Victory Elusive: American Failures to Triumph in the Cold War Era

    No full text
This thesis analyzes the shifting American conception of “triumph” from Roosevelt to Eisenhower, focusing on Truman and Eisenhower’s struggles to reconcile Cold War imperatives with the nation’s self-image as the “free world’s” guardian. Postwar victories sanctified this role, but thermonuclear threats, Soviet expansion, and decolonization complicated traditional notions of victory. Truman reframed Roosevelt’s liberal internationalism through containment, yet Korea exposed the paradox of pursuing decisive triumph in limited wars. Eisenhower’s “New Look” embraced nuclear deterrence, acknowledging the futility of total war, though crises like Formosa and Lebanon revealed lingering ambiguities. Throughout, American exceptionalism—the belief in a providential mandate to defend democracy—clashed with geopolitical realities, obscuring local complexities and militarizing ideological struggles. By tracing policy debates, crises, and technological upheavals, this study illuminates how “triumph” evolved from postwar idealism to nuclear-era pragmatism, reflecting deeper tensions between power, morality, and historical destiny in U.S. statecraft

Supportive Systems for Cognitive Health and Dementia : Survey of technology and the role of standards

    Get PDF
This report examines technology-based products and services designed to support independent, healthy living, with the goal of identifying best practices in product development and features, uncovering gaps in current offerings, and providing guidance on the use of relevant standards and development needs for new standards or standards frameworks for products. The primary focus is on solutions that enable Aging-in-Place (AiP) for Persons Living with Dementia (PLWD), as this represents the most developed area within supportive living technologies. The products reviewed are a representative sample of those commercially available as of August 2023. The report includes summaries of two product analysis reviews

The Role of AI in Software Development: Industry Practices, Security Implications, and Developer Perceptions

    Get PDF
The rise of large language models (LLMs) and AI tools like ChatGPT is transforming software development by enhancing workflows through code generation, autocompletion, and debugging. While these tools promise increased productivity, their integration raises concerns about security, privacy, and reliability. This thesis investigates the use of AI tools in software development, focusing on three questions: how professional software developers are using AI tools in the industry (RQ1), their impact on developers' security practices (RQ2), and perceptions of AI tools among software development professionals (RQ3). Through an exploratory interview study and a security evaluation of AI-generated code, this research reveals both the benefits and potential risks of adopting AI tools. Findings indicate diverse uses of these tools and highlight concerns about their impact on code security. The study emphasizes the need for awareness of security implications when integrating AI tools into development workflows, balancing innovation with caution
