Spiritism on the Internet communication channels

    No full text
Improvement in the communication systems in the last twenty years led to changes in the way we exchange information on everyday basis. Themes such as spiritism, parapsychology and occultism, that were approached from the distance in every day life, started to unfold inside the virtual space. Research is directed towards understanding spiritism and spiritistic practices on the Internet communication channels with the purpose of questioning the way spiritistic experiences are communicated and comprehended on these channels as well as to exploring (specific) virtual communities that are gathered around the subject (if they exist). Beside explaining, analysing and comparing basic terms of spiritism and spiritistic teachings and practices, the study is arguing both process and issues of the research in virtual space, such as questioning the authenticity of the data and the ethical principles in collecting data in online setting, and as well offers the analysis of the term virtual community

Living in-between – space and identity in Neum

    No full text
The paper focuses on Neum, the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a cross-border space and the factors that shape the identification process, with an empasis on its transit dimension and location between two borders and two states. The features of Neum's identity are developed in relation to tourism, the main contributor to the economy of the area, and the guest-tourist conflict developing accordingly, bearing in mind that majority of tourists arrive from Bosnia. Bosnia as the Close Other functions as a mode against which local and national identity is constructed. Borders and poor trafic connection are the defining factors that condition the closedness of the community

Contemporary emigration from Croatia to Sweden: role of migration networks

    No full text
The paper presents contemporary emigration from Croatia to Sweden with an emphasis on migration networks and its presence and role in the migration process. Qualitative research was conducted with usage of semi structured interview with an emphasis on ethnography of the individual. Trough the interview with nine, mostly highly educated narrators push and pull factors which influenced migration from Croatia to Sweden are shown. Their daily experience in Sweden (job opportunities, accommodation, learning of Swedish language and spending leisure time) and migration network which made the process of emigrating to Sweden easier were presented. This paper ends with comparison of life in Sweden and Croatia and questions regarding future plans and potential permanent return to Croatia

The relationship between language, mind and culture has been intriguing the minds of linguists, anthropologists, psychologists and other researchers for over a century. In the recent years, extensive research in various linguistic disciplines was conducted on emotions, as they are a prolific field for the research of language and mind. Conceptual metaphor has always had a crucial role in cognitive linguistic research, but recently some light has been shed on the importance of grammar in such studies. Bearing in mind that language consists of both metaphorical and non-metaphorical expressions, this paper presents a semantic-grammatical analysis of the concept of anger in English and in Russian. As the cognitive model of anger for English has been defined, this paper focuses on the cross-cultural variations of the concept of anger in English and in Russian. The study found that English and Russian share a vast majority of event schemas, and that they are somewhat different in the structure of non-participant roles. The main differences were found in the frequencies and elaborations of different event schemas and non-participant roles, as well as in the elaboration of the anger scenario. Russian speakers focus more on non-participant roles than English speakers do, whereas English speakers focus more on event schemas. They emphasize the offending event and loss of control, while Russian speakers more often talk about physiological effects of anger and retribution acts. By the means of semantic-grammatical analysis, the study has shown that a connection between language and the conceptualization of concepts embedded in culture exists. Since emotions are a vast field of research, this study gives only a glance into anger/zlost cross-cultural variety. In order to elaborate the concept of anger/zlost in more detail, future research should include the analysis of the first semantic-grammatical level in corpora and in the language of native speakers, as well as a greater number of examples. Another interesting notion for further research is the interdependence of and the connection between control over anger and the loss of control. To get a greater picture of this complex emotion, more connections need to be made between the linguistic and psychological research. In this light, the given study represents a small part of what should be an extensive, detailed research into the concept of anger/zlost

    Transformacije suvremene romantične komedije

    No full text

Small University Press : Gaining Visibility, Usage and Impact

    No full text
Aim: Steps necessary to transform a small traditional university press to an open access publishing endeavour with international reach will be identified and described. The press used as an example could be considered “niche” in several ways, which could impose additional challenges: it covers humanities and social sciences, it is largely book based, and it belongs to the so-called scientific periphery, both geographically and linguistically. Methods: The current state of a University of Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences publishing activities are described, with special attention to its openness, output type (monographs and proceedings vs journals, digital/hybrid vs print only, English vs Croatian language), adherence to international standards (in digital formats, metadata, identifiers, content licencing, usage data etc), visibility and discoverability. These findings are put in the broader international context of HSS open access publishing, to gain knowledge about best practices, identify challenges and prioritise future developments. Recent developments within projects related to open access publishing in humanities and social sciences like OAPEN (1), Operas (2), Hirmeos (3), Knowledge Unlatched (4) and Open Edition (5) are being analysed, compared and taken as guidelines. Results and Discussion: Within the University of Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences publishing, there are three diverse sets of publications: scholarly journals, student journals and books. Twelve scholarly journals (co)published by the Faculty are currently (more or less) active, while thirteen more are published by professional societies closely related with the Faculty and edited by Faculty professors. All of those journals are open access journals and are present on Hrčak – Portal of Scientific Journals of Croatia. Still, within this group of 25 journals there are considerable differences in editorial and publishing practices as well as in international visibility and impact (for instance, 12 are indexed in Scopus, only 5 in WoS databases, and the coverage in many specialised databases and indexes is significant, but there is still considerable effort needed to expand this venue of visibility). Even though all journals are OA, only nine of them fulfilled the criteria for inclusion in DOAJ, while others were not able to fulfil the basic requirements for inclusion (6). Areas for which it was recognised that journals need assistance for improvement are: online support for editing and reviewing process (preferably via local support for Open Journal System), inclusion in CrossRef services (DOI assignment, Similarity Check, depositing open references), use of identifiers, format diversity and decisions on open access policies, copyright, plagiarism and licencing issues. As for 10 active student journals, issues of continuity in good editorial and publishing practices are of highest importance: without organised institutional support it will not be possible to achieve basic requirements for scholarly journals and maintain timeliness. While modes of publishing for open access journals are broadly accepted, books and their visibility and discoverability pose a greater challenge (7, 8). Unlike journals, book publishing at the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have until now been exclusively printbased. Without readily available national distribution platform for online open distribution like Hrčak for journals, the first decision should be related to technical infrastructure: whether to build own digital platform (using existing open source software like OMP – Open Monograph Press or newly developed Janeway), or taking part in existing platforms like Ubiquity, Knowledge Unlatched Open Sevices, OpenEdition or Open Book Publishers. Several issues are similar to journal publishing, especially the need to define open access policies, and open licences. The need for diversity in available formats besides pdf, provision of high-quality metadata and collecting usage data in standardised way are even more important than for journals, since books in HSS could have potentially larger and not exclusively academic audience. Also, providing structured and open reference data could have a great importance in tracking usage and impact, since it could enable visibility of citation data for documents that were previously under-represented in citation indexes. Conclusion: Small-scale university presses within the current digital publishing landscape are faced with many challenges. In most cases, they will not have enough capacity for own expertise. Therefore there is a clear benefit from national coordination and participation in international projects. References 1. OAPEN Open Access Publishing in European Networks : Organisation. Judeomalajalamski : kulturno-povijesni pregled

Slobodno vrijeme obitelji s djetetom s teškoćama u razvoju

    No full text

    No full text
Ovim radom ćemo u kontekstu očuvanja stare i rijetke građe prikazati projekt digitalizacije zvučnih zapisa zbirke “Arhiv Književnog petka“ koji je organiziran u okviru projekta “Digitalizirana zagrebačka baština“ Knjižnica grada Zagreba. Napravit ćemo pregled cijelog procesa digitalizacije i obrade građe. In this diploma thesis we will present the project of digitization of the sound recordings of the "Literary Friday Archive" collection, organized in the framework of the project "Digitized Zagreb Heritage" of the Zagreb City Library. We will look over this project in context of preservation of old and rare materials. Next we will review the entire process of digitization and processing of materials. In introduction we will trot out the history of the "Literary Friday " and briefly review the importance of this forum for literary and social life of Zagreb. Then we will analyze digitization of this materials in broader context. First we will present the project "Voices of the Literary Friday" and highlight its significance. Next we will analyse the role of this project in context of creating digital library. In the second part of the paper we will deal with cataloging of digital sound reproduction of the "Literary Friday" tribune which has been digitized within the project (sound recordings from 1957. to 1976.). The first issue we will consider in the context of formal processing is - how to define this type of material, since we can describe network-digitized sound material by definition as both sound and electronic material. In the end we will touch upon the conditions of access to materials and copyright issues, and the effect that it has on visibility of digitaised material
