Discourse and Subjectivation Theory Meet Group Discussions: Methodological Considerations for a New Connection
While there is a growing belief that the data used in pedagogical discourse and subjectivation research is made up of statements by speakers from interviews and ethnographic observations, group discussions, represent a type of material in this field that has seldom been taken into account to date. Rather, group discussions have so far been closely linked to the documentary method, which is based on assumptions of the praxeological sociology of knowledge. In contrast, a methodological justification of speaking in group discussions by discourse- and subjectivation-theoretical figures of thought in the German-speaking and international research landscape is still lacking. In this article, I combine a poststructuralist perspective with group discussions. I outline methodological assumptions, which have so far established the procedure on the basis of the documentary method, and also carry out central discourse and subjectivation-theoretical premises of a perspective oriented towards the work of Judith BUTLER. By subsequently juxtaposing these approaches , I show to what extent basic assumptions are modified in the course of a post-structuralizing perspective and clarify the potential for poststructuralist discourse and subjectivation analyses. I suggest understanding utterances in group discussions as executions of situated discursive practices and places of processes of subjectivation
Participation as Entangled Self Assertion
In this article, we explore the concept of participation, tracing the history of how participation has been understood and used in ethnographic and critical participatory action research methodological traditions. Within this exploration we push on the limits and boundaries of our ordinary conceptions of "participation," presenting and working through scenarios from our fieldwork in which we took for granted an ordinary concept of participation. As we work through these scenarios we encounter participation first as rebellion, then as resistance, and finally as entangled self-assertion, as opportunities for establishing one's dignity and worthwhileness in an institutional context that diminishes or denies recognition of one's dignity and worthwhileness. This notion of participation as a mode of self-dignity speaks back to the way in which knowledge is not neutral for self and is not separate of self
Betwixt and Between Conversation Analysis and Ethnomethodology. Jürgen Streeck in Conversation With Hannes Krämer & René Salomon
In the following interview, Jürgen STREECK discusses the development of ethnomethodology and its overlaps with conversation analysis and interaction analysis. He provides a personal account of the influence of Aaron COICUREL for his own understanding of ethnomethodology, of their shared intellectual environment in the U.S. and in Germany, and of the different ways in which linguistics and sociology were intertwined. STREECK shows how pivotal linguistic concepts like indexicality were challenged and developed further by ethnomethodology. Furthermore, he underlines the importance of theoretical approaches by Ludwig WITTGENSTEIN, Maurice MERLEAU-PONTY and George Herbert MEAD, which were integrated differently within the field of conversation analysis and ethnomethodology. Against this background, STREECK highlights the body as an essential resource for interaction and discusses the theoretical as well as methodological implications of embodied interaction. In doing so, STREECK shows impressively the potential of a broadening of ethnomethodological concepts
To Follow Garfinkel Means to Turn Sociology From Its Head to Its Toes. Jörg Bergmann & Christian Meyer in Conversation With René Salomon & Hannes Krämer
In this interview, they reconstruct their theoretical turn towards ethnomethodology and discuss its historical success in Germany and the US. They address questions about the theoretical foundations and understandings of ethnomethodology as well as its analytic application and teaching possibilities. In addition, they trace the paths and detours of the reception of Harold GARFINKEL's ethnomethodology in West Germany, and offer access to the theoretical depth and challenges of this strand of sociology
Review Essay: Classical Studies as a Starting Point. A Comprehensive and Easy-to-Understand Introduction to Selected Qualitative Research Approaches
In his book, Patrick HEISER introduces commonly utilized qualitative research approaches, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques using four classical studies. The author chose the study "Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal" [The Sociography of an Unemployed Community] (JAHODA, LAZARSFELD & ZEISEL 1975 [1933]) to illustrate ethnography and participant observation; the study on unemployed teachers (ULICH, HAUSSER, MAYRING, STREHMEL & KANDLER 1985) to discuss the expert interview and qualitative content analysis; the study on community mergers and community power structures (SCHÜTZE 1976) for the narrative interview as well as narrative analysis; and "Awareness of Dying" (GLASER & STRAUSS 1965) to discuss grounded theory methodology. Each of the studies presented is evaluated with reference to two different quality criteria of qualitative research. Patrick HEISER's text is a clearly written introductory work that gives students of sociology and related fields a comprehensive insight into frequently used qualitative data collection methods and, in particular, data analysis techniques
Qualitative Content Analysis: From Kracauer's Beginnings to Today's Challenges
At the beginning of the 1950s, when communication research was at its peak, KRACAUER coined the term "qualitative content analysis." Today, the method is one of the most frequently used social research methods in Germany. Building on KRACAUER's line of argument, in this article I identify three fields for further development of the method: first, a more qualitative type of analysis following the formation of categories and the data coding process; second, a case orientation complementing category-based analysis, which is characteristic of qualitative research but has so far played a negligible role in qualitative content analysis; third, a stronger reference to the international methodological discussion where qualitative content analysis remains a little known method. In addition, I further reflect on methodological considerations, concluding by focusing on standards and quality criteria and advocating for the continued development of methodological rigor
Linguistic and Cultural Challenges in the Qualitative Content Analysis of Music Biographical Interviews With Chinese and Swiss Music Students
In this report we consider methodological challenges that arise in intercultural comparative research projects due to linguistic diversity and culture-specific connotations. Solutions for the collection, preparation, and evaluation of data in multilingual settings were developed based on a content-structuring qualitative content analysis of multilingual interview transcripts. Collaboration with interpreters and co-interviewers is crucial for conducting interviews in the mother tongue of the interviewees. This collaborative process is described and a possible procedure for the transcription, translation, and analysis of foreign language data is outlined. In addition to the intercultural competence and cultural knowledge of the researchers, their exchange with experts prior to data collection and with translators during data preparation and evaluation plays an important role
A Quality Approach to Qualitative Content Analysis: Similarities and Differences Compared to Other Qualitative Methods
Qualitative content analysis is a method that shares many of the unique attributes associated with all qualitative research methods. These shared attributes extend to a key consideration in all qualitative research designs, i.e., the integration of quality concepts at each step of the research process. In this article I discuss one such approach, the total quality framework. With this framework at hand, researchers can think about quality in qualitative research regardless of the qualitative method, including qualitative content analysis. For example, quality constructs associated with sampling, researcher effects, and data verification in qualitative content analysis are not unlike those in the in-depth interview, focus group, or observation method. There are, however, a few quality considerations distinctive to the qualitative content analysis method, such as the definition of "data" and the necessary thick description associated with the two-phase, eight-step qualitative content analysis process. In this article I discuss the similarities and differences between the qualitative content analysis method and other qualitative methods from a quality perspective; specifically, the total quality framework
Categories as an Expression of an Identified Observer Perspective? A Constructive Proposal for a more Qualitative Qualitative Content Analysis
Qualitative content analysis (QCA) is an established method in different fields of social and educational sciences. It can be located at the intersection of quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Although generally oriented towards hermeneutic-interpretive text comprehension, its categorical logic sometimes seems to follow a quantitative research logic. Against this background, and in order to better meet the criteria of qualitative research, I make a proposal for a more qualitative QCA. Specifically, I introduce a technique for the systematic explication of the prior knowledge relevant to the research and the construction of categories. The categories developed with this procedure can be seen as an expression of an identified observer perspective. This makes reconstructions of social constructions intersubjectively comprehensible
Anselm Strauss, Adele Clarke and the Feminist Gretchen Question: On the Relationship Between Grounded Theory Methodology and Situational Analysis
Current studies on knowledge construction in qualitative research show that the guiding principles in empirical social research practices differ between Europe and North America; with those in North American being shaped by a specific understanding of pragmatism which emphasizes proximity between research and sociopolitical intervention. Based on this understanding, in this article I scrutinize current North-American debates on generation shifts in grounded theory-based research. Controversies around the role of feminism in science are highlighted, in particular with regard to situational analysis as proposed by Adele CLARKE. I clarify implications for situational analysis as compared to grounded theory methodology, and identify connections for further methodological groundings
