    Calladita no te ves más bonita: Cultural Practices within Latina Women’s Advocacy | POSTER

    Historically, Latina women-led advocacy groups have faced significant underrepresentation within academia, leading to an erasure of their experiences and contributions. For this reason, it is imperative to take on a thorough analysis that respects the nuances of Latina women\u27s advocacy. In recognizing how their identities enable them to bring about meaningful change, we see the Latina woman\u27s role as an agent of advocacy. Therefore, this exploratory research study investigates the incorporation of cultural practices within two Latina-led organizations in Chicago, Amigas Latinas, and Mujeres Latinas En Acción, from the mid-20th century to the present. I employ Anita Tijerina Revilla\u27s Muxerista framework to perform a culturally sensitive textual analysis of oral histories, ephemera, photographs, and other material culture to highlight areas of advocacy that appear instructive for other contemporary social justice causes. In the end, it is within the realm of social justice and reclamation of cultural practices that Latinas oppose systemic discrimination in a civic conscious, inclusive, supportive manner that works to reshape who and what we consider in our conception of advocacy

    Globular clusters provide valuable insight into the formation of galaxies and stars. As some of the oldest structures in the Milky Way Galaxy, the stars that make up clusters are some of the oldest witnesses to the formation of our Galaxy, and in some cases, the Universe itself. Additionally, clusters are an excellent source of X-ray information, and the positions of X-ray sources tend to correlate with the positions of globular clusters. As such, studying globular clusters is an excellent way to study galactic compact X-ray binary stars. We present a study of the globular cluster NGC 6266, and perform point-spread photometry on identified stars within using Hubble ACS data in the F435W, F625W, and F658N filters. After measuring HST magnitudes, we have correlated the positions of the identified stars with the position of X-ray sources observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and identified candidate optical counterparts of compact X-ray binaries in the cluster. Using the combined datasets, we have created color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. We present the optical magnitudes and colors of the candidate optical counterparts of 32 X-ray sources, composed of 7 millisecond pulsars, 12 cataclysmic variables, 2 low-mass X-ray binaries, 10 active binaries, 1 black hole, and 6 background objects. 8 fields contain only saturated objects and main-sequence stars, resulting in no classification, although one can be identified as an LMXB system due to its X-ray luminosity and softness without an optical component identification

    Isolated & Impulsive: A Quality Improvement Pilot Survey of the Perceived ICU Nurse Workload Implementing the A2F Care Bundle for Isolated COVID-19 Patients with Delirium.

    Background: Existing research focused on A2F Care Bundle efficacy to optimize patient care and improve patient outcomes among ICU patients. Perceived workflow evaluation has been validated for healthcare task analysis endorsed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. A needs assessment was identified to evaluate nursing challenges with the A2F Care Bundle interventions, inform allocation where support and resources may be necessary when providing patient care for isolated patients with COVID-19 delirium. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived workload of ICU nurses when implementing the A2F Care Bundle among isolated COVID-19 patients with delirium. Method: This quality improvement initiative utilized a descriptive cross-sectional online survey, assessing perceived workload and its components’ impact upon ICU nurses with specific demographic factors when implementing six A2F Care Bundle interventions. Results: Although no statistical significance was found in perceived workload between shift types nor between ranges in years of experience, there was low to moderate statistical evidence between interventions with specific workload components. Early mobility produced the highest perceived workload especially among day shift nurses with physical demand being most contributory. Night shift nurses yielded a high perceived workload from choice of sedation most influenced by effort. Spontaneous awakening and breathing trials were most affected by effort but yielded an overall low perceived workload. Among nurses with the lowest range of experience, family engagement yielded the second highest perceived workload with the highest mental demand, however scores both declined in higher ranges of experience. While pain management yielded the lowest perceived workload, temporal demand was high. Delirium management attributed frustration and effort towards high perceived workload levels. Conclusion: Unit-specific interpretations of any deficient perceived workload scores may be associated with possible clinical implications in A2F Care Bundle nursing practice and strategies to mitigate its delivery

    Virtual Reality images as a tool in hotel promotions: is it effective and worth investment?

    This report examines how traditional photos compare to two different types of virtual reality (VR) images (static and 360°) when used as promotional tools for hotels. An experimental study by Slevitch et al.(2022), which utilized multiple types of measures, served as the foundation for the recommendations. The results showed that static VR images performed the same way as traditional photos, however the 360° VR images had a more positive impact on participants’ emotional responses and were more engaging than other images. This suggests that 360° VR images are better for hotel promotions, especially when initial impressions, such as interest and excitement are the main concern. The results also showed that using physiological measurements (i.e. fNIR, skin conductivity, and eye tracking devices) can give a more accurate picture of how people feel about something than just asking them in a survey

    Instrument Building for Detection of Triplet Signal from Quinolinone Molecules

    Conjugated organic molecules such as the 2-quinolinone family can be used as energy-donor molecules in photocatalysis because of their light absorbing and energy transmitting qualities. Good donor molecules have triplet excited states that are useful for photocatalysis due to their long lifetimes. The goal of this research was to build a near-infrared emission spectroscopy instrument to observe a triplet signal in a set of five previously synthesized 2-quinolinone molecules. A near-infrared absorbance instrument was built successfully with accurate measurements; however, there was no detection of the desired triplet emission signal

    Spatiotemporal dynamics of ticks and tick-borne disease at NEON sites across a sub-continental scale

    Tick-borne diseases in humans such as Lyme disease cases in the United States have doubled between 2004 and 2016. Understanding the dynamics of infectious diseases has long been of interest for ecologists. Tick and tick-borne diseases are influenced by temperature and precipitation at local scales, indirectly through mast seeding in forest trees which increases the abundance of tick hosts (e.g., small mammals), as well as direct effects on survival. Most tick studies occur at local scales that comprise only a small part of their range. The aim of my thesis is to characterize spatiotemporal dynamics of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the eastern United States. I used datasets from National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) from 2014 to 2021 to quantify the level of synchrony in tick dynamics in seven NEON Domains, representing different ecoregions, and spanning distances up to 2,000 km. I used multiple regression matrices (MRM) to examine patterns of synchrony across sites in regional to sub-continental patterns of host-seeking ticks, and climatic variation. I found that spatial synchrony in temporal patterns of nymph abundance for both Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes scapularis declined with increasing distance between NEON sites. Weather variables associated with the spatiotemporal dynamics and key predictors of ticks and tick-borne diseases vary between the two species. A. americanum was driven by lags in July temperature differences, ∆T3 (difference in mean July temperatures in year t-3 and t-4) and ∆T4 (difference in mean July temperatures in year t-4 and t-5); and January conditions impacted tick survival for I. scapularis. The proportion of nymph-infected ticks was explained by environmental factors for the genus A. americanum. Whereas, for I. scapularis proportion of infected nymphs we were unable to explain. Nymph abundance and tick-borne diseases could be understood by identifying environmental variables influencing tick spatiotemporal patterns, allowing for potential prediction of a future tick outbreak

    Thinking Style as Input: Information Seeking and Processing

    In this dissertation, I propose that thinking style and cognitive load are associated with information-processing. Analytic thinkers focus on focal objects, whereas holistic thinkers focus on the relation between focal objects and peripheral objects. In addition, cognitive load also increases people’s heuristic use in information-processing. Across two studies, I investigated the relationship between thinking style and information-processing, moderated by time pressure (Study 1) or accuracy motivation (Study 2). Results showed opposite patterns of what past literature has demonstrated. Relatively holistic thinkers were less likely to search for additional suspect cues with higher levels of confidence compared to relatively analytic thinkers. Cognitive load motivated information seeking but decreased levels of confidence. Together, these studies create a mixed relationship among thinking style, cognitive load, and information-processing, implying that individual and cultural differences in information-processing might depend on the type of decision-making
