The CLEF-2022 CheckThat! Lab on Fighting the COVID-19 Infodemic and Fake News Detection
No full textThe fifth edition of the CheckThat! Lab is held as part of the 2022 Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting various factuality tasks in seven languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Spanish, and Turkish. Task 1 focuses on disinformation related to the ongoing COVID-19 infodemic and politics, and asks to predict whether a tweet is worth fact-checking, contains a verifiable factual claim, is harmful to the society, or is of interest to policy makers and why. Task 2 asks to retrieve claims that have been previously fact-checked and that could be useful to verify the claim in a tweet. Task 3 is to predict the veracity of a news article. Tasks 1 and 3 are classification problems, while Task 2 is a ranking one

No full textModellierungen des Menschen aus Sicht der Rechtswissenschaften sind maßgeblich geprägt von der Bedeutung der unveräußerlichen Würde des Individuums. Daraus leiten sich wiederum Vorstellungen und Leitbilder ab, die die Freiheitsräume der Einzelperson im digitalen Kontext sichern, aber auch auf die gesellschaftliche Ebene hinausreichen und etwa die Mitwirkung in demokratischen Prozessen tangieren. Im „digitalen Alltag“ steht freilich im Zentrum rechtlicher Überlegungen, Transparenz und Rechtsschutz des Verbrauchers zu gewährleisten. Neue, faszinierende Möglichkeiten moderner Technologien verlangen dabei nach kreativen Lösungen im Sinne einer Kultur des Ermöglichens – etwa um digitale Unterstützungsangebote für Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen in transparenter und rechtssicherer Weise umzusetzen

No full textTransdisciplinary research processes often involve the integration of knowledge and stakeholders from various backgrounds. Here, we introduce the story of the research project AMA (A Mindset for the Anthropocene) on the role of mindsets in the context of sustainability and present an interactive visualization tool that we developed for stakeholder mapping and research communication. Through this platform, we provide access and navigation to everyone interested in this field of research and we have simultaneously created a channel for all stakeholders to co-create content. Here, we describe the design and functionalities of the platform and the participatory way it was developed as part of our stakeholder engagement. We discuss upon how such a design allows for reflection of potential biases in transdisciplinary research processes and simultaneously catalyzing self-organization in stakeholder networks
Arch Action Model for the structural assessment of existing prestressed concrete bridges
No full textStructural assessments of existing older prestressed concrete bridges according to the currently applicable standards and guidelines in Germany generally reveal significant deficiencies in shear reinforcement. Large-scale tests within the scope of research activities commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) were carried out at TU Dortmund University to analyze the shear load-bearing behavior of continuous prestressed concrete beams in more detail. The Arch Action Model (AAM) was derived from the Simplified Arch Action Model (SAAM) to provide a possible analysis method for determining shear contribution from concrete. Thus, the shear capacity of prestressed beams can be determined in a more realistic manner than using the truss model underlying the current state of standardization. The paper at hand provides information and explanations about the SAAM and AAM with regard to their application to real-world structures for structural bridge assessments
Falling Men : Images of the Falling Human in Art and Photography
No full textFalling is a metaphor and an image for a lot of possible human disasters like the fall of the angels, Adam’s fall in sin etc. but also falling prices on the stock market. But there is a harsh contrast between the beauty of the image of a (pictorially) suspended fall and the implicit crash which is rarely been shown. The images of falling individuals make clear to us the utter vulnerability of the possible dead. Images of falling humans are discussed in the context of photography- and media theory. Against the Background of historical representation of falling men as for example in Hendrick Goltzius Series ‘The Four Disgracers’, photographic images are in the center of the examination: the paradigmatic image of the ‘Falling Man’ (WTC 09/11) but also contemporary photographers/artists like Denis Darzacq, Gelatin and Cyprian Muresan
