2mM), Cd (1mM) and Zn (3mM).
Continuous high and low temperature induced a decrease of photosynthetic activity and changes in the diurnal fluctuations of organic acids in Opuntia streptacantha
"Opuntia plants grow naturally in areas where temperatures are extreme and highly variable in the day during the entire year. These plants survive through different adaptations to respond to adverse environmental conditions. Despite this capability, it is unknown how CAM photosynthetic activity and growth in Opuntia plantlets is affected by constant heat or cold. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to evaluate the short-term effect of high (40°C) and low (4°C) continuous temperatures on the photosynthetic efficiency, the organic acid content (malic acid) and the relative growth rate (RGR) in seven-month-old Opuntia streptacantha plantlets during 5, 10, and 15 days. Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis allowed us to determine that high temperatures negatively impact the photosynthetic efficiency of O. streptacantha plantlets, which exhibited the lowest values of maximum quantum efficiency of the photosystem II (Fv/Fm = 52%, Fv/F0 = 85%), operational quantum yield of PS (?PSII = 65%) and relative electron transport rate (rETR = 65%), as well as highest values of basal fluorescence (F0 = 226%) during 15 days of treatment. Similarly, low temperatures decreased Fv/Fm (16%), Fv/F0 (50%), ?PSII and rETR (16%). High temperatures also decreased nocturnal acidification in approximately 34-50%, whereas low temperatures increased it by 30-36%. Additionally, both continuous temperatures affected drastically diurnal consumption of malic acid, which was related to a significant RGR inhibition, where the specific photosynthetic structure area component was the most affected. Our results allowed determining that, despite the high tolerance to extreme temperatures described for Opuntia plants, young individuals of O. streptacantha suffered photosynthetic impairment that led to the inhibition of their growth. Thus, the main findings reported in this study can help to predict the potential impact of climatic change on the establishment and survival of succulent species of arid and semiarid regions of Mexico.
""Currently, in the study of dynamical systems there is a great deal of interest on the
generation of chaotic systems with particular properties, such as structural simplicity,
multiscroll attractors, among others. There is a common feature in most of the methods
proposed for their construction, that is, the lack of rigorous proofs of chaos for the
resulting systems. For that reason in this thesis we propose to construct simple three
dimensional systems for which the chaotic behavior can be demonstrable. In particular,
we propose that the demonstration of chaos be done using the Shilnikov method. The
main di culty for this type of demonstration is to guaranty the existence of homoclinic
orbits and heteroclinic cycles. A way to construct chaotic systems is to ensure that the
resulting systems have homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits. In this thesis we propose three
families of piecewise linear systems for which is possible to demonstrate that their
dynamical behavior is chaotic using the Shilnikov method. We take advantage of the
geometric simplicity of the linear descriptions of the dynamics around the equilibrium
points of the system to propose a construction algorithm that gives a series of steps
such that de eigenspacies and swithing planes intersect in a way that guarantees that
the connections between the equilibrium points are through homoclinic or heteroclinic
orbits. We illustrate our results with numerical simulations of the di erent realizations
of piecewise linear chaotic systems constructed using the proposed algorithms for two
and three linear domains.
