Drawbead uplift force analytical model for deep drawing operations
Drawbead uplift force calculation has been an open issue among the deep drawing tool maker and software developers in the last years. Starting from the original work of Stoughton (1988) many have been the models presented in order to improve the predictions. However, still nowadays, the main deep drawing software are not able to accurately predict the uplift force and clear example of that are the intensive effort of the software developers in that topic as well as the conversion factors used by the main OEM when acquiring a new tool. In this work, a new semi-analytic model of drawbead closing force calculation is presented. The model is not only able to predict the uplift force for different steps of the closing (very useful for the set-up process) but it has been validated when using a high strength steel (DP780) for different drawbead configuration
An optimization methodology for material databases to improve cutting force predictions when milling martensitic stainless steel JETHETE-M152
A material database for JETHETE-M152 was developed applying a novel methodology for improving the precision of cutting forces. This approach defines a variable specific edge force depending on the feed rate and cutting edge geometry. Applying this methodology, accurate predictions could be obtained when using complex shape inserts with different micro-geometries or with feed rates lower than the cutting edge radius. These predictions showed an improvement compared to those of the strategy of keeping constant the specific edge coefficient. Furthermore, an orthogonal to oblique transformation technique was applied to predict the cutting forces in face and side milling. The results showed good agreement with experimental results
A Requirement Engineering Framework for Electric Motors Development
The applications using electric motors have increased in the last decade. Some of these applications encounter the need for tailor-made motors that must meet demanding requirements. Therefore, the specification stage of an electric motor is a critical part of its development. If this stage is properly addressed, then future failures in the development process can be avoided. This paper presents a requirement engineering framework to support small-medium electric motors designers/manufacturers with the development of their product. The framework identifies the stakeholders and the tasks that they should undertake to finish a successful requirements specification stage. The framework is made from the designer/manufacturer’s perspective and it emphasizes the derivation of specialized requirements (lower-level). The result of the framework is well-defined requirements that form the design requirements specification of the motor that leads to the beginning of the design stage

Membrane-containing virus particles exhibits mechanics of a composite material for genome protection
The protection of the viral genome during extracellular transport is an absolute requirement for virus survival and replication. In addition to the almost universal proteinaceous capsids, certain viruses add a membrane layer that encloses their double-stranded (ds) DNA genome within the protein shell. Using the membrane-containing enterobacterial virus PRD1 as a prototype, and a combination of nanoindentation assays by atomic force microscopy and finite element modelling, we show that PRD1 provides a greater stability against mechanical stress than that achieved by the majority of dsDNA icosahedral viruses that lack a membrane. We propose that the combination of a stiff and brittle proteinaceous shell coupled with a soft and compliant membrane vesicle yields a tough composite nanomaterial well-suited to protect the viral DNA during extracellular transport

Microfluidic separation processes using the thermodiffusion effect
The numerical and experimental results presented in this work show that a relatively small temperature gradient
(5K), has great potential to generate a separation in interesting mixtures for biological purpose. In fact, it improves molecular diffusion separation process of a protective cryo (10% of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS)) for cryopreserved cells, by 10%. This separation process was analyzed both numerically and experimentally, for which it was necessary to determine experimentally the thermophysical and transport properties of the mixture of 10% of DMSO in PBS. Experimental tests were done in a microdevice with a working section of 500μ m × 25 mm and a length of 75 mm, which was designed, constructed and first of all validated with the mixture of reference H2O-Isopropanol at a mass fraction of 50%. Experimental test with the protective cryo were done with in flow rates between 1000μL/min and 4000μL/min. The results confirm that the effect of thermodiffusion must be considered in handling processes of biological fluid mixtures because the
existence of a thermal gradient could improve the efficiency of the separation process in microdevices
