Becoming episodic : the development of objectivity
We argue that objectivity is acquired by learning to refer to particular situations, that is, by developing episodicity. This contrasts with the widespread idea that genericity is crucial in developing humans’ ability to conceive of an objective world. According to the collective intentionality account, objectivity is acquired by contrasting one’s particular perspective in the “here and now” with a generic group perspective on how things are generally. However, this line of argument rests on confusing two independent notions of genericity: social and worldly genericity. Holding these two notions apart shows that there is no coherent developmental route from episodicity to objectivity via genericity. In effect, the collective intentionality account presupposes objectivity. Alternatively, episodicity may develop by enculturation into the common practice of spatial-indexical use. This ability establishes an initial, socially shared spatiotemporal reference system comprising the basis for objectivity
The CLEF-2023 CheckThat! Lab: Checkworthiness, Subjectivity, Political Bias, Factuality, and Authority
The five editions of the CheckThat! lab so far have focused on the main tasks of the information verification pipeline: check-worthiness, evidence retrieval and pairing, and verification. The 2023 edition of the lab zooms into some of the problems and - for the first time - it offers five tasks in seven languages (Arabic, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish): Task 1 asks to determine whether an item, text or a text plus an image, is check-worthy; Task 2 requires to assess whether a text snippet is subjective or not; Task 3 looks for estimating the political bias of a document or a news outlet; Task 4 requires to determine the level of factuality of a document or a news outlet; and Task 5 is about identifying authorities that should be trusted to verify a contended claim

“Stranger Things - Prototyping Inconvenience”
There is a prevalent obsession in design-oriented disciplines and in the technological industry with comfort, efficiency, smoothness and smartness, which relates to a trend of envisioning super-convenient futures. In this paper, we raise convenience as a topic for inquiry within critical design practice and affirm the importance of questioning the broad implications of “design for convenience” in design research and design education. To this end, we investigate the potential of Inconvenient Design as a discursive and critical approach. By combining prototyping with tactics of critical and speculative design, we build a methodology that aims to push designers beyond their “comfortable human perspective”, engaging them to question current practices in design and to think about alternatives. This methodology was the starting point of “Stranger Things – Prototyping Inconvenience”, a design course held at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. The key insights and reflections from this course are summarized and illustrated through the results of the iterative prototyping sessions as well as the final projects completed by the graduate and undergraduate students
Visualizing Large Spatial Time Series Data on Mobile Devices
This paper introduces an approach for visualizing large spatial time series data sets on mobile devices. The HeatTile system (Meier et al. 2014) is used and extended with a progressive loading approach, the stream approach. By combining those two approaches, this study aimed to overcome the performance and bandwidth limitations inherent to mobile devices. This chapter focuses on the technological advantages of the presented approach in a performance comparison with other common approaches. Furthermore, an animated time series visualization is introduced, as well as an interface designed specifically for the presented method in order to emphasize the advantages of the approach. To further highlight the possible applications of the method, two real-world use cases are presented
Herzfassen
Herzfassen is a self-contained kinetic object that uses physical computing and biometric data to provide a highly aesthetic and sensual experience while still having the outer appearance of an ordinary everyday object. A metal bowl filled with water visualizes the human heartbeat through vibration and according patterns in the water surface. The title Herzfassen derives from the german expression for 'to take heart' thus hints to the haptic and emotional experience with the object.
This paper describes aim and design of the piece, comprising construction, technical function, as well as the interaction cycle respectively the object's dramaturgy. Further, it reports on audience's joyful and emotional experiences with the object within past exhibitions as display and use hence human contact is the main purpose of Herzfassen
Is it Useful to Support Users with Lexical Resources?
Current search engines are used for retrieving relevant documents from the huge amount of data available and have become an essential tool for the majority of Web users. Standard search engines do not consider semantic information that can help in recognizing the relevance of a document with respect to the meaning of a query. In this paper, we present our system architecture and a first user study, where we show that the use of semantics can help users in finding relevant information, filtering it ad facilitating quicker access to data
