Background: Conventional treatments are related with several difficulties, including dyskinesia, excessive daytime sleepiness, sudden sleep attacks, leg swelling, and discoloration. Therefore, we examine the efficacy of the probiotics in the management of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methodology: A widespread literature search was accomplished on PubMed, Google Scholar, Wiley as well as Nature of Science databases, covering the period since 2013 to 2023. Result: A Total 13 studies were comprised in this study. This study shows high quality indication of development in undefined PD rating scale (UPDRS) (Standardize mean difference -1.00 [95% CI -4.07 to 2.07], NMSQ score -4.94 [95% CI -6.95 to -2.92],Quality of life QOL-45.95 [95% CI -52.05 to -39.86],Depression scale -4.57 [95% CI -8.40 to -0.74] as well as Bowel movement (BM)0.40 [95% CI -0.51 to 1.31].However there is significance found in the Bristol stool score in the placebo group. Conclusion: Based on the study findings, it can be inferred that probiotics have a beneficial impact on non-motor symptoms, motor function, bowel movement as well as the reduction of depression in individuals with PD. The integration of probiotic supplementation into PD management has the potential to be a cheap and secure complementary treatment option

The data was obtained through interview techniques on demographic and medication adherence scales from samples who met the inclusion criteria. Results: The study results shown that 8.69% patients had low expressed emotion, 60% had moderately expressed emotion, and 31.30 % had high expressed emotion. The association found between the level of expressed emotion and the religion of patients was statistically significant at p < 0.05. The association found between the level of expressed emotion the number of hospital admission, types of illness, education, family monthly income, marital status, and duration of caretaking among caregivers at p < 0.05. Conclusion: The study found that the emotions expressed by caregivers were a predictor of the re-hospitalization rate among mentally ill patients. The presence of a significant amount of expressed emotion points out the need for psychosocial support from the family members. This will reduce the emotion expressed, which could reduce relapse rates and help caregivers adapt and manage the ill family member effectively

    Get PDF
Introduction: Approximately 20% of the population experiences chronic pain. Chronic pain is characterized as a persistent sensation of discomfort that lasts for a duration exceeding three months subsequent to the experience of a traumatic incident or inflammation. Chronic pain can present itself in either intermittent or chronic patterns, often accompanied by a parasympathetic physiological response. Chronic pain is linked to a range of adverse consequences, such as impairments in the execution of everyday activities, dependence on opioid analgesics, heightened levels of anxiety, and manifestations of depressive symptoms. The therapeutic effectiveness of tryptophan and its metabolites, including kynurenic acid, exhibits encouraging indications in the management of chronic pain. Acupuncture has been utilized as an adjunctive therapeutic modality for centuries in the management of chronic pain. Acupuncture possesses the capacity to influence individuals\u27 perception of pain at an emotional level, inducing a tranquil emotional state and promoting heightened relaxation in patients. Objectives: This study aims to systematically investigate the effects of acupuncture on kynurenic acid, a variable that functions as an objective measure of pain. Methods: We conducted a literature review in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases referring to how acupuncture and kynurenic acid contribute to reduction of chronic pain. Results: The acupuncture interventions varied in terms of techniques, frequency, and duration. The findings revealed a consistent trend of increased kynurenic acid levels following acupuncture treatments in chronic pain patients. However, the magnitude of this increase varied among studies. Additionally, several studies reported improvements in pain severity and reduction in opioid reliance among participants receiving acupuncture. Methodological quality assessments indicated moderate to high quality among the included studies. Despite the overall positive trend, some heterogeneity was observed in the response to acupuncture across different pain conditions. These results suggest that acupuncture may hold promise as a complementary therapy for chronic pain management, with kynurenic acid serving as a potential biomarker for monitoring treatment effectiveness. Conclusions: Acupuncture has been shown to be beneficial in relieving chronic pain, and the use of kynurenic acid can aid in the objective assessment of its efficiency

Background The study aims to translate the Leuven Affect and Pleasure Scale (LAPS) into the Malay version (LAPS-M) and to evaluate the psychometric properties. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at both psychiatric centres in Malaysia. LAPS-M was developed from the original LAPS via translation process and specific wording amendments were made for local cultural adaptation. A group of depressed patients (N=187) and healthy subjects (N=83) completed LAPS, LAPS-M, Montgomery- Asberg Depression Rating Scale-Malay version (MADRS-M), Positive Emotion Rating Scale (PERS) and Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS). Results The LAPS-M demonstrated good parallel form reliability when compare with LAPS (ICC = 0.83). The internal consistency of LAPS-M was excellent with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.977. The assumptions of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) shown adequate sample size based on Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy; the bartlett’s test result of p value < .001. EFA method of Parallel Analysis and Velicer’s Minimum Average Partial Criterion shown 3-Construct in LAPS-M. Each construct in LAPS-M shown good convergent validity compare with PERS (r = 0.82), SHAPS (r = 0.79) and MADRS-M (r = -0.74). The new scoring system was developed in LAPS-M. The cut-off score of 107 distinguished depressed patients from healthy subjects with sensitivity of 91.4% and specificity of 87.9%. Positive predictive value revealed 92% and negative predictive value revealed 87%. The area under the curve (AUC) for the receiver operating characteristic was 0.93. Conclusion LAPS-M is a comprehensive self-rated depressive assessment scale that demonstrated satisfying psychometric properties in measuring multifaceted components of psychological wellbeing.  Keywords: Depression; Negative affect; Positive affect; Mental health; Leuven Affect and Pleasure Scale ; Exploratory Factor Analysi
