Two-year-olds use adults' but not peers' points
In the current study, 24- to 27-month-old children (N = 37) used pointing gestures in a cooperative object choice task with either peer or adult partners. When indicating the location of a hidden toy, children pointed equally accurately for adult and peer partners but more often for adult partners. When choosing from one of three hiding places, children used adults’ pointing to find a hidden toy significantly more often than they used peers’. In interaction with peers, children's choice behavior was at chance level. These results suggest that toddlers ascribe informative value to adults’ but not peers’ pointing gestures, and highlight the role of children's social expectations in their communicative development
Designing Interactive Music Systems with and for People with Dementia
In this paper, we outline the process applied in designing and developing an interactive and networked music system for people with dementia. We first describe the strategy we used to include both people with dementia and caretakers. As the symptoms of dementia vary greatly, we decided to address this diversity of needs. We describe the use-scenarios, which illustrate how people with dementia can gain access to curated selections of biographically meaningful music and take part in music therapy even if restricted mobility prevents their physical presence at sessions. Secondly, we focus on the structural and aesthetic requirements for the interaction design of tangible and screen-based user-interfaces. We conclude with issues of usability and levels of playfulness based on interactive prototypes that differ in complexity and form, and we share proposals for designing with and for dementia patients
Faceted Views of Varying Emphasis (FaVVEs)
Many datasets have multiple perspectives – for example space, time and description – and often analysts are required to study these multiple perspectives concurrently. This concurrent analysis becomes difficult when data are grouped and split into small multiples for comparison. A design challenge is thus to provide representations that enable multiple perspectives, split into small multiples, to be viewed simultaneously in ways that neither clutter nor overload. We present a design framework that allows us to do this. We claim that multi-perspective comparison across small multiples may be possible by superimposing perspectives on one another rather than juxtaposing those perspectives side-by-side. This approach defies conventional wisdom and likely results in visual and informational clutter. For this reason we propose designs at three levels of abstraction for each perspective. By flexibly varying the abstraction level, certain perspectives can be brought into, or out of, focus. We evaluate our framework through laboratory-style user tests. We find that superimposing, rather than juxtaposing, perspective views has little effect on performance of a low-level comparison task. We reflect on the user study and its design to further identify analysis situations for which our framework may be desirable. Although the user study findings were insufficiently discriminating, we believe our framework opens up a new design space for multi-perspective visual analysis

Documentation is very time consuming; conservators have to categorize photos, give detailed description of the procedures and justify decisions about materials. Every conservator delivers his/her own documentation to the respective monument administrations that archive it in their shelves, without any possibility to access them digitally. In this case, the access to already conducted procedures, as well as the provision of the knowledge about the methods and materials used are very difficult often almost impossible. The SemRes System provides conservators with semantic technologies in order to better structure and retrieve their knowledge and supports them in decision-making for conservation and conservation procedures
Bestandsvisualisierung in Bibliotheken
Bibliotheken stehen seit jeher vor der Aufgabe, große Datenmengen zu verwalten und diese den Nutzern zugänglich zu machen. Bestandsvisualisierungen bieten dazu neue Potenziale, diese Aufgabe zu bewältigen und die Informationsrecherche, Ergebnisdarstellung und -analyse bibliografischer Bestandsdaten zu optimieren. Der folgende Artikel zeigt anhand verschiedener Beispiele aus dem bibliothekarischen Kontext, dass Bestandsvisualisierungen in der Lage sind, Zusammenhänge darzustellen, explorative Suchstrategien zu fördern und Kontextualisierungen zu ermöglichen. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse aus der Analyse der Beispiele fließen anschließend in die Konzeption einer eigenen Visualisierung in Form eines bibliothekarischen Katalog-Interfaces
Fritzing
Today a growing community of DIY-practitioners, artists and designers are using microcontroller-based toolkits to express their concepts for digital artifacts by building them. However, as these prototypes are generally constructed using solder-free technologies, they are often fragile and unreliable. This means a huge burden of care and upkeep for these inventions when they are either exhibited or sold.
We present a software application called Fritzing which allows artists, designers and DIY-tinkerers to prepare their hardware inventions for production. Through an interface metaphor based on the typical workflow of the target group, Fritzing has proven its ability to provide useful support in the steps following the invention of an interactive artifact.
Fritzing serves also as a tool for documenting these interactive artifacts. As sharing of knowledge has been a driving force within this new DIY-movement, there is a need for a consistent and readable form of documentation which Fritzing can provide.
Fritzing has also proven to be a useful tool in teaching electronics to people without an engineering background
Development of new facades by combined modeling of thermal sounds and ventilation aspects at early design phases
Facades must meet with continuously increasing requirements concerning design quality and technical performance. It will be shown that neither extremely simplifying nor highly detailed simulation tools with complete geometrical representation really help to develop new facade types during the early stages of design. Due to simplified physical modelling, conceptual variations may not be adequately represented and this means that different properties cannot be seen. Detailed simulation programs provide proof - but in most cases only with regard to a single aspect of facade qualities – of whether a well defined set of parameters is already given and if an adequate representation is already integrated. This often prevents the perception of interdependencies and hinders the
development of ideas. Based on the author’s experience concerning simulation techniques and the process of facade consultancy services, a method with an adapted degree of abstraction was developed. Combined modelling of thermal, sound insulation and ventilation aspects during early design stages is described and a new multilayered facade is presented
A thermal information display for mobile applications
In this paper, we investigate possibilities and limitations of temperature change as a method for information display in mobile applications. While some widespread and well-recognized haptic displays such as force-feedback often trigger the user's immediate attention, we will focus on ambient strategies for tactile information display, that is, the display of gradual state changes in the user's periphery that do not unexpectedly interrupt her current tasks, but builds on the mind's ability for subliminal perception of environmental change instead [1, 2].
To this end, we present a series of prototypes of mobile devices that display ambient information by means of thermal change based on the thermo-electric effect [3]. In order to assess the expedience and feasibility of such a display, a series of user tests have been conducted with respect to both, the ability for thermal change recognition and a concrete application scenario for such a display
Der Beitrag der Psychoanalyse in der Ausbildung zum kompetenten Frühpädagogen
Die längst Überfällige Akademisierung des Erzieherinnenberufes birgt die Chance in sich, die Psychoanalyse in der Hochschule und in den pädagogischen Arbeitsfeldern zu etablieren. Ein Rückblick auf die Tradition der Psychoanalystischen Pädagogik der 1920er und 1930er Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts soll verdeutlichen, wie aktuelle bildungspolitische Themen (z.B. der Aufbau von Mütterberatungszentren) in psychoanalytischen Vorläuferprojekten wurzeln. In der Diskussion um die fachliche Ausgestaltung der neuen frühpädagogischen Studiengänge beteiligen sich auch die Psychoanalytiker. Sie können dazu beitragen, dass die zukünftigen Frühpädagogen ein fundiertes psychoanalytisches Wissen über die kindliche Entwicklung, über Selbstentwicklung und Intersubjektivität, über Risiken und Fehlentwicklungen erwerben und Handlungskompetenz gewinnen. Anhand des neu eingerichteten Studienganges > an der Fachhochschule Potsdam soll gezeigt werden, dass die Psychoanalyse einen solchen Studiengang mit einem ganz eigenen, attraktiven Profil ausstatten und auf diese Weise wieder einen Platz in Hochschulen einnehmen kann
EcoDM - Ökosystem Datenmanagement
Mit dem BMBF geförderten Verbundprojekt EcoDM (Förderkennzeichen 16DWWQP) wurde erforscht, welche Herausforderungen, Chancen und Hindernisse sich im Bereich des rasanten digitalen Datenwachstums ergeben und wie Rahmenbedingungen aussehen könnten, Daten systematisch und FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) nutzen und teilen zu können. Einen zentralen Teil der Untersuchung bildeten neben Landscape- und Gap-Analysen Leitfaden-gestützte Interviews mit Expert*innen aus den Bereichen Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Public Sector und Qualifizierung. Basierend auf den Projektergebnissen wurden Empfehlungen zur Förderung des Teilens und Nachnutzens von Daten entwickelt. Der vorliegende Report veröffentlicht die gesammelten Untersuchungsergebnisse gemeinsam mit den 31 abgeleiteten bereichsübergreifenden Empfehlungen und die Diskussion dieser Empfehlungen im Rahmen der RDA Deutschland Tagung 2022
