Collective Review: Transdisciplinary and Transformative Research: Living Labs in Practice
Social laboratories for testing policy instruments in the public space have become increasingly popular over the last decade. In the volumes reviewed here, the authors evaluated a series of social laboratories initiated in Baden-Wurttemberg. Both volumes present in detail a variety of transdisciplinary and transformative research methods applicable in social laboratories (and more generally in transdisciplinary and transformative research projects). The authors sought to link methodological questions with broader theoretical concerns. The compilations are of interest for the qualitative research community since they present innovative participatory research methods, the vast majority of which are grounded in the qualitative research paradigm
Successfully Managing the Literature Review and Write-up Process When Using Grounded Theory Methodology—A Dialogue in Exploration
Durch das Dialogformat, das wir abschließend reflektieren, erhoffen wir ein besseres Verständnis der GTM und versuchen, praktische Hilfen zu geben für "the long, rocky walk through the dark forest of the research process using the GT methods" (WU & BEAUNAE 2014, S.249).For researchers unaccustomed to using grounded theory methodology (GTM), it can be daunting. To help address this issue, in this article we present a dialogue between a doctoral candidate who is using GTM and an academic who has experience working with this methodology. Through dialogue, we tackle several important points relating to the methodology, focusing on two key aspects which often create challenges for researchers new to GTM: 1. how and when to engage with existing literature, and 2. what significant implications which using this methodology has for the overall written structure of a grounded theory study, not simply the presentation of the grounded theory itself. This format, which ends with a reflection on the dialogue, aims to facilitate a clearer understanding of the methodology, clarify problematic issues, and offer practical guidance on how to apply it, thereby shedding light on "the long, rocky walk through the dark forest of the research process using the GT methods" (WU & BEAUNAE, 2014, p.249)
Using Mobile Phones: Recording as a Social and Spatial Practice in Multilingualism and Family Research
Family spaces are considered deeply private environments—taking recording devices into the family home is thus usually not an easy task. And it is even harder to make speakers record themselves without the researcher present. In this article, I describe the development of a recording device for mobile phones as a device to be used in multilingualism research. I will look at how qualitative research data are produced through social, technical and spatial practices, and how the availability of certain technical features influences the possibilities of research in the family.I am interested in understanding ways of organizing multilingual family life and as such, my research is situated in the field of family language policy. As part of an ongoing umbrella project on multilingual transcultural families (MultiFam), in my research I deal with families in Oslo who have been selected because they use both German and Norwegian in the family on a regular basis. Interviews, creative tasks and family recordings are among the methods used to collect data on the language ideologies of the parents, the language use in the family and the biographic experiences linked to languages of both parents and (pre-)school-aged children
Harold Garfinkel's "Studies in Ethnomethodology"—An Interview Project
In the following text we introduce the special issue "Harold Garfinkel's 'Studies in Ethnomethodology'—An Interview Project." This special issue assembles eight interviews with scientists from ethnomethodology and adjacent disciplines who speak about the book "Studies in Ethnomethodology" (GARFINKEL 1967) und ethnomethodology in general. Bringing together different perspectives on GARFINKEL's groundbreaking study, the interviews show the multivocality of this controversial and at the same time powerful text. In this introduction we reconstruct the historical context in which the book originally appeared and give a brief outline of its content. Moreover, we introduce the main aim and idea behind the interview project and provide a short preview of the interviews themselves. In the end we identify two themes that can be found across all contributions and which indicate possible ways of reading: 1. the relation between ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, and 2. the understanding of ethnomethodology as a unique attitude of conducting research
Review: Rudolf Schmitt, Julia Schröder & Larissa Pfaller (2018). Systematische Metaphernanalyse. Eine Einführung [Systematic Metaphor Analysis. An Introduction]
With "Systematic Metaphor Analysis: An Introduction," Rudolf SCHMITT, Julia SCHRÖDER and Larissa PFALLER present a didactic reworking of systematic metaphor analysis. The authors first introduce the basic theoretical concepts of the method. Since every step is demonstrated by examples, this is always understandable even for newcomers to qualitative research. SCHMITT et al. then discuss common challenges and solution strategies in the research process, while highlighting the many possible applications of systematic metaphor analysis. The possibilities of presenting results with the aid of larger examples and different contexts for the use of systematic metaphor analysis are described. The authors conclude with a concise summary of the central theses. With its clear structure and its precise and intelligible language, the book more than lives up to the demands on an introduction to systematic metaphor analysis
"We Are a Service, Not an Authority": Multiple Institutional Logics in a Swiss Youth Welfare Office. An Ethnographic Case Study From Street-Level Bureaucracy
In 2013, Switzerland enacted a new law regarding child and adult protection. As a result, the Swiss child welfare system underwent legal, organizational, and structural changes. Due to the new law, the cantons and municipalities had to reorganize their responsibilities in the area of child and adult protection and and set up so-called Child and Adult Protection Agencies. In this process, new professional and organizational roles and self-conceptions emerged which generated ambivalences and contradictions that are partially symptomatic of "street-level bureaucracy" (LIPSKY, 1980). Based on an ethnographic case study, in this article we explore how the youth welfare office we examined deals with requirements emerging from multiple institutional logics. Applying the concept of "institutional logics" (THORNTON & OCASIO, 2008) we draw on considerations from new institutionalism. Ambivalent or even conflicting logics in the youth welfare office examined not only are shown to be entangled but their indistinguishability opens up organizational room for maneuver. These results may be partially generalized to other street-level bureaucracies
Taking the Research Journey Together: The Insider and Outsider Experiences of Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Researchers
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia are among the most researched in the world. Indigenous research methodologies reframe a historical colonial-centric and often exploitative research paradigm, to instead privilege the voices and perspectives of Indigenous peoples within a social justice framework. In this article, we describe the lessons learnt in a research partnership between an Aboriginal and two Anglo-Australian researchers conducting an arts-based action research project in collaboration with five Aboriginal communities in New South Wales, Australia. We identify the importance of reflexivity to shed light on the impact of insider and outsider status in order to design and conduct culturally and ethically informed research with Aboriginal communities. Reflexivity, and a collaborative, adaptive approach to research processes also operates to ensure cultural and professional integrity are embedded into such research projects
"When God Gives You Two Tenths of a Second and the 'Mhm,' Then You Can Change the World." Stephan Wolff in Conversation With René Salomon
In this interview, Stephan WOLFF describes the development of his own theoretical and methodological approach towards ethnomethodology in sociology. Considering it as a promising, yet flexible attitude allowed WOLFF to integrate other theoretical positions and operationalize them in a way that initiated ethnographic studies in various new fields. With this perspective, he played an important role in establishing the ethnomethodological approach in other academic disciplines in Germany. The interview provides a detailed reconstruction of the German reception of ethnomethodology and a genuine insight into the historical situation of theory building and research within the human sciences in (West) Germany since the 1970s. It thereby exposes how cumbersome German sociology's reaction to ethnomethodology was, and it shows to what extent the success of a field of research can depend on the commitment of individuals
Professional Praxis Community in a Dialogical Perspective: Towards the Application of Bakhtinian Categories in the Documentary Method
In studies of professional praxis and learning communities, the dominant focus has been placed on the analysis of cooperative interactions and the establishment of common goals. I propose adopting the broader BAKHTINIAN perspective of dialogue as a category of analysis for sociocultural practices in professional communities, considering the multilevel (polyphonic) references of such practices to individual and collective experiences. In this methodological inquiry, I obtained examples from research conducted with teachers engaged in a school tutoring program aimed at developing new forms of individualized education (Wrocław/Poland, 2008-2016).I discuss the applicability of BAKHTINIAN categories—such as dialogue, the polyphony of voices, and double-voiced discourse—within the documentary method and the methodological adequacy of documentary interpretation for reproducing the epistemological structure of the dialogic object of the study. As a result, I identify three levels of the reconstruction of dialogical meaning in the documentary method: 1. the direct reflection of polyphonic voices, 2. the reflection of reflections of meanings, including meanings reconstructed theoretically by the researchers, and 3. the overlapping of meanings (double voices). This interpretative structure does not reduce the dialogic meaning to situationally limited interactions and reveals the totality of polyphonic understanding within the activity (experience sense)
The Status Quo, Imponderables of Change, and Evaluation: Between Higher Education Policy and Academic Discourse
In this article, we discuss various issues regarding the contemporary reform of science and higher education in Poland, which are constructed and sustained by academics in media discourse. In the performed analyses we refer to the critical and post-Foucauldian studies on the discursive aspects of change in higher education. We propose that the connections between discursive factors, events and social changes be crystallized in the processes of their media problematization. In the space of public discourse and in the forms of the problematization of the reform of higher education, we sought the knowledge, concepts and classification rules that set the discursive framework of the change experienced by the academic community. The research has shown that this framework goes beyond the polarization of positions, that is, beyond the criticism or affirmation of neoliberal reforms. On the basis of the performed analyses we reconstructed three types of internally diversified and non-dichotomic discourses: the status quo discourse, the discourse of the imponderables of change, and the discourse of reform evaluation. Taking Poland as a case study, the article includes a discourse analysis formed at the national level in respect of the key objectives laid down at the European level
