Spirituality in Response to Crisis : Ashikaga Yoshimochi’s Foreign Policy in East Asia
Full text linkThe rule of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi witnessed a significant diplomatic crisis in the fifteenth century following the invasion of Tsushima by forces from Joseon Korea and the breaking-off of diplomatic relations with Ming China. The shogun renounced the title "King of Japan," bestowed upon his predecessor by the Ming emperor, and used shinkoku rhetoric in official correspondence with the continent. This article reveals the reasons for Yoshimochi's stance, concealed within the ceremonial and ritual aspects of his rule. First, it investigates diplomatic relations between the Ashikaga Shogunate and the Ming government, and shows how the domestic political agenda and ceremonial cycle of the Japanese imperial court influenced shogunal decisions regarding the reception of diplomatic envoys. Second, it argues that Yoshimochi's termination of diplomatic exchange with the Ming was a political reaction to the reports of divine intervention brought by the priests of the Hachiman bodhisattva syncretic cult, rather than a geopolitical measure responding to the Joseon invasion of Tsushima. The article refutes the notion that the shogun demonstrated hostility towards foreigners caused by emerging national awareness. Finally, examining visits of Korean envoys after the diplomatic crisis of 1419, this article outlines the transformation of diplomatic protocol from Ming-dominated tributary ceremonies to a framework of Buddhist cultural exchange.journal articl
Japanese Studies at Bonn University
Full text linkIn my overview of Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn, I outline the major research projects and history of the institute. The projects undertaken highlight the strengths of Japanese Studies in Bonn, in particular studies of modern and contemporary Japanese culture and society. A further noteworthy characteristic is the combination of Japanese Studies with Korean Studies. I then outline general developments toward the current focus on modern literature and history. Finally, I question future possibilities for premodern Japanese studies, which are not so well represented in Bonn.articl
<研究論文>十九世紀半ばにおける江戸の人々の風刺精神 : 「源頼光公館土蜘作妖怪図」とA Drop of London Waterの比較を通して
Full text link歌川国芳画「源頼光公館土蜘作妖怪図」（天保13～14［1842～1843］年、以降「妖怪図」と略記）と、英国の絵入り風刺雑誌『パンチ』に掲載されたA Drop of London Water（1850）の比較を通して、江戸後期の人々の風刺精神について検討する。「妖怪図」は、その寓意についてさまざまな浮説が立ち、模倣絵が出回るほどの評判となったことが知られている。国芳の意図は判然としないものの、この絵は風刺錦絵の嚆矢的作品とみなされてきた。一方で、版元の商業的な側面も指摘されており、これを天保の改革批判の作品であると断定することは難しい。本論では、すでに風刺画が政策批判や世論形成の有効的手段であったロンドンで出されたA Drop of London Waterを比較対象として、「妖怪図」を再検討する。江戸期の出版物に見られる風刺性は、それが風刺か穿ちか、あるいは寓意の拡大解釈による一人歩きか、その見解が分かれるところだが、政治的批判性が明らかな英国の風刺画との比較を通して、天保期における江戸の人々が有した風刺の眼差しについて、その一端を捉えたい。
両作品は、［1］どちらも当時よく知られた画題を用いたパロディーである、［2］江戸とロンドンという都市生活に関わる問題が扱われている、［3］人間社会の中でイレギュラーな存在である妖怪やモンスターに擬えて集団を描いている、といった共通点を有しながら、［4］寓意の明瞭さに明らかな差がある、［5］妖怪またはモンスターに擬えられた人々への眼差しに温度差がある、といった相違点が見られる。これらの点に着目し、比較検討を行った。その結果、明瞭かつ辛辣な風刺で既得権益者を攻撃すると同時に、市民への問題提起をも行ったA Drop of London Waterに対し、「妖怪図」の寓意の曖昧さが浮き彫りになった。多くの模倣絵を生んだこの絵は、その後、幕末維新期の風刺画にも影響を与え、合戦絵や子供絵などと並んで一つのスタイルを形成してゆく。このことは、鑑賞者の問題への当事者意識や政治的批判性の希薄さ、そして判官贔屓とも言える鑑賞態度へと結びついた。
結論として、「妖怪図」及びその受容からは、その後の戊辰戦争、明治維新、そして自由民権運動へと繋がってゆく風刺精神の大衆的萌芽が見られる。本図は、テキスト読解を要さない錦絵を媒体としたことで、政権批判に繋がるような風刺が大衆化したと考えられる。その一方で、判じ物による風刺の裾野拡大は、風刺画の体裁を持ちながら、その実、主体的かつ長期的な目線での批判精神が希薄であるという問題点を孕んでいたといえよう。journal articl
