    Geometry generation challenges for modelling and analysis of micro-structured materials

    Engineers evaluating the performance of a component at the design stage will typically convert Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometry into a Finite Element model, and run a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine deformations and stress levels as a result of applied loads or displacements. The analysis results would then be interpreted by comparing them with the required duty of the component. For metallic components, homogeneous and isotropic material properties are generally assumed – “macro-scale” modelling. For components to be manufactured from composite materials, models may represent heterogeneity at the ply level, and orthotropic material properties applied with appropriate directionality. This ply-level modelling is often termed “meso-scale” modelling. Engineering interpretation of failure in materials is often based on empirical understanding of experimental data. This approach is generally robust: safety critical components would always be subject to validation by means of a suitable programme of testing. The aspect that is missing is the opportunity to improve understanding of the material performance by investigating the material performance at the “micro-scale”. This paper describes computational algorithms for generating random geometries exhibiting similar characteristics to those seen at the “micro-scale” in real materials, and the use of these to predict the influence of the “micro-scale” structure on the “macro-scale” material performance

    Why are women more religious than men? Testing the explanatory power of personality theory among undergraduate students in Wales

    This study tests the explanatory power of personality-based psychologically grounded theories to account for the well-established finding within the psychology of religion that within Christian and post-Christian contexts women are more religious than men. A sample of 1682 undergraduate students in Wales completed the short form of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised together with the adult form of the Francis Scale of Attitude towards Christianity and measures of frequency of church attendance, and frequency of personal prayer. These data confirm that women record higher levels of religiosity and lower levels of psychoticism, and demonstrate that psychoticism is the strongest predictor of individual differences in religiosity. Multiple-regression analyses show that, when individual differences in personality are taken into account, biological sex adds no further impact on religiosity. This finding suggests that higher levels of religiosity among women may be interpreted as a function of basic psychological differences in levels of psychoticism rather than as a sociological function of being female

    The psychological type profile of Singaporean Pentecostal pastors: a research report

    This study compares the psychological type profile of pastors who lead Pentecostal churches in Singapore with wider population norms. Data provided by 117 pastors who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS: Francis, 2005) demonstrate that, compared with the wider population norms, these leaders were more likely to prefer introversion, sensing, feeling and judging. The implications of these findings are briefly discussed in relation to ministry, missionary training and mission

    Using empirical and quantitative methods Pentecostal ministers are compared in the three locations of Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. After providing an account of the historical backgrounds of Pentecostal churches in these locations, similarities and differences in the samples may be attributed to environmental or cultural effects. The paper concludes that there is evidence that cultural differences affect the views of respondents in a variety of measurable ways including in their opinion of ecumenical cooperation and in their attitudes to the poor or disadvantaged

    Evaluating the REF2014 Results in Art and Design

    In the UK, periodic assessment of research in universities has taken place since 1986. The most recent took place during 2014 with the results being published at the end of the year. This evaluation is concerned with art and design though all disciplines were included in the assessment. The method used for assessing research quality is outlined and the results summarised. The lessons drawn from the evaluation by REF2014 are detailed. A number of issues are identified and discussed. These include the staff selected for submission, the method of evaluation, and a cost-benefit analysis of the process

It recognised the uncertain boundaries of physical and psychological identity and how the notion of 'difference' is in itself problematic. It questioned how we define and decide what difference is. The exhibition actively sought to provide a diverse and fuller range of human embodiments which invited the viewer to move outside of any preconceptions about what life, characterised by 'difference', might be like

    A review of spatio-temporal pattern analysis approaches on crime analysis

    This review aims to summarize spatio-temporal pattern analysis approaches for crime analysis. Spatio-temporal pattern analysis is a process that obtains knowledge from geo-and-time-referenced data and creates knowledge for crime analysts. In practice, knowledge needs vary amongst different situations. In order to obtain relevant types of knowledge, different types of spatio-temporal pattern analysis approaches should be used. However, there is a lack of related systematic review which discussed how to obtain related knowledge from different types of spatio-temporal crime pattern. This paper summarizes spatio-temporal patterns into five major categories: (i) spatial pattern, (ii) temporal pattern, (iii) frequent spatio-temporal pattern, (iv) unusual spatio-temporal pattern and (v) spatio-temporal effect due to intervention. In addition, we also discuss what knowledge could be obtained from these patterns, and what corresponding approaches, including various data mining techniques, could be used to find them. The works of this paper could provide a reference for crime analysts to select appropriate spatio-temporal pattern analysis approaches according to their knowledge needs

    A comparison of the magnetic properties of Ni and Co nanowires deposited in different templates and on different substrates

    Nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) nanowire arrays (NWs) grown by electrodeposition in porous nano-templates are studied by the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique at room temperature (RT) by comparing the effects of template type (alumina and polycarbonate) and the deposition substrate (i.e., metallic back contact). The line-width and resonance field of the FMR spectra strongly depends on the orientation of the applied field direction. A model is developed to analyze the spectra in order to extract the magnetic parameters such as g-values, spin–spin relaxation times (T2) and uniaxial anisotropy parameters. The experimental FMR spectra and their resonance field values were fitted using the imaginary part of magnetic susceptibility and a dispersion relation of magnetization, including the Bloch–Bloembergen type damping term. The easy axes of magnetization for all Ni and Co NWs were found to be perpendicular to the wire-axis. Surface spin modes have been observed only when pure Au was used as substrate. A discussion will be provided to explain the observed differences in terms of the anisotropic behavior and magnetic parameters of the NWs for different substrates and growth templates

    High sensitive materials in medical holographic microscopy

    High sensitivity is defined in relation to the energy required to perform holographic recording. High sensitivity in silver halide materials is their main advantage over other similarly high resolving power holographic recording materials. This work reports progress on the development of silver halide based 'true colour holographic imaging', under a microscope. A thin layer of ultrafine grains of silver halide crystals of around 10 nm average diameter, dispersed in a colloid and coated on a substrate is used as the recording media. The significance of this method so far, is in its ability to produce 'true colour' three-dimensional images of specimen. The recordings have an appreciable depth, permitting the observer to scan through the image under a microscope, as one might with a real specimen sample. Current methods could perform ' True colour holographic imaging' directly under a microscope. The recording methodology has the potential for deeper complex and scattering media imaging, using very small pulses of appropriate laser wavelengths. The methodology, using novel nanosize panchromatic recording media consisting of dispersed fine nano grain crystals, could potentially revolutionise related medical imaging techniques. Future development of digital media will allow it to be utilized in this manner
