In this article we present a study on how homophobic violence (HV) toward women is carried out in schools. Concepts such as homophobic bullying or HV are commonly used to argue that this type of victimization is a response to hostile relations that occur to a greater degree among students. We performed a 6-month ethnographic study in a public high school in the city of Antofagasta, Chile. Critical discourse analysis was used to analyze our field notes, interviews with students, principals and teachers, and internal school regulations. The main findings indicate that the recent change in educational policies have influenced the organization of the school, in terms of incorporating complex tolerance exercises, vigilance, and regulation of the affective relationships among  students. In addition, a series of practices had been promoted that include the imposition of heterosexual femininity. We conclude that heterosexuality operates as a policy management system in schools, producing zones of exclusion and reinforcing social hierarchies. Thus, in order to understand the articulation of HV, it is necessary to understand it as systemic arrangement within the school, given that this violence includes other expressions of violence, such as gender and class, and HV must also be understood in terms of heterosexual regulation exercises.

The Organization of Transitions between Observing and Teaching in the Budo Class

This article is an illustration of the multimodal way in which judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu teachers manage activity transitions from observing the students to teaching them. The data is collected from three beginner-level judo classes, filmed in Finland in autumn 2013, and two intermediary level Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes, filmed in Finland in autumn 2015. Different communicative moves employed by the teachers are examined through multimodal conversation analysis, and the sequential organization of these moves is presented in the analysis. The way participation changes, and is changed, during these transition sequences is also discussed. The findings indicate that these transition sequences are deeply multimodal and collaborative by nature. The teacher may be pedagogically responsible for the class, but the in-situ management of the transitions is largely dependent on the students and their embodied conduct

The General Practice Health Waiting Area in Images: Threshold, Borderland, and Place of Transition in the Sense of Self

The waiting rooms and areas of general practice (GP) health facilities are places that nearly all of us will find ourselves in but the waiting experience is under-explored. What happens to our sense of self when we move between the outside world where we are citizens and these spaces where we become patients-in-waiting? I begin with what has been written about waiting in general and in health waiting areas in particular. I then discuss a photo-documentation study of twenty-two GP waiting rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland and explore the questions that arise from the resultant images.Examples are presented that illustrate the unique place of the waiting room in the patient journey between the outside world and the encounter with their doctor. Examples are given of both calm-inducing and unsettling elements. Potentially disempowering processes are identified occasioned by the waiting experience and the issue of the transition in sense of self is raised. I conclude by pointing to other waiting areas and places where such dynamics and processes might be more acute

Participatory Research Into Inclusive Practice: Improving Services for People With Long Term Neurological Conditions

People with long-term conditions are intensive users of health services as well as being long term users of social care and community services. In the UK, the Department of Health has suggested that the development of a more inclusive approach to services could furnish benefits to people with long-term conditions and financial savings for service providers.Researchers with a varied set of expertise and experience (users of neuro-rehabilitation services, staff working in services, people working with third sector agencies and university academics) adopted a participatory research approach to work together to explore what inclusion might look and feel like for people who are long term users of health services. The element of critique and mutual challenge, developed within the research process, disturbed current presentations of inclusion and inclusive practice. It revealed that the more usually expected components of inclusion (trust, respect and shared responsibility) whilst necessary for inclusive practice, are not necessarily sufficient. Inclusion is revealed as a complex and challenging process that requires the active construction of a critical communicative space for dialectical and democratic learning for service development

We explore the vocational decisions of seven students with learning challenges living in a rural area in Spain and who were completing their final year of compulsory education. Our design combined research and intervention strategies based on notions of sociocultural mediation and re-mediation. Our objectives were both analytical and practical. On the one hand, a sociocultural approach was used to explore how identity meanings are used by the students on a discursive construction related to their vocational choices; on the other hand, students had been provided with tools that facilitated the reflexive act of constructing and projecting their own academic and professional careers. We conclude that the reflexive use of autobiographical narratives makes it possible to provide vocational guidance in social, cultural, and institutional environments, helping to increase its impact on students' lives.

Phenomenology and Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS): A Careful Reconciliation

    Get PDF
Yet phenomenologists rarely describe how phenomenology is to be done: pencil, paper, computer? DAVIDSON and DI GREGORIO (2011) urge QDAS contrarians such as VAN MANEN to get over their methodological loyalties and join the digital world, claiming that all qualitative researchers, whatever their methodology, perform processes aided by QDAS: disaggregation and recontextualization of texts. Other phenomenologists exemplify DAVIDSON and DI GREGORIO's observation that arguments against QDAS often identify problems more closely related to the researchers than QDAS. But the concerns about technology of McLUHAN (2003 [1964]), HEIDEGGER (2008 [1977]), and FLUSSER (2013) cannot be ignored. In this conceptual article I answer the questions of phenomenologists and the call of QDAS methodologists to describe how I used QDAS to carry out a phenomenological study in order to guide others who choose to reconcile the use of software to assist their research.URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs170114

"The Fundamental Truths of the Film Remain": Researching Individual Reception of Holocaust Films

    Get PDF
I will discuss empirical approaches to viewers' reception of films about the Holocaust. Existing studies tend to focus on the effects of, or responses to, one film or to one type of film, which results in skewed ideas about "Holocaust films" and their audiences. I will present a qualitative study of individual reception of feature films about the Holocaust I conducted in Britain, and demonstrate how a comparison of the reception of different films and genres can add to our understanding of their interpretation and impact. Differences and similarities in responses to feature films based on fictional narratives on the one hand and on "true stories" on the other hand, will be highlighted, while also taking into account viewers' interpretative communities. I will show that films based on true stories, especially if shot in a realist style, added more measurably to historical knowledge and understanding than those based on fiction, with the latter tending to be judged to different standards of authenticity. While viewers appeared to be able to recognise if a film is not primarily based on fact, they still expected a Holocaust film to be "true" in other ways.URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs170214

Conference Report: 5th Swiss Methods Festival for Qualitative Research Methods

    No full text
Complemented by two keynotes that address contemporary issues within the field of qualitative research, the workshops introduce the participants to the state-of-the-art of the respective approaches and offer the opportunity to discuss ongoing research projects. The festival constitutes the largest event in Switzerland concerned with qualitative methods, addressing the still marginal situation of qualitative methods in the curricula of many Swiss universities. This report provides an account of the 5th Swiss Methods Festival, contextualizes the event historically, presents the different workshops, and offers a short discussion of the issues addressed in the keynotes.URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs170213

Conference Report: Scientific Integrity in Qualitative Research (SCIQUAL) Seminar 2017

    Get PDF
The Scientific Integrity in Qualitative Research (SCIQUAL) 2017 seminar focused on the basic rules of good scientific practice and researchers' commitment to (or lack thereof in) adhering to these rules. Especially in the case of qualitative research, where there is a lack of standardized measures to ensure the quality of the methods, scientific integrity is a fuzzy concept and a big concern. To add on to this, increasing demands to publish or perish compel researchers to produce strong, concrete, evidence-based contributions at an alarmingly fast pace. Other factors like financial constraints, competition, etc. might also tempt scientists to achieve success swiftly through the use of unfair research practices. This is an alarming trait since good science is supposed to be credible, authentic, trustworthy, and ethical. SCIQUAL 2017 brought our attention to a few topics (e.g. reflexivity, ethical climate, deviant cases) which comes under the umbrella term of scientific integrity

Conditions of Success in Intercultural School Development: Group Discussions About the Requirements of and Attitudes Toward Intercultural School Development

    No full text
Lösungen für bestehende Sprachbarrieren zwischen Lehrkräften, Schüler/innen und Eltern machen sowohl strukturelle Maßnahmen als auch Regelungen für die Einzelschulen erforderlich.URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs170281In this study we investigate how intercultural school development can succeed, taking into account the perspective of teachers, principals, and mentors to teacher trainees. The large number of immigrant children and youth results in pressures on schools and school systems to act on their behalf. In the framework of investigative group discussions, teachers, principals, and mentors identified organizational structures, measures, cooperation, and attitudes which are important for an intercultural school development process. These requirements were grouped into categories using content analysis according to MAYRING (2010). From the findings, conditions for a successful school development process were derived. These conditions affect the organizational, personal and social levels. Schools must reach out to immigrant parents and encourage them to participate in school life as well as involving external support systems such as youth welfare services, therapeutic and medical institutions. Moreover, schools need to initiate counseling for both students and teachers, to strengthen teamwork and to reflect on attitudes towards diversity. Without providing further resources and further training, intercultural school development cannot be realized. Language barriers between teachers, students, and parents require structural changes as well as support for individual schools.URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs17028
