    The Dangerous Effect of Entitlement on White Nationalist Ideology

    Within the past few years, White nationalism has been on the rise due to societal changes and feelings of uncertainty for White Americans\u27 perceptions of their racial group’s future. As a result, many have speculated what may be a factor in this rise. Previously it has been found that having a high White identity is associated with White nationalist ideologies. However, White identity may not be enough to drive White nationalist ideologies and the violence that can follow. Feelings of entitlement towards status, preferential treatment, and resources may contribute to White nationalist ideologies based on beliefs of superiority and deservedness over other groups. Furthermore, when expectations associated with their racial identity are not met, extreme violence may occur to “right” the “wrong” against their racial group and identity. This dissertation will explore how entitlement influences White identity which can contribute to White nationalist ideologies and intergroup violence

    A Case for Brandeisian Federalism: The ERISA Preemption Clause and State Health Care Reform

    The United States spends more for health care per capita than any other country in the world. Despite spending more, the United States has weaker health care outcomes than other similarly developed countries. This fact alone makes health care an important subject for policy reform. Given the current partisan gridlock in Congress, it is difficult to foresee any significant legislation in the area of health care reform at the federal level in the near future. As a result, Congress has allocated major health care reform efforts to the states. However, ERISA stands as a huge obstacle to state health care reform due to the Supreme Court’s broad interpretation of its preemption clause. This Note provides a critique of ERISA’s preemption clause through a Brandeisian theory of federalism and argues that ERISA can serve its purpose of protecting workers\u27 pensions while also allowing states to be laboratories for health care policy

    EXPERIENCES OF LATINX NURSES DURING COVID-19

    Purpose: This study aimed to examine the experiences of Latinx nurses during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: A primary analysis of qualitative interview data was used for this study. Methods: Data analysis included thematic network analysis to identify main themes experienced by 20 Latinx nurses. The previously collected interview data were interviews conducted during May to September 2020. Formal coding of the interview data was conducted utilizing Dedoose cloud-based software. Study participant characteristics were tabulated using SPSS 27. Findings: Study participants shared descriptions of their experiences during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Five main themes emerged, including (1) connection to patients’ personal touch and empathy, (2) connection to Latinx nurses, (3) connection to family and friends, (4) connection to food as care, and (5) coping (Figure 1). Within the theme of coping, the subthemes of (5.1) faith, (5.2) maladaptive behaviors, and (5.3) self-care activities emerged. Conclusion: These experiences can help shape the pathway to be better prepared for any emergency or future pandemic. The healthcare field will benefit from listening to the voices of nurses that provided the best care under a time of uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical Relevance: The findings serve to fill an important gap in history during the COVID-19 pandemic, where minorities were disproportionally affected

    Increasing Anesthesia Bar Code Medication Administration Scanning Compliance

    Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether the multimodal implementation of visual aids in anesthesia drug drawers, dissemination of virtual reminders through email and scheduling software, and alteration of the barcode scanner location to a more convenient location will improve barcode medication administration (BCMA) compliance. Design: This study was a time series design study utilizing a retrospective chart review. Methods: The data collection points included pre- vs. post-intervention, anesthesia provider type, medication type (ephedrine or phenylephrine), and whether the barcode was scanned or not. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression analysis were performed. Findings: The Chi-squared tests indicated that the type of anesthesia providers (p\u3c0.0001), type of medication (p=0.012), and pre- vs. post-intervention (p\u3c0.0001) were all significant factors associated with barcode scanning compliance of anesthesia medications. BCMA scanning compliance increased by 28.3% from pre- to post-intervention. The logistic regression showed that certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) were more likely to comply with barcode scanning of anesthesia medications than physician anesthesiologists. There were no significant differences between student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) and physician anesthesiologists regarding the scanning rate. In the context of medication type, phenylephrine was 1.48 times more likely to be scanned than ephedrine. Conclusion: A multimodal intervention including various visual reminders and a location change of the barcode reader increased BCMA compliance. Institutions should implement strategies and policies to reduce medication errors. Continuous professional development regarding the compliance of BCMA technology is essential to reduce anesthesia medication error

    Code generation based on inference and controlled natural language input

    Over time the level of abstraction embodied in programming languages has continued to grow. Paradoxically, most programming languages still require programmers to conform to the language\u27s rigid constructs. These constructs have been implemented in the name of efficiency for the computer. However, the continual increase in computing power allows us to consider techniques not so limited. To this end, we have created CABERNET, a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) based approach to program creation. CABERNET allows programmers to use a simple outline-based syntax. This syntax enables increased programmer efficiency. CNLs have previously been used to document requirements. We have taken this approach beyond the typical application of creating requirements documents to creating functional programs. Using heuristics and inference to analyze and determine the programmer\u27s intent, the CABERNET toolchain can create functional mobile applications. This approach allows programs to align with how humans think rather than how computers process information. Using customizable templates, a CABERNET application can be processed to run on multiple run-time environments. Since processing a CABERNET program file results in a native application program, performance is maintained. This research explores whether a CNL-based programming tool can provide a readable, flexible, extensible, and easy-to-learn development methodology. To answer this question, we compared sample applications created in Swift, SwiftUI, and a prototype of the CABERNET toolchain. The CABERNET implementations were consistently shorter than those produced in the other two languages. In addition, users surveyed consistently found the CABERNET samples easier to understand
