The installation (exhibition) was constructed with the notion of creating ‘little visual disturbances’ within the field of vision – disturbances that mitigate against an overall unifying impression of the ‘show’. The intention of simulating a self-conscious pictorial ‘fracture’ (hence ‘seeing walls’) comes out of problem-finding in conventional artistic, studio based methodologies. The pieces in this installation consist of a loosely interlocking ‘mesh’ of especially constructed objects, wall drawings, ‘ruined texts’ and video, often with urban or domestic connotations

Flexural and interlaminar shear strength properties of carbon fibre/epoxy composites cured thermally and with microwave radiation
Get PDFThe ease of heating an epoxy resin with microwaves depends, among other factors, on the dielectric properties of its components at the frequency of the radiation used. The majority of the papers published on the microwave curing of reinforced epoxy resin composites have used widely available DGEBA type resins and amine hardeners such as 4,4’-diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS). This paper investigates the use of two epoxy systems where the choice of resin and hardener was based on their measured dielectric loss factors. System 1 contained a resin and hardener with higher loss factors than those used in System 2. The two systems were formulated with polyetherimide (PEI) as a toughening agent. Unidirectional carbon fibre prepregs were prepared from both systems. Composites were laid up from these prepregs which were then cured in three different ways: autoclave curing, partial autoclave curing followed by microwave post-curing, and microwave curing. System 1 composites had greater flexural properties and interlaminar shear strengths than System 2 composites when autoclave cured. Flexural properties and interlaminar shear strengths were greater for System 2 in the microwave post-cured composites. When fully microwave cured the properties were similar. In the microwave cured composites the flexural and interlaminar shear properties were influenced by the structure of the phase separated PEI and the void content
Vibration and Buckling of Cross-Ply Composite Beams using Refined Shear Deformation Theory
Get PDFVibration and buckling analysis of cross-ply composite beams using refined shear deformation theory is presented. The theory accounts for the parabolical variation of shear strains through the depth of beam. Three governing equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. The resulting coupling is referred to as triply coupled vibration and buckling. A two-noded C1 beam element with five degree-of-freedom per node is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for composite beams to investigate modulus ratio on the natural frequencies, critical buckling loads and load-frequency interaction curves
Optimization of delays experienced by packets due to ACLs within a domain
Get PDFThe infrastructure of large networks is broken down into areas that have a common security policy called a domain. Security within a domain is commonly implemented at all nodes however this has a negative effect on performance since it introduces a delay associated with packet filtering. Recommended techniques for network design imply that every packet should be checked at the first possible ingress points of the network. When access control lists (ACL's) are used within a router for this purpose then there can be a significant overhead associated with this process. The purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of delays when using router operating systems offering different levels of functionality. It considers factors which contribute to the delay particularly due to ACL. Using theoretical principles modified by practical calculation a model is created for packet delay for all nodes across a given path in a domain
The Assessment of Enterprise Education in the Secondary Sector: A new approach?

This article explores the challenges of assessing enterprise education in the secondary education sector. It aims to provide useful insights to help practitioners understand how to evidence the impact of enterprise learning by students.
It is necessary because although the assessment of enterprise education activities has been widely highlighted as a key area of concern, it continues to be under represented in the literature. Questions remain as to how educators seeking to monitor student progression can capture quality data and measure relevant aspects of development, often leading enterprise education to be monitored rather than assessed.
The article challenges this position by investigating the problems of assessing enterprise in secondary education, examining what does and does not work, and providing practitioners with useful guidance.
Approach:
The paper has two stages; firstly by presenting a critical review of the existing literature with insights from specialist practitioners sourced through an online survey and a seminar. This provides a broad review of the field from a practitioner standpoint focusing on current assessment techniques and standards. Using this data a conceptual pedagogy is proposed for the delivery of enterprise education and a methodology for its assessment, to be developed in future work.
Findings:
A critical review of the assessment of enterprise education is presented. This exposes challenges of a confused field, with pockets of good practice in schools often not shared or understood out of context. The development of a novel pedagogical model for teaching enterprise education is proposed, linked to a prototype assessment methodology which presents a new approach for enterprise teaching and learning.
Practical Implications:
The paper provides a conceptual model for structuring enterprise education which may have relevance across the secondary sector and beyond. The work is limited at this stage since participants in the research were drawn from one geographic area in the East of England, and examples of qualifications reviewed were not exhaustive, but these limitations can be addressed in future research.

In this important topic it is vital that new approaches are developed which can a broader debate is created especially at a time of such great change in the educational landscape. This paper provides a platform for further development in the field
