Revisiting Projection-based Data Transfer for Cross-Lingual Named Entity Recognition in Low-Resource Languages
Cross-lingual Named Entity Recognition (NER) leverages knowledge transfer between languages to identify and classify named entities, making it particularly useful for low-resource languages. We show that the data-based cross-lingual transfer method is an effective technique for cross-lingual NER and can outperform multi-lingual language models for low-resource languages. This paper introduces two key enhancements to the annotation projection step in cross-lingual NER for low-resource languages. First, we explore refining word alignments using back-translation to improve accuracy. Second, we present a novel formalized projection approach of matching source entities with extracted target candidates. Through extensive experiments on two datasets spanning 57 languages, we demonstrated that our approach surpasses existing projection-based methods in low-resource settings. These findings highlight the robustness of projection-based data transfer as an alternative to model-based methods for cross-lingual named entity recognition in low-resource languages
An Annotated Error Corpus for Esperanto
This paper presents and evaluates a new multi-genre error corpus for (written) Esperanto, EspEraro, building on both learner, news and internet data and covering both ordinary spelling errors and real-word errors such as grammatical and word choice errors. Because the corpus has been annotated not only for errors, error types and corrections, but also with Constraint Grammar (CG) tags for part-of-speech, inflection, affixation, syntactic function, dependency and semantic class, it allows users to linguistically contextualize errors and to craft and test CG rules aiming at the recognition and/or correction of the various error types covered in the corpus. The resource was originally created for regression-testing a newly developed spell- and grammar checker, and contains about 75,000 tokens (~ 4,000 sentences), with 3,330 tokens annotated for one or more errors and a combined correction suggestion. We discuss the different error types and evaluate their weight in the corpus. Where relevant, we explain the role of Constraint Grammar (CG) in the identification and correction of the individual error types
Beyond a Means to an End: A Case Study in Building Phonotactic Corpora for Central Australian Languages
Linguistic datasets are essential across fields: computational linguists use them for NLP development, theoretical linguists for statistical arguments supporting hypotheses about language, and documentary linguists for preserving examples and aiding grammatical descriptions. Transforming raw data (e.g., recordings or dictionaries) into structured forms (e.g., tables) requires non-trivial decisions within processing pipelines. This paper highlights the importance of these processes in understanding linguistic systems. Our contributions include: (1) an interactive dashboard for four central Australian languages with custom filters, and (2) demonstrating how data processing decisions influence measured outcomes
Empathy vs Neutrality: Designing and Evaluating a Natural Chatbot for the Healthcare Domain
As lifestyle-related diseases rise due to unhealthy habits such as smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and alcohol consumption, the role of Conversational AI in healthcare is increasingly significant. This study provides an empirical study on the design and evaluation of a natural and intuitive healthcare chatbot, specifically focusing on the impact of empathetic responses on user experience regarding lifestyle changes. Findings reveal a strong preference for the empathetic chatbot, with results showing statistical significance (p <0.001), highlighting the importance of empathy in enhancing user interaction with healthcare chatbots
Introduction of an e-voting system in Azerbaijan: readiness of citizens and government
Citizen-centric public services are currently a popular subject of discussion. E-voting services are increasingly popular. However, academic research has given relatively little attention to this phenomenon due to its recent emergence in Azerbaijan. The issue of citizens' and government readiness to accept such services remains unexplored in Azerbaijan. Government and citizens' acceptance is crucial for the successful implementation of personalized public service provision. This thesis investigates government and citizens' readiness for e-voting services. This study seeks to establish the preparedness of government and citizens for e-voting services and determine the primary factors that affect it. The author queries whether Azerbaijan's citizens and government are prepared for the implementation of an electronic voting system. When it comes to the readiness of Azerbaijani citizens for electronic voting, it is approached from the perspective of their level of technological readiness and trust in electronic services. In the context of the Azerbaijani government's readiness, legal, political, and IT infrastructure readiness issues were considered. A comprehensive analysis of literature on technology, politics, legal, social, infrastructure preparedness was conducted. The author employed a qualitative research method by administering interviews to collect data. The interviews yielded valuable insights towards achieving the objective of the master thesis and addressing the research question.
Based on the analysis conducted on the basis of the research work, it was determined that the citizens and the government of Azerbaijan are partially ready for electronic voting. There is a need for a more thorough analysis of the readiness of Azerbaijani citizens for the social perspective. There is also a problem with the readiness of the government in the political context and serious reforms are needed in this area.https://www.ester.ee/record=b5733971*es
Patsientide religiooniga seotud vajadused õendusprotsessis: religioosse heaolu toetamise võimalusi
Magistritöö „Patsientide religioossed vajadused õendusprotsessis: võimalused religioosse heaolu toetamiseks” eesmärgiks on välja selgitada patsientide religiooniga seotud vajadused õendusprotsessi raames ning uurida, kuidas on võimalik neid vajadusi toetada. Uuringu kvantitatiivne osa annab ülevaate õdede hinnangutest patsientide religiooniga seotud õendustegevustele aastatel 1999, 2009 ja 2021 ning nende seostest teiste õendustegevustega. Kvalitatiivne osa põhineb õendusabikliiniku õdedega tehtud intervjuudel, mille eesmärk on selgitada välja patsientide religiooniga seotud vajadused ning uurida õdede kogemusi patsientide religioosse heaolu toetamisel. Kvantitatiivsed tulemused näitasid, et õendustegevuste trendid on aastate jooksul püsinud suhteliselt stabiilsena, keskendudes peamiselt füüsilisele hooldusele. Intervjuude tulemused kinnitasid, et õed suudavad ära tunda ja toetada patsientide religiooniga seotud vajadusi, nagu palvetamine, pühade esemete väärtustamine ja religioossete tavade järgimine pühade ajal
