In a rapidly changing world, students must develop their global competence, which is the ability to understand, act and manage global and intercultural affairs. However, there is still no systematic description in the literature of how educational institutions should act to contribute to the development of this competence in their students. This study attempts to discover those organizational and teaching practices that foster an optimal climate for the development of global competence, based on a case study methodology from a center that is a reference in this field. Through qualitative research, the practices that have proven effective are identified. It is concluded that intelligent leadership that encourages both personalized learning and action-taking within a culturally diverse environment is key to global competence.2023-2
Green hydrogen mitigates the EU’s energy dependence and leads to climate neutrality in 2050.
In order to achieve the climate neutrality objective pursued by the European Green Deal, approved by the Commission in December 2019, in July 2020 it approved a hydrogen strategy to accelerate the development of renewable hydrogen and achieve a carbon-neutral economy. Hydrogen is a key element in this transition since it can be used as a raw material, fuel or energy carrier and also as energy storage, and therefore, it constitutes a technology that will contribute in a very significant way to achieve the objective that in 2050 Europe will be a zone with zero pollution. In the proposal to amend the Directive on energy taxation, the Commission underlines that taxation contributes to achieving the objectives proposed in the REPowerEU and the European Green Deal. Specifically, with regard to renewable hydrogen, the application of the minimum tax rate of 0.15 EUR/GJ is foreseen, a tax rate lower than the reference rate. This lower tax rate is applicable, due to the potential contribution that renewable hydrogen can make to achieve the EU´s long-awaited climate neutrality by 2050.2022-2
Semantic Segmentation of Fish and Underwater Environments Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks and Learned Active Contours
The conservation of marine resources requires constant monitoring of the underwater environment by researchers. For this purpose, visual automated monitoring systems are of great interest, especially those that can describe the environment using semantic segmentation based on deep learning. Although they have been successfully used in several applications, such as biomedical ones, obtaining optimal results in underwater environments is still a challenge due to the heterogeneity of water and lighting conditions, and the scarcity of labeled datasets. Even more, the existing deep learning techniques oriented to semantic segmentation only provide low resolution results, lacking the enough spatial details for a high performance monitoring. To address these challenges, a combined loss function based on the active contour theory and level set methods is proposed to refine the spatial segmentation resolution and quality. To evaluate the method, a new underwater dataset with pixel annotations for three classes (fish, seafloor, and water) was created using images from publicly accessible datasets like SUIM, RockFish, and DeepFish. The performance of architectures of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), such as UNet and DeepLabV3+, trained with different loss functions (cross entropy, dice, and active contours) was compared, finding that the proposed combined loss function improved the segmentation results by around 3%, both in the metric Intercept Over Union (IoU) as in Hausdorff Distance (HD).2022-2
Decision-making associated with the realization of an engineering project is a necessary activity for its progress. The designer is therefore concerned about the material, economic and social consequences that may arise as a result of the action chosen. Thus, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is a branch of operational research concerned with finding the optimal solution in complex scenarios involving conflicting objectives and factors. The present work studies the best location for the installation of a solar photovoltaic plant for self-consumption without surplus in a combined cycle thermal power plant. This photovoltaic installation will generate the electrical energy necessary to supply the effluent treatment plant of the power plant in its normal operating regime. Four alternative locations are analyzed, and the best solution is determined considering factors such as expandability, ease of access, conductor losses, annual production, etc., by means of different MCDM techniques. It is also compared if the same solution could be reached by performing only a pros and cons analysis of each alternative.2023-2

Use of Gamification to Approach the Algebraic Language and Equations in 1st Grade of Secondary Education
Active methodologies, as innovative agents, are becoming more and more frequent in education, but they
are not a majority. However, it is a good resource to adapt the educational system to the current society
based on knowledge and information.
This article shows a useful and effective tool to connect with the needs and interests of students through an active methodology. The proposal, a gamification (teaching-learning methodology based on the mechanics of games), approaches the students of 1st grade of secondary education to the algebraic language and equations, combining cooperative learning activities.
Working through gamification means a higher academic performance, an increase in motivation and the
development of a positive attitude allowing, in addition, to attend to diversity in the classroom and the use
of ICT promoting collaborative work.
Gamification, based on the use of ICT, facilitates the acquisition of knowledge in a more attractive way,
favoring their performance.UDIMA2023-2
Programa Operativo FEDER2022-2
