Understanding the increase in the size of annual military parades in democratic states: the example of Poland and Estonia
This master’s thesis examines military parades, with the aim of identifying factors that explain the increase in size of annual military parades in democratic countries, a phenomenon that has not been previously studied. Guided by the research question “What explains the increase in size of military parades in democratic states?”, this study tests two key hypotheses: if democratic backsliding, then increase in size of the annual military parade in democratic states; and if increase in aggressiveness of neighbour, then increase in size of the parade in democratic states. Using process-tracing, the suitability of these hyptheses are analysed by examining Estonia’s Independence Day military parade and Poland’s Armed Forces Day military parade in the period of 2007-2024, focusing on the key moments when the increase in size of the annual parade occurs.
The findings of the conducted study indicate that although some fluctuations in the size of military parades in democratic states are natural, the most significant increases are often deliberate and can be explained through the interests of the political leadership, especially in the context of democratic backsliding. Additionally, the study highlights that for democratic countries, the main target audience remains the domestic electorate. Even in the case of an increasingly aggressive neighbour, the increase in size is aimed at providing a sense of security for citizens, rather than being a credible deterrence against a potential adversary.https://www.ester.ee/record=b5755633*es

This paper examined the role and impact of trade unions in the Estonian healthcare sector, focusing on their impact on wages, working conditions and membership status and developments compared to previous work.Töö eesmärk on selgitada ametiühingute rolli ja mõju palkadele ning töötingimustele Eesti tervishoiusektoris.
Eesmärgi saavutamiseks püstitatakse töös järgmised ülesanded:
1. Analüüsida ametiühingute teoreetilisi lähtekohti tööturu dünaamika ja nende rolli mõistmiseks rahvusvahelise kirjanduse alusel.
2. Anda ülevaade varasematest empiirilistest uuringutest ametiühingute mõju kohta tervishoiusektors.
3. Analüüsida ametiühingute ja kollektiivläbirääkimiste mõju palkadele ja töötingimustele Eesti tervishoiusektoris

Non-precious metal Fe-N-C electrocatalysts, which can be used as cathode materials for oxygen reduction reaction in an anion-exchange membrane fuel cell were synthesized and investigated by electrochemical and physicochemical methods. The carbon, iron, and nitrogen precursors used to synthesize the electrocatalysts were lignin, iron(II) acetate, and 1,10-phenanthroline, respectively. To obtain the hierarchical porous carbon support, lignin was carbonized using magnesium nitrate hexahydrate as template via high-temperature pyrolysis. Several pyrolysis temperatures (800-1100 °C) were employed to find the optimal carbonization temperature. Iron and nitrogen doping was performed for all carbon materials through flash pyrolysis at 800 °C. The electrocatalytic performance of the prepared Fe-N-C catalyst materials toward the oxygen reduction reaction was studied and compared using the rotating disk electrode method. The physicochemical properties of the catalyst materials were investigated by various analytical methods, namely scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, N2 physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy

Nägemispõhine linnasisene asukoha määramine, kasutades Open Street Map’i
Autonomous vehicles, like other robots, need to localize themselves in order to navigate. While global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as GPS can provide such vehicles with localization information, the GNSS information might not always be available. Since localization is one of the crucial components in self-driving vehicles, it is important to develop robust techniques to accomplish it. One such localization technique for vehicles to localize is using particle filters, given a map of the environment. The goal of this thesis was to implement a robust localization framework that integrates the particle filter with vision-based street sign detection and Open Street Map, without any reliance on GNSS. The proposed framework was able to localize the vehicle within a radius of 10 meters of its ground truth location, showing promising results. The implemented framework provides a good starting point for any future improvements and experiments in the problem of GNSS-free localization in autonomous vehicles.Isejuhtivad sõidukid, nagu ka teised robotid, peavad navigeerimiseks enda asukoha kindlaks määrama. Kuigi globaalsed satelliitnavigatsioonisüsteemid (GNSS) nagu GPS võivad pakkuda sõidukitele nende asukoha kohta teavet, siis GNSS-i poolt pakutav informatsioon ei pruugi alati olla kättesaadav. Kuna asukoha määramine on üks isejuhtivate sõidukite kriitilisemaid komponente, siis on tähtis töökindlate meetodite välja töötamine antud valdkonnas. Üks selline meetod sõidukite asukoha määramiseks on osakeste filtri kasutamine, kui on olemas kaarditeave ümbritseva keskkonna kohta. Käesoleva lõputöö eesmärk oli rakendada kindlat positsioneerimisraamistikku, mis ühendab endas osakeste filtri, nägemispõhise tänavasiltide tuvastamise ja Open Street Map’i, ilma GNSS-i kasutamata. Kavandatud raamistik suutis sõiduki asukoha tuvastada 10 meetri raadiuses selle tegelikust asukohast, näidates paljutõotavaid tulemusi. Rakendatud raamistik on heaks lähtepunktiks tulevikutäiustuste ja -katsete tegemiseks seoses isejuhtivate sõidukite GNSS-vaba positsioneerimisega
