    No full text
Background: The adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) is transforming supply chains in the European Union, affecting logistical performance, economic integration and sustainability. This study examines the extent to which ICT adoption affects logistics efficiency in the 27 EU Member States. Methods: Using panel data from the World Bank and UNCTAD (2008–2018), the analysis applies the Arellano–Bond Generalized Method of Moments estimator to assess the impact of ICT indicators, broadband penetration, mobile connectivity and digital skills on logistics performance. GDP per capita and trade openness are included as control variables. Results: The results show that a 1% increase in ICT usage correlates with a 0.12-point increase in the Logistics Performance Index. Higher ICT usage leads to more efficient supply chains, lower costs and higher customer satisfaction. However, there are still differences in digitalization: the ICT usage rate of SMEs is 28% in Bulgaria and 27% in Romania, compared to the EU average of 59%. Conclusions: Bridging the digital divide requires targeted investments in ICT infrastructure, harmonized regulatory frameworks and stronger public–private cooperation to foster regional economic cohesion. This study provides policy recommendations to drive digital transformation, strengthen the resilience of logistics and improve the sustainability of supply chains in the EU

    No full text
Interest in ports and their impact on regional development can be traced back to the early days of industrialization and world trade, but has become more important in recent decades due to changes in global economic patterns, technological advances and the increasing importance of sustainable development. Although the economic impact of ports has been explored in the literature, there is a lack of studies dedicated to analyzing the popularity of this topic in academic papers. This research aims to fill this gap by employing a bibliometric analysis to capture the evolution of academic work on the relationship between ports and regional development and to identify research patterns and emerging areas of interest. Bibliometric analysis and visualization tools are used for the analysis. Based on the Web of Science Core Collection database, the most important research areas, journals and author keywords are identified. The results of the analysis are visualized with the VOSviewer software. The findings show that the topic is popular and that there is a growing trend in publications on the relationship between ports and regional development. Authors from port countries dominate the field. In addition, major publishers such as Elsevier and Taylor & Francis publish the most on this topic. The results of the co-occurrence analysis show the dominance of the keywords ports, management, port performance, logistics, which indicates that these keywords are of central importance for the research area under investigation

Uz prikaz vodećih tvrtki i istraživačkih centara (IBM, Google, D-Wave, Rigetti), raspravlja se o izazovima poput dekoherencije, skalabilnosti i korekcije pogrešaka. Quantum computing represents a revolutionary breakthrough in information processing, based on the principles of quantum mechanics such as superposition, entanglement and quantum interference. Unlike classical computers that use bits, quantum computers use qubits – units that can exist in multiple states at the same time – enabling parallel processing of a large number of combinations and significantly accelerating certain calculations. The paper provides a detailed overview of the fundamental principles of quantum computing, the structure of a quantum processor (QPU), key algorithms such as Shorov and Groverov, and the current state of development of quantum systems. Applications in science, cryptography, optimization and artificial intelligence are also analyzed, with a special focus on the possibilities that quantum technology offers for the maritime industry, including route optimization, predictive maintenance and quantum security. In addition to a presentation of leading companies and research centers (IBM, Google, D-Wave, Rigetti), challenges such as decoherence, scalability and error correction are discussed. In conclusion, the paper indicates the potential of quantum computing to significantly change the way the most complex problems in industry and science are solved inthenear future

With the development of passenger cruise ships and their increasing popularity, and at the same time taking into account that today's cruise ships are "small cities", the need for more efficient and economical air conditioning systems on cruise ships has been imposed. With the development of technology and with the construction of increasingly large ships, and the fact that air conditioning systems are the second largest energy consumers (right after propulsion), it has become of great importance for shipping companies to improve the efficiency of air conditioning systems in order to save energy, which directly affects the preservation of the marine environment. Acceptance and use of new technologies in air conditioning are a significant factor in reducing the emission of exhaust gases and CO2 into the atmosphere, and subsequently have a positive effect on the preservation of the marine environment. With regards to today's market requirements, classification and environmental norms that are enforced every day, it is extremely important that the air conditioning system works in the most efficient mode possible with a use of less possible energy. Keywords: passenger cruise ship, air conditioning system, efficiency, energy saving

Air masses and weather fronts represent basic components of marine meteorology, with direct consequences for navigation safety. Air masses influenced by geographical area and surface quality, differ in temperature, relative humidity and system, which directly affects air stability and thus weather conditions. Boundaries between air masses, known as weather fronts, bring changes in weather conditions, including change of wind, precipitation, and reduced visibility. Understanding these phenomena is essential for navigation, route planning, and avoiding potential hazards. This paper analyses impacts of air masses and fronts on meteorological conditions and offers guidelines for their monitoring and adaptation, with special emphasis on application in maritime practice to increase the safety and efficiency of navigation

Profiling Students by Perceived Immersion: Insights from VR Engine Room Simulator Trials in Maritime Higher Education

    No full text
Research on students’ immersive experiences with fully immersive virtual reality (VR) technologies is extensively documented across diverse educational settings; however, in maritime higher education, it remains relatively underrepresented. Therefore, by using segmentation analysis, this study aims to profile maritime engineering students at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Rijeka, by perceived immersion (PIMM) within a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) VR engine room simulator and to explore differences in their perceived learning benefits (PLBs), future behavioural intentions (FBI), and satisfaction (SAT) with the HMD-VR experience. The sample comprised 84 participants who engaged in preliminary HMD-VR engine room simulator trials. A non-hierarchical (K-mean) cluster analysis, combined with the Elbow method, identified two distinct and homogeneous groups: Immersionists and Conformists. The results of an independent sample t-test indicated that Immersionists exhibited significantly higher scores regarding perceived learning benefits, future behavioural intentions, and overall satisfaction than Conformists. The study results underscore the significance of understanding students’ subjective perception of immersion in the implementation and further development of fully immersive VR technologies within maritime education and training (MET) curricula. However, as the study is based on a specific case within a particular educational context, the result may not directly apply to the broader student population
